The pack house had finally quieted, but the silence did not bring peace.
It settled instead like a thin layer of glass over something unstable, fragile enough that the smallest disturbance might shatter it completely, and as I stood near the tall windows overlooking Blue Lake, watching the faint ripple of moonlight stretch across the water’s surface, I found myself unable to shake the persistent feeling that something had already cracked beneath us and we simply had not heard it break.
