The hunter’s rifle was leveled at Jay, unwavering, the barrel pointing directly at him like a line drawn in the forest. Her eyes burned with a cold fire, and every inch of her radiated control and defiance.
“Why are you here?” she demanded, her voice sharp, steady. There was no hesitation, no wavering, only accusation and something deeper—anger, resentment, history.
Jay didn’t answer. He didn’t move, didn’t shift, didn’t flinch. He simply met her gaze, calm, deliberate, as if waiting for her to make the first move.
Skye stepped slightly in front of me, his presence solid, protective. I stayed close, careful not to overstep, letting him shield me without drawing attention. His eyes never left the hunter, alert and calculating.
