IRIS POV – CHAPTER 2
Mates.
Something my brother despises.
I’ve been fantasizing about mates since the tender age of 14.
Believing that he could be out there, longing for me the way my heart yearns for him.
My brother, Tyler, never believed in mates. He believes it’s a weakness to love someone so stupidly. Why the Moon Goddess even thought to half one soul.
At the age of 20, I started having these weird dreams. I still remember the very first time I dreamed about it.
*********
A lonely howl echoed in the forest as I made my way silently down the stairs for my midnight walk. Every night said wolf howls. They sound lonely, like they’re longing for someone.
I padded my way through the forest. The wind howls softly, promising a soft night. The forest is silent with only the sound of leaves scrunching under my feet. At the end of the forest, a clearing appears. But it’s not our packs clearing. The most alluring scent of Sea Breeze mixed with Lavender hangs in the air. In the middle of the field stood a 6ft4 guy with his back facing me. His head is tilted to the side while his eyes glows a crimson red.
I cannot see his face fully until he turns around.
“Who are you?” I scream, taking a step forward.
He doesn’t answer. Makes no move.
I take another step forward, but an invisible barrier stops me.
“Who are you? Why are you here?” I try to call out again, but he still gives no answer. He barely moves.
“Find me" A melodic voice appears behind me. I turn to find no one. Who in the moon Goddess was that?
I turn back around to find the guy a few more steps forward. I move to feel the barrier, but it’s gone. After four more steps forward, the barrier appears again.
“Who are you!?” I try to scream louder. Maybe he just can’t hear me. The barrier might be soundproof.
He starts turning around, but before I could see his face, his whole body is swallowed by flames. And he’s gone.
******
For the past 3 years I’ve been having the same dream. Each night, I try to get closer but, the stupid barrier always stops me. The voice that echoes around me started getting louder. Screams of “find me" started haunting me almost every day.
“You’re zoning out again” Tyler’s voice pulls me out of my thoughts.
I hadn’t even heard him enter the office. “I’m not brother” I replied nonchalantly. Rising to my feet, ready to exit the office.
“Where are you going?” He asks, taking a seat in his office chair.
“Going to take a stroll in the forest. Do you need to ask where I’m going every time I move a muscle?” I sneered, clearly agitated with his question.
He sighs and runs a hand through his chocolate locks “You know I’ve always been protective of you, Iris. You can’t just go wandering around. What if a rogue attacks you at the edge of the border?”
“I can hold my own. I don’t need your protection. I’m not a little girl anymore!” I chastise. What will it take him to realize that I really can take care of myself?
He stood to his feet, allowing the chair to scrape against the marble floors “Take a guard with you and don’t wander far!” He demands.
“No” I scoff, holding back an eye roll.
“Iris!” A growl vibrates in his chest.
“You never let me do anything for myself! I can’t even go to the kitchen alone! There should always be a guard with me as if I’m some delicate flower that will be picked and stumped on!” I growled. Not missing the flinch that covered his face. “Whatever! I suddenly don’t have the urge to walk anymore. " With that, I turn on my heals and proceeded to my room.
Slamming my door shut, I felt as if my veins were on fire.
“AHHH!” A loud scream escapes my lips. I could feel the warmth rushing through my veins. My anger starts to get the best of me, and I start trashing things in my room. He makes me so frustrated! I can never do anything for myself.
“Find me," I jump as that melodic voice appears again out of nowhere.
“Who are you? Show yourself!” I demand, getting tired of this back and forth.
“Find me" the voice continues, traveling around the room.
My veins are still aching with warm blood. Promising no sooth until I’m calmed down.
I can’t calm down. First the weird dreams, then my brother and now this voice that never wants to appear.
“I give up." I murmured breathlessly, falling face first onto my bed.
“Look closer." My head snaps up as the voice becomes louder. I make my way to the mirror and gasp at the image in front of me.
There, in the mirror, I could see my eyes flashing a crimson red before it goes back to its usual crystal blue.
“What the hell!?” I stare at my reflection. What just happened?
Who is this voice, and why is my eyes flashing red?
I need answers, and I need them now.
