"This is Aiden, he will be your new bodyguard since Jenkins is no longer your nanny." My dad said. I gulped a lump down my throat and just the thought of having a bodyguard scared me. Not even a bodyguard in general but the thought of having someone around me is what made me afraid.
The last thing I wanted to do is get my heart broken the second time in a row. The so called Aiden stood and stretched his hand out for a handshake. "Hi, I am Aiden." He said with a poker face. I ignored his handshake and slapped his hand away from my direction.
Everyone looked taken aback by my sudden action, Aiden on the other hand was not fazed at all. He just gulped a lump down his throat and pushed his hands back into his pockets.
"Janet!" My father scolded me with a frown on his face. I shook my head in disagreement. All of this was overwhelming for me right. It was too soon to move forward by having another person by my side. "I am sorry" I said as I felt tears prick from the corner of my eyes.
I hastily excused myself, I went into my room and I cried my eyes out that night. The next morning I was surprised to see Aiden standing outside of my door. Was my father being serious? I had clearly refused to have Aiden as a bodyguard yet my father had turned a deaf ear.
That was how it all began, several times I tried to convince my father that I did not need a bodyguard but my father was too overprotective, he treated me like I was a child and he often made decisions for me. That was how Aiden became my bodyguard. I never really went anywhere so he was stuck outside of my room but whenever I went out for the pettiest errands like grocery shopping, Aiden would always follow me and frankly speaking it was annoying.
I had even gone as far as trying to persuade him to quitting his job but Aiden was dead serious on being my bodyguard, I felt suspicious about it. He could not provide a tangible reason why he wanted to be my bodyguard. Whenever I asked, Aiden would tell me that he was only following orders.
One particular night, I was too overwhelmed with my emotions. I felt like I would go crazy if I spent another night at the house, I decided to go to the club for a drink in order to clear my head. It would be my second time at the club, the first time was when Damien said he wanted me to experience what it felt like being in the club.
A drop of tear rolled down my cheeks as I and Aiden stepped into the vibrant arena. The loud music blaring from the DJ stand echoed loudly. I felt a little uncomfortable by the strong smell of booze, cigarettes mixed with sweat from the adults swaying their bodies effortlessly to the music.
It seemed like Aiden noticed my discomfort because of how he placed his hands over my shoulder and led me gently to the bar. I ordered for a bottle of tequila and I began to gulp the liquid down my throat. The harsh taste of the liquid made me grit my teeth, I suddenly felt alive and awake.
"Take it easy." I heard Aiden whisper softly into my ears. The hairs on my skin rose at the hoarseness of his voice. I immediately shuddered the thought off and mentally scolded myself. He was just my bodguard, nothing more.
"You know, after I regained my sight, I thought life would become a lot more easier for me but seeing Damien lying naked on the bed with Mrs Jenkins that day made me feel sad, it made me wish I was blind, maybe If I had just remained blind then I would be clueless about Damien and Mrs Jenkins' affair." I paused to gulp down the liquid again.
I heard Aiden sigh heavily. "Trust me, even if you played blind. Your husband was going to dump you sooner or later." Aiden said. "You can postpone the pain but you can never erase it." He said.
Aiden's words held truth in them, he was right. Even if I tried to postpone the pain. Damien never loved me and once he had gotten possession of my property, he was going to dump me either ways. I was destined to suffer, my fate had already been fixed and there was nothing I could do to stop it.
"His loss though. Trust me, Karma is real and as cringe as this might sound, I am sure the consequences of his actions are going to come back to bite him in the ass. Sooner or later, he will regret doing this to you." Aiden said. I paused to gaze at him and I could see sincerity twinkling in his eyes.
Was Karma real or was Aiden just looking for a means to calm me down?
"You know being my bodyguard does not mean you have to comfort me. Your job is to protect me not lie to me." I said in a bored tone.
Aiden smiled, for the first time since he had started working with me. I saw a smile lighten his face up. "I am not trying to comfort you. I guess I just thought you needed to know the truth. Your husband will get what is coming for him soon." He said so confidently. How was he so sure?
His confidence sparked up a confidence in me and I felt anger course through my veins. Aiden was right, Damien needed to pay for what he did to me. Although at this point, I realized that I was not going to wait for Karma to catch up with Damien, I was going to be Karma instead.
I turned to Aiden with a smirk on my face and a newfound confidence in me. "Marry me." I blurted out.
Aiden looked confused but little did he know that he was the beginning and the end of my new revenge plan.
