The Blood Moon Secret

697 Words
Aria couldn’t breathe. The prophecy. The Moon Queen. The Lycan King. None of it made sense. She had spent her entire life being treated as ordinary. Sometimes even less than ordinary. An omega. A nobody. A disappointment. Yet now everyone in the hall was staring at her as though she were someone else entirely. Someone important. “You’re lying,” Damon said suddenly. The elder looked at him sadly. “I wish I were.” Damon shook his head. “No. If this prophecy was real, why was it hidden?” A heavy silence followed. The elder’s face darkened. “Because people were willing to kill for it.” The crowd gasped. Aria felt her stomach drop. The old woman continued. “Twenty years ago, the royal bloodline of the Moon Queen was hunted.” Fear flickered across several elders’ faces. “The royal family was slaughtered.” Aria’s chest tightened. “Everyone believed the bloodline had disappeared forever.” The elder looked directly at her. “But one child survived.” Aria froze. No. No, that wasn’t possible. Her voice trembled. “You mean… me?” The elder nodded. “Yes.” The world tilted beneath her feet. Aria remembered countless nights listening to cruel whispers. Poor Aria. Weak Aria. The unwanted girl. Yet all along, the pack had hidden the truth about her identity. Anger slowly replaced her shock. “You knew?” she asked. The elder lowered her eyes. “We were trying to protect you.” “Protect me?” Tears filled Aria’s eyes. “My entire life I was treated like I was worthless!” No one answered. Because no one could. Kael watched her quietly. For the first time, his expression softened with something that looked dangerously close to regret. As though he understood her pain. Then another voice cut through the room. “This changes nothing.” Everyone turned toward Damon. The Alpha’s face was hard. Cold. Defensive. He looked directly at Kael. “I still rejected her.” The words hit Aria like a slap. Pain flashed through her chest again. Even after learning the truth, Damon didn’t regret it. Or perhaps he refused to admit he did. Kael’s eyes narrowed. “Good.” The single word stunned everyone. Damon frowned. “What?” A dangerous smile appeared on the king’s face. “I said good.” The room grew tense. Kael stepped closer. “If you had accepted her…” His voice dropped. “…I never would have found her.” A strange silence followed. Then Aria noticed something. For the first time all night… Damon looked jealous. Not angry. Jealous. His gaze lingered on the hand Kael still held. On the way the king stood beside her. Protecting her. Claiming her. The realization seemed to hit Damon all at once. The woman he had rejected. The woman he had humiliated. The woman he had thrown away. The Lycan King considered her priceless. And for the first time— Damon looked uncertain. Selena noticed it too. Her face instantly darkened. She stepped forward and grabbed Damon’s arm. “You can’t seriously be regretting this.” “I’m not.” But his answer came too quickly. Too sharply. Kael smirked. He had noticed. Everyone had. Damon was beginning to realize his mistake. Suddenly, a guard burst through the doors. His face was pale. Terrified. “Your Majesty!” Kael turned. “What is it?” The guard dropped to one knee. “We have a problem.” The king’s expression hardened immediately. “What happened?” The guard swallowed. Then delivered the news. “The Northern Rogues have crossed the border.” Gasps erupted throughout the hall. Several elders turned white. Aria frowned. She had heard stories about the Northern Rogues. Merciless killers. Entire villages had disappeared because of them. But the next words frightened everyone even more. “They’re searching for someone.” Kael’s face became unreadable. The guard looked toward Aria. And then said— “They’re searching for the Blood Moon Princess.” The hall fell into stunned silence. Every eye turned toward Aria. Someone had discovered the truth. And now they were coming for her.
