Ehi knew she had said too much.
“I don’t like when people look at me.”
The words echoed in her head.
Why did she say that?
She never said things like that.
Not out loud.
Not to anyone.
Especially not to him.
Daniel didn’t move.
Didn’t laugh.
Didn’t question it.
“I know,” he said again.
That made it worse.
Because now—
She felt understood.
And she didn’t know what to do with that.
Ehi stood up suddenly.
“I should go.”
Too fast.
Too abrupt.
Daniel frowned slightly.
“You just got here.”
“I have things to do.”
That wasn’t true.
But she needed space.
From him.
From this feeling.
From herself.
She started packing her things.
Quick movements.
Avoiding his eyes.
“Did I say something wrong?” Daniel asked.
Ehi paused.
No.
That was the problem.
“You didn’t,” she said.
Then why did it feel like everything was changing?
“I just… prefer being alone.”
That one was true.
Or at least—
it used to be.
Daniel nodded slowly.
“Okay.”
He didn’t argue.
Didn’t try to stop her.
That surprised her.
For a second—
She almost wished he would.
Ehi turned and walked away.
Step after step.
Faster than necessary.
By the time she reached the door—
Her chest felt tight again.
She didn’t look back.
She couldn’t.
Because if she did—
She might stay.
And staying…
felt dangerous.
Behind her—
Daniel didn’t move.
He watched the empty space where she had been.
Something about that conversation stayed with him.
The way she said it.
The way she left.
Like being seen—
Was something she was trying to escape.
And for the first time—
Daniel realized something.
Ehi wasn’t just quiet.
She was hiding.
And now—
He wanted to know why.
