Malik’s POV The moment we returned we got Eve to the infirmary, I refused to leave her side. They lay her on one of the wooden beds, the lantern light reflecting over her face. Her lips parted slightly, breath shallow yet steady, but my heart still hammered like she was slipping away with each second that went by. I pulled a chair close to her, sitting with my elbows to my knees, staring at her like if I watched long enough I would understand how to fight what was trying to take her away from me But she shouldn’t have to fight like this, not for a place that tore her apart, not for a pack that turned its back on her, my jaw clenched until it hurt.
