Devon pov Fuming he continued to to take his anger out on a nail as he hammered in a new board on one of the horse corrals, the old one had rotted out and he was replacing all the bad. “Hey boss” an older bowlegged grey haired cowboy with a mustache asked hesitantly. “What” I replied a little to gruffly. “Well boss just thought you should know John and I where out checking the fences in the north pasture and we saw a truck and trailer parked on the turn around, we checked there is no one around and the plates are from Idaho”. “Probably just someone out for a trail ride but thanks Tom I’ll saddle up and go let them know this is private property, I’m going to pack my saddle bags for overnight just in case it takes awhile to track them down” I replied “ can you and John hold the fort while I’m out”? “Yes sir we will finish the corral and feed this evening tomorrow we will go out and check the herd in the west pasture” Tom reassured. Twenty minutes later I was loping slowly towards where Tom had seen the truck. I circled it trying to pick up a trail then I found it on the narrow trail towards the cabin. Bringing Champ my palomino to a trot we fallowed all the way to the meadow. When I saw the cabin I was shocked pulling Champ to a stop I looked on. There was dust billowing out of the cabin door, and then out walks the most gorgeous woman he had ever seen. She had long golden brown hair it cascaded in waves and a figure that said she worked out. He kicked Champ to a lope stopping at the cabin “ just who the hell do you think you are this is private property” she jumped and he could see color drain from her face. “I I um I” she stammered. “ Cat got your tongue” I interrupt “why are you squatting on my land?” Her face turned red at that and he realized how deep blue her eyes where “your an asshole” she spat at me. I chuckled “ well sweetheart that doesn’t change the fact your on my land” “ it’s mine too” she said quietly. Then it dawned on me that this was the woman I had spent hating. She looked sweet not mean and golddiggerish like I had pictured her. “Why” I said “why did he give it to you”? “I don’t know I guess he was protecting me one last time in his own way” she stated sadly. “What was so damn important that you missed his funeral”? She looked away before glancing up and saying “does it really matter”? Then she walked away and continued with her cleaning. He glanced around noticing she must have washed the bedding in the creek the where hanging on the porch rail drying. He could see inside and it already looked cleaner than he had ever seen it. He wondered why this woman would want to be out here all alone. It’s something Wyatt use to do on leave voicing his thought he said “ you where there weren’t you”?
