CHAPTER TEN- The silence between them

1227 Words
The morning came with a sharp brightness that didn’t match how either of them felt. The sky was clear, the sun strong, casting golden light across the campus as students moved with their usual energy. Laughter echoed, footsteps rushed, conversations overlapped. Everything felt normal. Except for them. Sophia stood in front of her wardrobe longer than usual. Not because she didn’t know what to wear— But because she didn’t know how she wanted to feel. After a few seconds, she pulled out a soft grey off-shoulder sweater, letting it fall loosely over one side, exposing just a hint of her collarbone. She paired it with fitted dark blue jeans and simple white sneakers. Her hair was left down today, falling naturally over her shoulders, slightly wavy at the ends. She didn’t put in much effort—but somehow, that made her look even more effortless. But her face… Her eyes carried something quieter now. Guarded. She picked up her bag and paused briefly at the mirror. Then turned away. “Okay,” Maya said as soon as Sophia stepped out. “You look good… but also like you’re about to ignore someone on purpose.” Sophia gave a small shrug. “Maybe I am.” Maya raised an eyebrow. “So we’re at that stage now?” Sophia didn’t answer. Because yes— They were. When Sophia entered Room 214, she didn’t look at him immediately. That was new. Usually, her eyes found him without thinking. But today— She chose not to. She walked to her seat and sat down calmly, pulling out her notebook. Maya leaned in slightly. “This is interesting.” Sophia kept her gaze forward. “I’m just focusing on class.” “Of course you are,” Maya said, clearly unconvinced. At the front of the room, Daniel noticed immediately. He noticed everything. The way she walked in without looking at him. The way she sat down without hesitation. The way she didn’t search for him like she usually did. It shouldn’t have mattered. But it did. He adjusted the cuff of his sleeve. Today, he wore a fitted black shirt, sleeves rolled halfway up his forearms again, paired with dark trousers. His appearance was sharp, controlled—but there was tension in the way he held himself. Subtle. But there. “Good morning,” he said. “Good morning,” the class responded. The lecture began. Sophia focused on her notes. Really focused. She wrote everything down. Listened carefully. Didn’t look up unless she had to. Didn’t engage more than necessary. Didn’t raise her hand. Didn’t speak. And that… Was the problem. Because Daniel noticed that too. Every second of it. At one point, he paused mid-explanation. His eyes moved across the room. Then— “Sophia.” Her name again. But this time, it felt different. She looked up slowly. “Yes?” “What’s your interpretation of this passage?” Her expression didn’t change much. “It shows internal conflict,” she said simply. Short. Direct. Nothing more. Daniel waited. As if expecting her to continue. She didn’t. “…go on,” he said. Sophia held his gaze. “The character knows what they want,” she said. “But chooses not to act on it.” The words were deliberate. Careful. But loaded. The room felt it. Daniel felt it. “Why?” he asked. Sophia didn’t look away. “Because they think it’s the right thing to do.” Silence. Then she looked back down at her notebook. Conversation over. And somehow— That hit harder than anything she could have said. The rest of the lecture felt stretched. Uncomfortable in a quiet, controlled way. Daniel continued teaching. Sophia continued writing. But something unspoken moved between them the entire time. A tension that didn’t disappear. Didn’t settle. Just… stayed. When the class ended, Sophia didn’t wait. She packed her bag quickly and stood up. Maya blinked. “Wait—you’re not staying?” Sophia shook her head. “No.” That alone said everything. She walked toward the door without looking back. But— “Stay.” The word came from behind her. Low. Controlled. But clear. Sophia stopped. Just for a second. Then turned slowly. Daniel stood at the front of the room. Watching her. The room was almost empty now. Maya looked between them. Then quietly slipped out. Leaving them alone. Sophia walked back slowly. Not too close. Not too far. “What?” she asked. Her tone wasn’t soft anymore. It wasn’t warm. It was… careful. Daniel took a step forward. Then stopped. As if measuring the distance. “You’re avoiding me,” he said. Sophia let out a small breath. “Funny.” “What does that mean?” “It means you don’t get to say that,” she replied. Daniel’s jaw tightened slightly. “I’m trying to do the right thing.” Sophia nodded slowly. “I know.” “Then why are you acting like this?” Her expression shifted slightly. “Because you made it clear that none of this matters,” she said. “That’s not what I said.” “It’s what you meant.” Silence. Daniel ran a hand through his hair briefly. Frustration—real frustration—slipped through. “That’s not true,” he said. Sophia crossed her arms. “Then what is true?” He didn’t answer immediately. And that hesitation… Said everything again. Sophia laughed softly. But there was no humor in it. “Exactly.” She turned slightly. “Look, I get it,” she said. “You want to act like this never happened. Fine.” “That’s not—” “But don’t expect me to just stand here and pretend too,” she cut in. Daniel stepped forward instinctively. “Sophia—” She froze. Because this time— He was closer. Too close. The space between them suddenly felt smaller. He noticed it too. And for a second— Neither of them moved. Neither of them spoke. Just looked at each other. And everything they were trying to ignore— Was right there. Unavoidable. Real. Dangerous. Daniel’s voice dropped. “Do you think this is easy for me?” Sophia’s breath caught slightly. “Then why are you making it harder?” “I’m not,” he said. “I’m trying to stop it before it becomes something worse.” Sophia looked at him. Really looked. “Too late,” she said quietly. The words hit. Hard. Daniel exhaled slowly. Because he knew— She wasn’t wrong. Neither of them spoke for a few seconds. Then Sophia stepped back. Creating distance again. “I should go,” she said. This time, he didn’t stop her. Didn’t try. Didn’t move. He just watched her walk away. Again. Outside, the sunlight felt too bright. Too normal. Sophia walked without thinking. Her chest felt tight. Because now— Everything was clear. There was no confusion anymore. No guessing. No wondering. They both felt it. And that was exactly why it was dangerous. Back in the empty classroom, Daniel stood still. His hands clenched slightly at his sides. Because he had tried. Tried to control it. Tried to stop it. But the truth was— It wasn’t stopping. And the more he pushed it away… The stronger it became.
