Episode 3: Shadows Between Pages

277 Words
The bookstore was quiet except for the soft rustle of pages. Elena lingered near the corner shelf, her fingers tracing the spines of old novels. She felt strangely at ease here, as if the silence wrapped around her like a familiar blanket. Adrian worked behind the counter, his eyes occasionally lifting to watch her, though he quickly looked away whenever she noticed. Trying to break the silence, Elena picked up a book and walked to the counter. “Do you recommend this one?” she asked, her smile hopeful. Adrian glanced at the cover, a classic romance novel. “It’s… gentle,” he replied after a pause. “Happy ending. But not everything in life is as neat as in books.” His words, simple as they were, felt heavier than she expected. Elena tilted her head, studying him. “You speak as if you don’t believe in happy endings.” Adrian’s jaw tightened. He opened his mouth to reply, then stopped, shaking his head slightly. “Some stories don’t deserve to be reopened,” he said quietly, turning his attention back to the register. The answer left Elena unsettled. She wanted to ask more, but she sensed a wall she wasn’t ready to climb. Instead, she nodded, clutching the book to her chest. As she stepped outside, the crisp September wind brushed her cheeks. She couldn’t deny it—Adrian was hiding something. Something that weighed on him heavily enough to bleed through even the smallest conversations. And though she barely knew him, Elena felt the stirrings of curiosity—and fear. Because part of her already wanted to be the one to uncover his story.
