Episode 5: Fractures

265 Words
The days that followed were different. When Elena walked into the bookstore, Adrian greeted her with polite nods but nothing more. The warmth she thought she had glimpsed in him was gone, replaced by a quiet distance that built walls between them. Elena told herself it didn’t matter—she had her writing, her own reasons for being here. But every time she saw him shelving books, every time she caught the shadow in his eyes, her chest tightened with unspoken questions. One afternoon, as she sat on a bench outside the bookstore, sketching words in her notebook, a voice startled her. “New in town, aren’t you?” She looked up to see a tall, friendly man carrying a paper bag from the bakery. He had an easy smile and eyes that sparkled with curiosity. “I’m Daniel. I run the café down the street.” Elena returned the smile, relieved by the friendliness. “Elena. I’m… staying here for a while.” “Well, Rosewood isn’t always kind to strangers,” Daniel said with a light laugh, “but I hope you find something worth staying for.” His gaze lingered a moment longer than casual, enough to make Elena’s cheeks warm. Through the bookstore window, Adrian watched. His jaw tightened as Daniel leaned closer, gesturing animatedly while Elena laughed softly. For reasons he refused to admit, the sight unsettled him. Yet instead of stepping out, he turned away, burying himself in the comfort of routine tasks, telling himself it was none of his concern. But deep down, he knew it already was.
