Episode 7: Lines Crossed

313 Words
The café was lively that afternoon, filled with the hum of conversation and the clinking of cups. Elena sat by the window, notebook open, when Daniel appeared with a steaming mug. “On the house,” he said with a grin, sliding the cup toward her. “Writers need fuel, after all.” Elena chuckled softly. “Thank you, but I don’t want to take advantage—” “You’re not,” Daniel interrupted warmly, leaning a little closer. “Besides, I enjoy your company. Most people in this town talk about the weather and gossip. You… you’re different.” The sincerity in his eyes made Elena’s cheeks warm. Before she could reply, the café door opened—and Adrian stepped in. His gaze swept the room until it landed on her, then on Daniel, still leaning too close. A flicker of something sharp crossed Adrian’s face. He strode to the counter, ordered his coffee, and waited, his posture rigid. Elena felt her pulse quicken. She closed her notebook and approached him. “Adrian,” she began carefully, “why do you keep acting like this?” He turned to her, eyes dark. “Like what?” “Like it bothers you when I talk to Daniel. Like you have the right to decide who I spend time with.” Her voice trembled, but her gaze didn’t waver. For a long moment, Adrian said nothing. Then, in a voice low enough only she could hear, he admitted, “Because it does bother me. More than it should.” Elena’s breath caught. She had wanted honesty—but hearing it out loud sent her heart into chaos. Daniel’s voice called her name from across the room, breaking the moment. Adrian’s jaw tightened. He picked up his coffee and walked out without another word, leaving Elena torn between two truths she could no longer ignore.
