Episode 12: Collision

The air inside the bookstore thickened as the door shut behind Daniel. His easy smile was gone, replaced by a guarded look as his eyes shifted between Adrian and Elena. “I didn’t realize,” Daniel began slowly, “that you two were… close.” Elena’s lips parted, but no words came. Adrian rose from his stool, his shoulders squared, his voice calm but edged with steel. “She doesn’t owe anyone an explanation.” Daniel’s jaw tightened. “I’m not asking for one. I just thought she deserved better than half-answers and shadows.” His gaze locked on Adrian, unflinching. “You’ve been keeping her in the dark, haven’t you?” Adrian’s eyes darkened. “You don’t know what you’re talking about.” Elena stepped between them, her heart pounding. “Stop it—both of you. This isn’t fair.” Her voice shook, the pressure of their stares burning into her. “I came to Rosewood for peace, not to be pulled apart like this.” For a long moment, silence reigned. Daniel’s expression softened as he turned to her. “Elena, all I want is for you to be happy. Safe. You don’t need to carry someone else’s storms.” Adrian’s voice was lower, rougher. “And what if she doesn’t want safety? What if she wants something real, even if it’s messy?” Elena’s chest tightened. Their words cut through her like two halves of a truth she couldn’t reconcile. Without thinking, she backed away, her breath shallow. “I can’t do this right now,” she whispered, clutching her notebook to her chest before rushing out into the night. Behind her, the bookstore fell silent again—two men, one storm, and a choice she was not yet ready to make.
