Chapter 1 ~ s. 7

I stared directly into Leo’s eyes. For the first time, I didn’t feel nervous standing in front of him. I wasn’t the quiet girl who always tried to keep everyone happy. I wasn’t the wolfless daughter who needed to be protected. Something inside me had changed. Stormy was awake. And she was furious. “You were having s*x with her here in the garden.” My voice was loud and steady, filling the bedroom. “Her underwear was hanging from her leg. I saw you with her. I saw what you were doing, and I heard everything.” Leo’s face turned pale. “You were with another woman on my mother’s birthday.” I took another step toward him. “And when she told you she was your fated mate, you hit her!” My voice rose until it almost became a scream. “YOU CHEATED ON ME IN MY OWN GARDEN, ON MY MOTHER’S FIFTIETH BIRTHDAY!” The room went completely silent. Even my mate behind me seemed surprised by the force in my voice. Leo had never heard me speak to him like this. Not once. His shoulders dropped, and all the anger disappeared from his face. “Bella…” His voice was weak. “I’m sorry. I love you. You weren’t supposed to see that.” I stared at him in disbelief. “That’s your excuse?” Before Leo could answer, my father moved. He crossed the bedroom in seconds and grabbed Leo by the jaw, lifting him partly off the floor. “YOU CHEATED ON MY DAUGHTER?!” My father’s voice shook the room. His wolf was right beneath the surface. The air suddenly felt heavy with alpha power. Leo grabbed my father’s wrist, but he couldn’t get free. “We accepted you because Bella didn’t want another man,” Dad growled. “We gave you a chance because she begged us to. We even accepted you after seeing how weak your wolf was.” Leo’s face turned even whiter. I could see fear in his eyes now. “Dad.” I stepped forward. “Don’t use your strength to fight him.” My father looked at me. “You said it yourself. He was too weak to be my fated mate.” My father’s jaw tightened. His wolf clearly wanted to take over. He was an alpha, and an alpha didn’t back down easily. But I knew my father. He had always protected me. And right now, that protective instinct was fighting against his better judgment. “Peter!” My mother’s voice suddenly cut through the room. Everyone froze. Even my father. Her voice carried the authority of an Luna, and every wolf in the room went silent. Dad slowly released Leo. Leo stumbled backward, coughing as he touched his throat. My mother walked toward us. Her eyes moved from me to Leo. Then they stopped on the enormous man standing behind me. She studied him carefully. Her expression changed. Shock. Recognition. And then something that looked almost like excitement. “Bella…” She spoke softly this time. “Is he your fated mate?” I turned toward the man behind me. He was still standing protectively close, his enormous body almost completely shielding me from Leo. His ocean-blue eyes met mine. The moment our eyes connected, that strange warmth returned to my chest. I nodded. “Yes, Mom.” My voice was quieter now, but there was no hesitation. “He’s my mate.” I glanced down at my hands. Hands that had once been completely ordinary. Hands that belonged to a wolfless girl. Now I could feel Stormy moving beneath my skin. “She woke up because of him.” My mother’s eyes widened. “Your wolf?” “Yes.” I looked at her. “His mate bond woke Stormy.” My father stared at me. Then his gaze moved slowly toward the man standing behind me. For several seconds, nobody spoke. Then Dad looked at me in shock. He looked right through me and saw the pure-white wolf who had just revealed herself. His expression softened. “Pure white…” He whispered the words as if he still couldn’t believe what he was seeing. My grandfather had been right. The wolf everyone had thought I would never have was finally awake. And she had awakened because I had found my true mate. I looked over my shoulder at him. I still didn’t know his name. I didn’t know where he came from. I didn’t know why the strongest wolf in the country had suddenly become my protector. But one thing was certain. He had found me. And he wasn’t letting me go.
