Chapter 1 ~ s. 8

“I, Bella, am breaking the bond between myself and my chosen mate.” The words leave my mouth quietly, but they seem to echo through the room. For a moment, nobody moves. I can feel the tension settle over everyone like a heavy blanket. The air feels different now, charged with something ancient and powerful. Even Leo goes completely still. He stares at me as if he can’t believe what I’ve just said. “Bella, please.” The sound of his voice—desperate, pleading—makes something inside me twist. For months, I had begged him for his attention. I had waited for him to come home. I had made excuses for his absence, his coldness, and all the nights he claimed he was too tired. And now he was begging me not to leave. Too late. I shake my head. “No.” His face falls. “I will not stay with a man who cheats behind my back,” I say, my voice stronger now. “And I will never stay with someone who puts his hands on a woman in anger.” Leo takes a step toward me. “Bella—” “Enough.” A low growl rolls through the room. Stormy. I feel her push forward inside me, her presence suddenly overwhelming. Her anger isn’t mine, but I can feel it as clearly as my own heartbeat. Stormy is a strong wolf, and she can cense her mate behind her. His wolf is strong and matches her energy “Dad, make someone remove him.” I blink. I have never said anything like that. Before I can even process what Stormy has said, my fated mate steps forward. “No. I’ll gladly do it.” He grabs Leo with shocking ease, throws him over one enormous shoulder. “Hey! Put me down!” Leo’s protests echo through the hallway as the muscle of a mountain carries him toward the staircase. My mother immediately follows. I remain frozen for a moment, staring after them. Then I hear my father’s voice from the stairwell. “ do you want me to throw him three floors?” “He’ll survive,” my father answers calmly. A second later, Leo is sent tumbling down the staircase. I wince. “Dad!” My mother looks back at me from the top of the stairs. “Bella…” “I didn’t ask him to do that.” She gives me a knowing look. “I know.” Then she disappears down the stairs after my father, i have never seen my father run in that speed before, he runs down after Leo, he won’t let him go that easy. I stand alone in my bedroom, my heart still pounding. I don’t know whether I’m shocked, relieved, or simply exhausted. Probably all three. A few minutes later, I hear footsteps coming back up the stairs. My father appears first, followed by my mother. Leo is nowhere in sight. My father looks completely unfazed. “He’ll be fine,” he says before I can ask. Then he and Mom walk down again. I take a breath. And then I hear another set of footsteps. Slow. Heavy. My fated mate. I could feel stormy jump and scream for her mate. He comes back into the bedroom and closes the door behind him. The soft click of the lock makes me suddenly aware of how quiet the room has become. I turn around. And forget how to breathe for a second. He looks even more handsome than before. His body is pumping adrenaline and makes every bit of detail look ten times better gooood he is so f*****g hot. He’s still shirtless, wearing only the dark suit trousers he’d apparently been wearing since yesterday. His hair is slightly messy, his jaw covered with a hint of stubble, and faint traces of Leo fighting against him across his skin. Without the suit jacket and shirt, I can see exactly how powerful he is. Broad shoulders. A strong chest. Muscular arms. The kind of body that makes it painfully obvious that throwing a grown man over his shoulder had required almost no effort at all. I quickly look away. Unfortunately, not quickly enough. “You’re staring again.” “I am not.” A faint smile appears on his lips. “You are.” “I was just thinking.” “About me?” My cheeks heat. “No everything isn’t about you, you know that?.” He takes one slow step toward me. “You’re a terrible liar.” I swallow. “I was wondering if you’re always this… intense.” “Only when someone gives me a reason.” “And Leo gave you a reason?” The smile disappears from his face. “He hurt my beautiful mate.” His voice is quieter now. “That was enough.” My heart gives an unexpected flutter. He stops a few feet away from me, leaving plenty of space between us. “I won’t hurt you, Bella.” “I know.” His eyes search mine. “Do you? You saw him hurt his mate, I will never hurt you” I nod slowly. For the first time tonight, I realize something. Leo’s presence had always made me feel like I wasn’t enough. But standing here with my fated mate, I feel something completely different. Safe. Protected. Wanted. And somehow, that frightens me more than anything. Because the bond between us is still there. Quiet. Powerful. Waiting. I can feel it beneath my skin, pulling me toward him with every heartbeat. I don’t know what will happen if I stop fighting it. But judging by the way he’s looking at me, I think he is wondering the same thing.
