Chapter 1 ~ s. 4

The bedroom door swung open after he pushed it gently. For him, it had probably been nothing more than a small push, but the door nearly came off its hinges. He stared at it for a second, looking genuinely shocked. “Oh, s**t. Sorry. I’ll take a look at that door before I go.” I couldn’t control myself. A laugh burst out of me before I even realized I was laughing. “I don’t even know your name, and you’ve already destroyed my bedroom door.” Another wave of pain from my wolf shook my entire body, making me almost jump out of his arms. He immediately carried me toward the bed. “It’s your first transformation,” he said, his voice low and reassuring. “It hurts like hell. It can feel like it’s killing you, but I’ll be here. I’ll hold you and take as much of your pain as I can.” He slowly lowered me onto the mattress. “Can you really do that? Take some of my pain?” “Fated mates can take away each other’s pain. I’m your mate.” “But it will hurt you. Why would you do that?” I genuinely couldn’t understand why he would willingly take my pain. “I’m one hundred and ten kilos of muscle, and you’re around seventy. I can handle more pain than you can. And a pure-white wolf will probably make your first transformation even more intense.” Without hesitation, he removed his jacket and shirt. I forgot how to breathe. His body was the most beautiful thing I had ever seen. Broad shoulders, powerful arms, a strong chest, and muscles that seemed to move beneath his skin with every breath. A strange hunger took control of me. Before I knew what I was doing, I climbed out of bed and walked toward him. I stopped directly in front of him. My eyes travelled shamelessly over his body. He noticed. Of course he noticed. His ocean-blue eyes locked onto mine. “Bella.” The way he said my name sent a shiver through me. “What?” “You’re staring.” “I know.” His eyebrows lifted. For some reason, that only made me bolder. “I can’t help it.” His expression changed. His eyes darkened. The air between us suddenly felt thick enough to touch. The mate bond was burning through me, making every inch of my skin feel hypersensitive. “I need you,” I whispered. His jaw tightened. “You have no idea what you’re doing to me.” “Then maybe you should show me.” His eyes widened slightly, as though he hadn’t expected those words from me. “The mate bond makes you feel things very intensely,” he said, his voice rougher now. “It’s normal.” I stepped even closer. “If you’re really my mate, shouldn’t you be able to handle me?” A dangerous smile appeared on his face. “Careful, Bella.” “Why?” “Because I’m already having a hard enough time controlling myself.” His hand settled around my waist. The moment he touched me, lightning raced through my body. My wolf practically purred. I looked up at him. “I don’t want you to stop.” His breathing became heavier. He lowered his forehead against mine. “Tell me if you want me to.” “I will.” His thumb slowly brushed across my cheek. Then another wave of pain tore through me. I gasped, and he immediately pulled me against his chest. “I’ve got you.” His arms tightened around me, and the pain began to ease. I buried my face against his chest, listening to his rapidly beating heart. “Why does being close to you make everything feel better?” “Because we’re mates.” The word sent another shiver through me. I lifted my head. His gaze dropped to my lips. For several seconds, neither of us moved. Then he whispered, “You’re going to drive me insane.” A small smile tugged at my lips. “Maybe I already have.” His arms tightened around my waist. And in that moment, I knew one thing for certain. Leo had never made me feel like this. Not even close. This man was a stranger. A dangerous, arrogant stranger. But he was my mate. And every instinct inside me was screaming the same thing. I belong in his arms
