Chapter 1 ~ s. 3

A strong feeling hit me like a train wreck—a feeling I had never experienced before. “And you’re hitting me because…?” His tone was sharp and annoyed. “I wouldn’t have walked into you if you had just stayed away from places you shouldn’t be. The party is inside.” My voice was a little louder than I expected. I normally never snapped at people. The big man in the black suit turned around. His handsome face looked me up and down. “Looks like your day was ruined before you walked into me.” His eyes were ocean blue and beautiful. He had dark-brown hair and a jawline sharper than my kitchen knife. A tear rolled down my cheek. His big hand moved up and gently wiped it away. The second he touched me, lightning shot through us both. “Mate.” His voice was dark, the word escaping him before he seemed to realize he had said it. His big hands locked around my waist and pulled me closer. “What did you say?” My voice sounded louder than I intended. Leo and that woman had probably heard me from somewhere in the garden. His lips crashed against mine. I froze for a second, overwhelmed by the sudden connection between us. Then a painful feeling rushed through me. My wolf was coming. She pushed through my skin. My bones felt like they were breaking, and a loud cry of pain escaped me. “It’s okay. I’ve got you.” He lifted me into his arms and carried me through the back door. He understood why I had been walking toward it before I crashed into him. The back entrance was quiet, far away from the birthday party, and nobody would hear me. “Where am I going?” His voice was steady, but I could hear his heart racing as I rested my head against his chest. “Up three floors. My bedroom.” My voice was so quiet that he could barely hear me. “You live here? You’re the wolfless daughter?” His voice softened, almost more than he probably intended. “Yes. Bella.” He carried me up three floors and walked around looking for my bedroom door. It took up almost the entire third floor, more like my own private apartment than a bedroom. His warmth and the strength of his body seemed to take away some of my pain. “Your wolf is awake. I can feel her. My wolf is going crazy.” His voice was low, and he didn’t seem able to hide his emotions. “Why is my wolf awake now?” A sharp pain shot through me. “Our mate bond woke her up. What’s her name? My wolf needs to know her name.” “Stormy. Her name is Stormy. She’s pure white.” He stopped walking and tightened his arms around me. “She’s pure white?” His voice was filled with disbelief. “That’s the strongest wolf a woman can have. There hasn’t been a pure-white female wolf seen in two hundred years.” His lips lowered and pressed gently against the top of my head. It was a kiss Leo often gave me. But this man made me feel something completely different. Safety. Love. Peace. Comfort. He was my mate.
