Chapter 11: The Last Moon

1592 Words
The black moon hung above Nymor like a broken eye. Silver cracks stretched across its surface, growing wider with every passing minute. Beneath it, the ancient city trembled. Elyan stood at the entrance of the Moon King's palace with Kael, Lyra, Seraphine, and Aethron. For the first time, nobody spoke. They could all feel it. The Veil was opening. And whatever waited beyond it was coming. Elyan looked toward the palace. "Where is my mother?" Aethron pointed toward the highest tower. "Inside." Elyan started walking. Kael grabbed his arm. "Wait." Elyan turned. "What?" Kael looked at him seriously. "Whatever happens in there, don't let them convince you that you aren't human." Elyan frowned. "Why would they?" "Because that's what they want you to believe." Kael released his arm. "You are my son. Remember that." Elyan nodded. Then they entered the palace. The halls were empty. No guards stood at the doors. No servants moved through the corridors. The entire palace felt abandoned. Yet Elyan could hear something. A heartbeat. Slow. Powerful. Coming from somewhere beneath the floor. Thump. Thump. Thump. He stopped. "Do you hear that?" Lyra nodded. "The Veil." Aethron looked at the floor. "It's beneath us." Seraphine raised her sword. "Then let's get to it." They continued. At the end of the corridor stood an enormous silver door. It opened before they touched it. Beyond it was a circular chamber. Elyan's mother stood at the center. She held the Moon Crown in both hands. Elyan stopped. "Mom." She looked at him. For a moment, she said nothing. Then she smiled. "Elyan." He ran toward her. She embraced him tightly. "I thought you were dead." "I know." "You knew where I was." "Yes." "You knew Dad was alive." She looked toward Kael. "Yes." Elyan stepped back. "Why didn't you tell me?" His mother lowered her eyes. "Because I was afraid." "Of what?" "Of losing you." "You already lost me." "I know." Her voice trembled. "But I wanted you to have a chance to grow up without becoming what the Firstborn wanted." Elyan looked at the Moon Crown. "What do they want from me?" His mother became serious. "The Veil." The floor shook. Dust fell from the ceiling. A deep sound echoed through the chamber. Aethron looked toward the door. "They're here." Kael drew his sword. "How many?" "Enough." The palace doors exploded. Dark figures entered the chamber. At their center was Caelan. The former Moonbound warrior removed his silver mask. "You finally brought him to us." Elyan stepped forward. "You keep calling me the heir." Caelan smiled. "Because you are." "I'm not." "You don't understand your own blood." "Then explain it." Caelan walked closer. "Long before the seven kingdoms existed, the Firstborn ruled the space between worlds." Elyan listened. "They discovered the Moonfire and learned that it could connect different worlds." Caelan pointed toward him. "Your ancestors were chosen to carry that power." "And my father?" "Your father was one of the few who learned the truth." Kael stepped forward. "Enough." Caelan looked at him. "You ran from us." "I chose my family." "You chose weakness." Kael tightened his grip on his sword. "No." He looked at Elyan. "I chose him." Caelan turned back to Elyan. "Your father betrayed the Firstborn. Your mother hid you. Aethron tried to control the Moonfire." He smiled. "And now you're the only one who can open the final gate." Elyan shook his head. "I won't." Caelan's smile disappeared. "You don't have a choice." Elyan raised his hand. Silver fire appeared around his fingers. "I always have a choice." The Firstborn attacked. Kael charged Caelan. Their swords collided. Seraphine fought beside him, while Lyra summoned roots through the palace floor. Aethron raised his hand. A wave of silver magic swept across the chamber. The Firstborn warriors were pushed backward. Elyan stood at the center. His mother approached him. "Listen carefully." "What?" "The crowns aren't weapons." She handed him the Moon Crown. "They are keys." "Keys to the Veil?" "Yes." "Then why gather them?" "Because they can also close it." Elyan stared at her. "How?" She looked toward the ceiling. "Someone has to make the choice." Aethron understood. "No." Elyan looked at him. "What?" Aethron stepped forward. "There has to be another way." His mother shook her head. "There isn't." Kael stopped fighting. "What are you saying?" She looked at him. "The Veil can only be sealed from the inside." Kael's face changed. "No." Elyan understood. "You mean me." His mother nodded. "You are the only one who can enter and return." Kael shook his head. "He's not going." Elyan looked at him. "Dad—" "No." Kael stepped between Elyan and the gate. "I spent seventeen years trying to protect you." "You can't protect me forever." "I can try." Elyan smiled sadly. "I know." The palace shook violently. A c***k opened across the floor. Darkness appeared beneath it. The Veil. The Firstborn stopped fighting. Every creature in the chamber turned toward the opening. A voice filled the palace. "Open." Elyan felt the Moonfire burning through his body. The other crowns appeared. The Forest Crown. The Sea Crown. Then the remaining crowns from the ancient kingdoms. Seven crowns floated around him. Caelan stared. "Yes." He stepped forward. "Open the gate." Elyan looked at the crowns. Then at his mother. Then at his father. Then at his friends. He finally understood why the Firstborn had wanted him. They didn't need a servant. They needed someone who could choose for them. Someone who could open the door willingly. Elyan closed his eyes. He remembered his childhood. His mother's stories. His father's absence. The first time he discovered the Moonfire. Marrow. Eldryn. Serath. Every person he had met along the way. He opened his eyes. "I choose this world." The crowns began glowing. Caelan shouted: "No!" Elyan raised both hands. "I choose my family." Silver light erupted from his body. "I choose my friends." The crowns began cracking. "I choose my own life." The seven crowns shattered. A tremendous wave of energy spread through the palace. The Firstborn screamed. The Veil began closing. Caelan reached for Elyan. "You belong to us!" Elyan looked at him. "No." He raised his hand. "I belong to myself." The darkness collapsed. The Firstborn were pulled backward. One by one, they disappeared beyond the closing gate. Caelan was the last. He looked at Kael. Then Elyan. "We will return." Elyan shook his head. "No." The Gate closed. Caelan disappeared. Silence filled the chamber. Elyan collapsed. Kael caught him. "Elyan!" "I'm okay." His mother knelt beside him. The Moon Crown was gone. The silver mark on Elyan's arm had faded. For the first time since his journey began, he felt completely ordinary. He looked at his mother. "Is it over?" She smiled. "For now." Elyan frowned. "For now?" She laughed softly. "You'll learn that the world is never completely finished with its problems." Aethron approached. "The Veil is sealed." Lyra looked toward the shattered crowns. "And the kingdoms?" "They're safe." Seraphine smiled. "Then we actually did it." Elyan looked at his hands. "I thought it would feel different." "Different how?" Lyra asked. "I thought I'd feel powerful." Kael smiled. "Instead?" "Empty." His mother touched his shoulder. "That's because you finally have nothing controlling you." Elyan looked at her. She smiled. "You are free." They left Nymor before sunrise. The city was quiet. The black moon had disappeared. In its place was the ordinary silver moon that had watched over the world for thousands of years. They reached the coast as the sun rose. Elyan looked back at Nymor. "Will the Firstborn ever return?" Aethron looked at the horizon. "Perhaps." Seraphine sighed. "That's reassuring." Aethron almost smiled. "The difference is that now we know what they are." Kael placed a hand on Elyan's shoulder. "And we know what we're fighting for." Elyan looked at his father. "What happens now?" Kael looked toward the kingdoms. "Now we rebuild." Epilogue Months passed. The seven kingdoms began repairing what the war had destroyed. Marrow reopened its gates. The forests of Eldryn grew stronger. Serath returned to the sea. Valen rebuilt its walls. The people eventually learned the truth about the Moonbound and the Firstborn. But Elyan refused every offer to become a king. He didn't want a throne. He wanted a life. So he traveled. Sometimes with Lyra. Sometimes with Seraphine. Sometimes with Kael. He studied ancient magic and visited kingdoms he had only heard about in stories. For the first time, he wasn't running from his past. He was discovering his future. One evening, Elyan stood beneath the Heartwood in Eldryn. Lyra approached. "Still thinking?" "Always." "About what?" Elyan looked at the moon. "About who I am." Lyra smiled. "After everything you've been through, you still don't know?" Elyan shook his head. "No." She laughed. "Good." "Good?" "Means you still have something left to discover." Elyan smiled. A silver leaf drifted from the Heartwood. He caught it. For a moment, the leaf glowed. Then it became ordinary. Elyan looked at it carefully. He heard a familiar voice in the wind. "Choose your own path." His mother's voice. He smiled. "I will." Far beneath the mountains, in a place no kingdom could reach, a tiny c***k appeared in the darkness. A whisper escaped. "Not yet." The c***k vanished. The world remained peaceful. For now. Elyan looked toward the moon one final time. Then he turned away and walked into the forest. The age of the Moonbound was over. But the story of Elyan Vale had only just begun. THE END
