Chapter 7: Homecoming

747 Words
Cassandra’s POV It’s late when I hear the swooping of wings. My brother and Phoenix are finally back. I would be lying if I said I wasn’t worried. They’ve been out hunting and terrorizing a coven that popped up just outside of the Kingdom. My brother is the strongest, fiercest, dragon I have ever met but sometimes his anger can cloud his judgement. He has been on a witch hunt since the day he was cursed. It’s a dangerous job. I can only hope they have returned unharmed. If anything happened to either one of them, well I am not sure how I would survive. Phoenix isn’t just my brother’s best friend, he’s my true love mate, even though he hasn’t marked me yet I know when he works up the nerve to ask my brother permission his mark will seal our love and our souls. I stroke my neck, and long for the comfort I could find in my mark. Slowly I rise, wrapping my toned body in a heavy fur blanket to shield myself from the crisp fall air and walk out onto the private balcony to meet them. As I step out into the cool night air they are both just finishing shifting back. I walk swiftly towards Phoenix with a mission wrapping my arms around him and planting a kiss deeply on his lips. I steal a deep breath of his scent, pine and toasted marshmallow fill my nostrils and I instantly feel whole again. As I step back I catch my brother's eye.  He mutters, as he runs a hand through his dark brown hair, ‘I will never get used to that.”  “Get used to what?” I ask him genuinely confused.  “My best friend kissing my sister of course,” Cash chuckles.  “Would anyone else really be good enough for her,” Phoenix responds with a mischievous grin.  “Boys, you both know there is no one better suited than Phoenix to be my mate. Now tell me did everything go well?” I question, carefully changing the subject. I am sincerely interested to know if they were able to eradicate the problem, or if we needed to be prepared for a retaliatory attack.  “Everything went exactly as planned. There are no survivors. It seems our informant has proven themselves to be useful after all,” I relay to my my sister, “ In fact Nix do me a favor and be sure to let Axel and the other guards know to keep my informant well fed and a bit more comfortable in the dungeon. I am sure the 2 of you will be retiring soon, and I myself am planning to head off to bed early after a nice relaxing bath.”  I am quick to chastise my brother, “ Cash quit calling Phoenix by that ridiculous childhood nickname. He is in a position of authority now and needs to be called by his real name.” Cash has been calling Phoenix, Nix, for as long as I  can remember. I, however,  have always loved his real name. It fits him remarkably. Especially after he shifted and revealed his dragon the first time. I’ve been in love with him since I was born in a way, and I think deep down he always loved me back. I constantly followed my brother and his friends around pestering him as far back as I can remember. Phoenix was the only one who included me in their fun and had the patience to put up with me. I only recently came of age and discovered my mate bond to him, though we both suspected and we definitely acted on those suspicions on more than one occasion. If my brother is offering me a night with Phoenix all to myself I am not going to waste any time acting on it. I don’t even want to give him the opportunity to change his mind. Besides, he’s always a bit more aggressive in the bedroom after a good fight. A slight smile creeps across my lips as I imagine the thrills that await me.  I turn to Phoenix with a sultry look and suggest, “to bed then dear?”  Phoenix sends me a wink back then smolders, “why yes to bed.” He then takes me by the hand and leads me away to our bedroom. Turning to flash a smile and shrug playfully at my brother.
