Chapter 6: A Dragon's Rage

1267 Words
Cash’s POV My large golden talons grasp the crumbling stone wall tightly. Bits of rubble fall careening to the ground bouncing off the walls and tumbling into the crashing waves below. The cool sea breeze blows across my scales and they ripple with agitation in response. Night is just beginning to fall so I will be able to blend in nicely and take the rogue village by surprise. I will teach them to try and double cross the King of the Hidden Mountains, stupid witches, they can never be trusted. It’s growing darker and with every passing minute I am becoming more and more impatient. I must control my rage and stay in stealth mode. I try to take a deep breath to calm myself. The salty air burns my nostrils and that just irritates me more. As I let out a deep breath smoke flares from my nostrils. I glance upwards towards the sky, the pale moon shines down casting light onto my scales. There are a few clouds in the distance as soon as the moon is covered I will make my move. Just a few more minutes and then justice will be served, burning hot justice. I feel the fire bubbling deep in my stomach begging to break free. WHOOSH Phoenix my first in command, or Nix as I prefer to call him, lands next to me not so gently. Several stones crumble beneath his talons and splash into the sea. Luckily the witches are celebrating the coming harvest moon quite loudly or I would be upset with him for potentially blowing our cover. “I’m sorry I am late Sire, your sister wouldn’t let me leave,” he sends with a nervous laugh. “Nix, just don’t even go there, thinking about you and my sister is the last thing I want on my mind right now,” I quickly send back. “You seem restless, did I hold you up?” Nix asks carefully. I stretch my massive black wings and shift my talons causing more stones to go falling into the waves. Night has fallen heavily now and I am sure my midnight blue scales will help me blend well in the night sky. I sigh heavily and glance over at Nix before responding, “No I am waiting on those clouds to finish covering the moon. Just a few more minutes now and it will sink back behind them creating the perfect opportunity for us to make our move.” “I will wait patiently then and watch for your signal,” Nix replies faithfully. That’s what I love about Nix, he trusts my judgment, doesn’t ask unnecessary questions, and gets the job done. It’s probably why we have been such good friends for so long. It also made it an easy choice to name him my First in Command when the time came. Aside from being fiercely loyal, he is also very skilled in battle. I steal a quick glance to make sure his dark red and orange scales will be concealed by the night sky. If it’s not dark enough he might be spotted easily and give us away. I send him a quick run down of the plan since the moon is almost covered, “count to 10 after I take off then I want you to fly 2 spans above me so you are not spotted. When you see me drop down, take an extra circle around the village before you drop and join me. I am going to take out the village square first and work from the center outwards. I want you to start on the outside and work your way towards the village square. I want no survivors and the entire village burned to the ground. It’s a rogue coven and this should be easy enough just the two of us. Maybe 100 witches at the most. Move swiftly, we want to take them by surprise. Do you understand?” “Understood!” Nix sends back quickly. “Alright then here we go,” I send, “remember quiet your wings stealth mode. Fly straight up then we circle.” With that I push off the stone wall causing the chunk I was resting on to crumble off completely and hit the sea with a large splash. The moon is fully engulfed behind the clouds. I push my wings flying higher and higher until I am well above the village. I begin my circle counting to 10 and waiting for Nix to take his place above me. As soon as I feel him in place I begin my circling descent. I can feel the fire bubbling more intensely. My normally turquoise eyes flash to black as I let my dragon take full control. My anger is seething beneath my scales and pulsing through my enormous body. One more swoop and then the witches will burn. Screams sound from the celebration as I open my mouth letting the fire erupt and engulf the entire center of the village. The smoke is billowing up into the dark night and the moon shines down illuminating my handy work. I see the flames moving from the outskirts of the small village creeping in towards the center. The smoke is thick and the flames lick the buildings and houses melting them and turning them to piles of smoldering ash. I circle wider, swooping down to send another burst. I let out a large screech and then release more flames from my fiery mouth. The entire village is on fire now. I land gently to go searching for survivors trying to run. The ground is hot as it burns beneath my feet, but it doesn't hurt me it only fuels me. I dig my claws into the hot dirt feeling the heat penetrate my scales. It feels amazing. It heats my core. “Hit the ground,” I send to Nix, “No survivors!” “As you command my king! Permission to snack?” He asks. “If you must,” I send back irritated. Suddenly my scales tremble. I turn swiftly to see the high priestess holding my tail and trying to cast a spell. My eyes flash from black to turquoise as I take back full control. Oh I am going to enjoy this I think blowing smoke from my nostrils. The fire burns my throat as I feel my rage exploding each step the fire grows hotter as my talons dig into the hot earth and ash. She stands paralyzed in fear before me. I am inches from her face and I can feel her heart pounding. “Please,” she begs. “ I can fix this, let me right my wrongs.” she cries out falling to her knees. I open my mouth and send the fire shooting out scorching her body. My eyes flash black as I rip off her head and devour it in one gulp. The mission is a success. No survivors. I jump onto the fountain in the middle of the village and the stone strains beneath my massive body. Looking around I am satisfied. Everything as far as my eyes can see is covered in red hot fire. I crouch there shaking with anger admiring my handy work. That will be the last time I let a witch double cross me. I let out one final screech into the night and take off for home with Nix flanking me.
