Chapter Twenty-Six-- The Ultimatum

853 Words
The meeting room was packed by twelve fifty-five, every player and staff member crammed into a space meant for half as many people, the air thick with nervous energy nobody bothered to hide. Elena stood at the front, tablet in hand, expression carved from stone. Daniel stood a careful distance from Mia, close enough to appear organizationally consistent, far enough to avoid any obvious statement. "Thank you all for coming on short notice." Elena said, voice carrying without needing volume. "I'll keep this brief, because I know most of you would rather be preparing for Saturday's match than sitting in this room." A ripple of tired laughter moved through the group, quickly settling back into tense silence. "The board met this morning." Elena continued. "Given the media attention of the past week, they've asked me to implement new conduct guidelines, effective immediately, for all coaching staff and players. I want to walk through them now, together, so there's no confusion later." Mia's stomach tightened. Beside her, she felt more than seeing Daniel go very still. "First all one-on-one coaching sessions must now be logged, timestamped, and available for review upon request. No exceptions, regardless of reason or player." Elena said, reading from her tablet. "Second any coach or staff member found to have engaged in a romantic relationship with a player will face immediate termination, full stop, no appeal process." The room went utterly silent. Mia felt every eye that wasn't looking at her anyway, felt the weight of an entire team absorbing a policy clearly written with two specific people in mind. "Third." Elena continued, voice unwavering despite the tension thickening around her. "Any player found to have knowingly facilitated a violation of the above through silence, deception, or active participation will face disciplinary action up to and including suspension from competition." Mia's blood ran cold. This wasn't a warning anymore. This was a weapon, sharpened and pointed directly at her, dressed up in the language of institutional policy. "Are there questions?" Elena asked, scanning the room. Nobody spoke. Mia felt Sofia's eyes flick toward her once, worried, before quickly looking away. "Good." Elena said. "These guidelines take effect immediately. I expect full compliance from everyone in this room, without exception. That's all. Dismissed." The team filed out slowly, murmuring amongst themselves, the weight of the new policy settling over the whole squad like a physical thing. Mia stayed rooted in place, unable to make her legs move, watching Daniel do the same three feet away, both of them frozen under the same impossible new reality. Elena approached them once the room had cleared, tablet tucked under one arm, expression softening just slightly now that the audience had gone. "I wanted you both to hear that in the room, with everyone else, rather than privately." Elena said. "I know how that sounds. I promise you it wasn't cruelty. It was a strategy. If I'd pulled you aside separately, it would have looked like special treatment. This way, it's simply policy applied evenly, visible to everyone." "Suspension from competition." Mia said, voice shaking despite every effort to control it. "For 'facilitating.' What does that even mean, Elena? What counts as facilitating?" "I genuinely don't know yet." Elena admitted. "The board wrote it broadly, which gives me some discretion in how it's applied. That discretion is the only thing standing between you and a much harsher immediate consequence, Torres. I'd suggest you both take that seriously." "We understand." Daniel said, voice tight, controlled in the specific way that told Mia exactly how much effort that control was costing him. "I hope you do." Elena said, gathering her things, pausing at the door before she left. "For what it's worth I don't want to lose either of you. I've made that clear before and I'll say it again. But I can't protect you from a board that's decided to make an example out of this situation. All I can do is give you the clearest possible warning of exactly where the line is now." She left, and Mia and Daniel stood alone in the emptied meeting room, the new policy hanging between them like something with actual physical weight. "Suspension." Mia said finally, voice barely above a whisper. "They could suspend me. For nothing I've actually done." "They could." Daniel said. "Which means we can't give them anything to point to. Not one thing, Mia. Not a late session, not a conversation that lasts too long, not anything." "That's not distance anymore." Mia said. "That's total separation." "I know." Daniel said, and something in his voice cracked slightly, the careful control finally giving way to something rawer underneath. "I don't know how else to protect you from this." Mia's phone buzzed in her pocket, breaking the heavy silence between them. She almost ignored it, exhausted past the point of caring about one more interruption. She checked it anyway, an old habit refusing to break even now. It was Sofia. A single line, sent to Mia alone, nothing else attached. “I think I know who leaked the Herald story. It's someone on the board.”
