The Safe House

Naomi's POV The drone circled once, then twice, before dipping lower, close enough for me to see the camera lens moving from side to side as it searched the area. I grabbed my father's arm. "Dad, it sees us." Darrell didn't flinch. "No. It sees the wreck, not the cabin. We're shielded." He pulled me away from the window, his grip firm and urgent. "But they'll send a ground team soon, probably within the hour. We need to move." "Move where?" My voice cracked. "Dad, I can barely stand." He looked at me properly then, taking in my bloodied clothes, swollen belly, and the dark circles beneath my eyes. Something in his expression softened. "Then we make a stand." He guided me back toward the couch. "Stay there. Don't move." I opened my mouth to argue. "Naomi." His voice became sharp, and for a moment I heard the general in him. "You're carrying a child, you're injured, and you've been through hell. Stay here." I stayed. Darrell moved through the cabin with the focus of a man preparing for war. He opened hidden compartments and brought out equipment he had kept there for emergencies, then moved around the walls, removing wooden panels and revealing reinforced steel plating beneath them. He had built this place to survive an attack. He had been preparing for war his entire life. And now the war had finally reached his doorstep. I watched him work as my heart continued pounding and an ache spread through my belly. The baby kicked softly, almost as if it were checking on me. I placed my hand over the swell and whispered, "I know. I'm scared too." Darrell stopped what he was doing and turned toward me. "You talk to the baby?" I felt embarrassed. "It helps. It listens." He stared at me for a long moment before walking over and kneeling in front of the couch, gently placing his hand over mine. His hand was large, rough, and warm. "It's real, isn't it?" he asked quietly. "Not just an experiment. It's alive. It's really there." I nodded as tears filled my eyes. "It's real, Dad. I don't know what it is, but I love it. I love it so much that sometimes it scares me." Darrell looked at me, his daughter, the soldier he had raised, and then at the place where his grandchild was growing. For a moment, the retired general disappeared, and all I could see was my father. Tears slipped down his weathered cheeks. He quickly wiped them away and stood. "Then we protect it," he said roughly. "We protect both of you, no matter what it takes." He turned and walked toward the radio in the corner. After adjusting the frequency, he pressed the communication button. "Mark. Are you there?" Static filled the cabin. Then Mark's voice came through, broken and worried. "Dad. I heard the crash. Is she—" "She's alive," Darrell interrupted. "But she's injured, and Vivian has already sent hunters. The entire forest could be crawling with them by nightfall. Where are you?" "Forty kilometers away. I took a transport. I'm coming." Darrell's hand tightened around the radio. "They'll track you." "I know." Mark's voice became firm. "That's the point. They'll follow me, and that will give you more time." "Mark—" "She's my sister, Dad, and she's carrying my niece. I'm not going to let her die." The radio went silent. Darrell stared at it for a moment before setting it down and turning toward me. "He's good," he said quietly. "He's the best pilot I ever trained. He'll buy us a few hours." I tried to stand, but pain shot through my injured leg. "I'm not staying here while he risks his life." Darrell looked at me. For a moment, I could see the conflict in his eyes. He was my father, and he wanted to protect me, but he was also a soldier who knew exactly what kind of situation we were facing. Finally, he nodded. "Fine. You fight, but you listen to me. When I tell you to retreat, you retreat. When I tell you to hide, you hide. Do you understand?" "Yes, sir." A small smile appeared on his face. "That's my girl." --- **TWO HOURS LATER** The first shots came at dusk. Darrell had prepared the forest around the safe house with defensive traps and warning systems. I had watched him set them up with the careful precision of someone who had spent decades learning how to use the environment to his advantage. I hated knowing what was coming, but I understood why he had done it. We were outnumbered, and Vivian Ford wasn't going to stop until she found me. I crouched behind the reinforced wall with my sidearm in my trembling hands. My ribs ached, my injured leg burned, and every movement reminded me that my body was already exhausted. Still, I forced myself to breathe and focus. You were made for this. You were trained for this. You have survived worse. *Mark still hadn't come.* I didn't let myself think about what that might mean. Not yet. The first explosion shook the trees. Voices and movement followed as the attackers rushed forward. Darrell's voice came through the communication system, calm and controlled. "First wave down. They'll send more." I looked through the window and saw figures moving through the smoke. They wore dark uniforms and glowing visors, and they moved with the confidence of soldiers who had been trained for situations exactly like this. I raised my weapon and fired. One attacker fell. Then another. My aim was still good, and my body still remembered how to fight, but every movement sent discomfort through my belly, and my leg was starting to buckle under me between shots. I ignored it. The baby kicked each time the gunfire echoed through the forest. Angry. Frightened. Alive. I couldn't stop. If I stopped, they would take me. They would take my child. They wanted to turn my baby into a weapon. They would have to get through me first. The second wave arrived faster than I expected. They broke through the outer defenses, and suddenly I heard Darrell shout from somewhere outside. Then came a burst of gunfire. And silence. "Dad!" I rushed from behind the wall and limped toward the cabin entrance. My vision blurred. My injured leg gave way, and I fell onto the grass. Through the smoke, I saw him, on the ground near the tree line, not moving. A soldier stood over him. He was alive. I could see his chest rising. But he was down, and I was too far to reach him. Before I could get back up, someone stepped in front of me. "Naomi Carter." I looked up. Vivian Ford stood over me. Her uniform was still perfectly clean, and her expression remained calm despite the chaos around her. She smiled. "So nice to finally meet you in person." I glared at her. "You're going to regret this." She gave a quiet laugh. "I've survived worse things than you, dear. You don't frighten me." She reached toward me, but before she could do anything else, the baby moved. Hard. A strange sensation spread through my body, the same crackling warmth I'd felt in the vent shaft when the metal hummed, only stronger this time, like something in me had finally answered back. Heat. Light. Power. The air around me seemed to vibrate, and a sudden wave of energy burst outward from my body. Vivian was thrown backward, crashing into a tree, while several soldiers around us were knocked off their feet. I stared at my hands in disbelief. My wrist hurt badly, my leg could barely support me, and my belly felt strangely warm. Then Silas's voice filled my mind. "Run." I didn't question him. I turned and ran. Well, I tried to run. My injured leg made every step a fresh stab of pain, and my body screamed at me to stop, but I pushed deeper into the forest, ignoring everything except the sound of Vivian shouting behind me. "Bring her back! BRING HER BACK!" I didn't look back. I couldn't. I stumbled between the trees, fell once, forced myself back up, and continued moving until I found a shallow hollow beneath an old oak tree. I crawled inside and curled myself around my belly. My breathing was heavy, and exhaustion was taking over. Somewhere in the distance, I could hear footsteps and voices moving through the forest. They were searching for me. I stayed completely still. I stayed silent. Dad's alive. Mark's still out there somewhere. And somehow, despite everything that had happened, so was I.
