Amelia barely slept that night.
The contract lay on her bedside table, staring at her like a warning she couldn't ignore. Every time she closed her eyes, she imagined her father losing everything.
By morning, she had made her decision.
She walked downstairs and found her father sitting alone at the dining table.
“Dad.”
He looked up immediately. “Amelia?”
“I'll do it.”
Her father's face fell.
“No.”
Amelia sat beside him. “You don't have to protect me anymore. I know what I'm choosing.”
“This isn't something you should have to do for me.”
“I know,” she whispered. “But I can't watch you lose everything.”
Before he could respond, the doorbell rang.
Amelia already knew who it was.
Adrian.
She opened the door and found him standing there in a dark suit, looking as calm as ever.
“I've made my decision,” she said.
His eyes studied her face.
“And?”
“I'll marry you.”
For a moment, Adrian said nothing.
Then he stepped inside.
“You understand the agreement?”
“Yes.”
“One year.”
“I know.”
“No falling in love.”
Amelia forced a small smile. “That won't be a problem.”
Something flickered in Adrian's eyes, but it disappeared almost immediately.
He handed her a pen.
“Then sign.”
Amelia stared at the contract one last time.
Her hands trembled slightly as she signed her name.
Amelia Carter.
Adrian took the pen from her.
He signed his name underneath hers.
Adrian Black.
The agreement was official.
Amelia looked at him, suddenly realizing that her life had changed forever.
“When do we get married?” she asked.
“Three days from now.”
Her eyes widened.
“Three days?”
Adrian nodded.
“There is one more thing you should know.”
“What?”
“You won't be marrying me as Amelia Carter.”
She frowned.
“Then who will I be?”
Adrian looked directly into her eyes.
“My wife.”
And somehow, those two words frightened her more than the contract ever had.
