Chapter 29
Chris’s POV
3 months, that’s how long it had been since either me or Michael had seen Rebecca. It had also been 2 months since I had seen my own twin, sure he answered his phone, but he refused to leave his office, day or night. How had our lives come to this? Kira was the only one truly happy at the minute. Our wedding was 3 months away and she was beaming around the office. Janine had transferred over to Michael’s team because he refused to take Kira, still standing by the fact that she was a liar.
So, my only lead designer was Kira but aside from the two original ideas she had yet to bring anything to the table. I was slowly starting to wonder if maybe Michael and Rebecca were right, but if they were, that would mean I had yet again betrayed both of them over something ridiculous and again over Kira. The dolphin design was yet to be published as Michael refused to let me have the rights to it, stating it wasn’t Kira’s. We had argued over it a huge amount, but he locked me out of the shared drive then kicked me out of his office.
“Kira, can you come into the office.” I called to her through my open door. She did just that and put on a huge smile.
“Whats up baby?” She cooed at me over my desk.
“Do you have any designs for me? Please Kira. I’m dying here. Michael has become a recluse. Everyone’s left my team for his and now you’re holding out on me. You told me you have three other designs. Where are they? We get married in three months, but I might be bankrupt by then.” I whined to her, and I knew I was being whiney. I saw her eye twitch as if she was annoyed.
“Chris, I’ll get them to you asap. I just want to perfect them. Oh! Speaking of perfect, my daddy wants to see me this afternoon, Is that ok?” I just stared at her, lost for words. She wasn’t worried at all. What was wrong with her. I just merely nodded and waved for her to get out. She smiled and blew me a kiss before leaving the office, grabbing her bag on the way out. I sighed heavily and decided I couldn’t do any more work today. I headed to the local bar we always frequented and ordered a strong, double whisky. I sat at our usual table and sighed heavily, wishing both Michael and Rebecca were here.
Rebecca’s POV
3 months, the amount of time that my best friends hadn’t spoken to me, or I hadn’t seen them. Well, that wasn’t entirely true. Michael drove by every night and stood looking up to my balcony having a cigarette before driving off again. He looked rough and I felt awful. I had sneaked looks every now and again and I wasn’t sure whether he saw me or not. I felt guilty that I was holding him mostly responsible for this. My anger at him had disappeared but now I felt like I couldn’t just reach out to him. I felt like I had put too much distance between us.
Chris had also sent me the occasional email from work, disguised as a chain email but clearly aimed at keeping me in the loop of how the business was doing. The strangest thing though was that a week after everything happened, I found a year’s wages in my bank account. I had refused to touch it though and was living off my old wages and new one. I had managed to find a part time job in a fabric printing store. The hours were midday until 3 Monday to Friday so I knew I would miss the twins every day and wouldn’t bump into Kira.
Today I had finished work and was heading home when for some reason I decided to head into the local bar that we always frequented. I just wanted to see our old table, remember some happy times. I walked towards the bar and ordered a shandy but sat at the bar, not daring to sit at the table we always shared. I looked over to it though and was shocked to see Chris sat there, his head bowed, staring at his glass. My heart jumped into my throat. Luckily, he hadn’t seen me, and I wondered if I could slip out unnoticed before he did. I called to Mark, the bartender, to cancel my order and headed to the door, keeping my head low.
“Rebecca?” I heard his voice call, but I bolted to the door, not wanting to talk to him. I didn’t want to deal with this now, especially not Chris who had blatantly accused me of stealing, who had sided with Kira. Chris who had always been my number one, my best friend, my first love. Yes, Id considered talking to Michael, but he had said he would contact me when we could prove my innocence. Something that hadn’t happened yet.
I kept running, tears streaking down my face. I had reached my building and was punching the code into my street door when hands grabbed me roughly around the waist. I cried out and was turned around to face Chris. I looked into his eyes and tears flooded out of me as I pushed him away from me. He grabbed me by the shoulders though and looked into my streaming eyes. His eyes going from angry to concerned and finally to soft and gentle before he pulled me into an embrace. The tears wouldn’t stop falling and he punched in my door code and led me to my flat, his arm around my shoulder.
He beckoned for my house keys when we reached my flat and I shook my head no, but he grabbed my purse, tutting in annoyance and found them anyway. He opened the door and pushed me gently inside, sitting me on the sofa, still sobbing. He poured me a glass of water and sat down in the chair across from me, perched on the end. He folded his hands onto his knees and just looked at me. I couldn’t make eye contact and wanted him out of my flat but couldn’t form the words right now, every time I tried, they were just hiccups.
“Rebecca…” He started but just as he was beginning, both of our phones started vibrating. I had received a text from Janine and an email alert for some news I followed online. Chris’s was vibrating more than mine, and I knew he was receiving more alerts. My mouth dropped open when I read Janine’s text.
All the proof you needed, turn on TV to channel 5 news. Love Janine.
I got up and did as she asked as Chris was reading his messages with his brows furrowed. The news was a press release from the jewellery store owned by Kiras father, Leaf Industries. Outside was a short, balding man with Kira at his side and he was announcing that his daughter would be joining his team and that she was bringing along 7 marvellous designs. All of my designs barring my dolphin one and others from the company, one being Janines. I was glaring at the TV when I heard Chris gasping. When I turned to look at him, his eyes were mad, and he kept glancing between me and the TV.
“Is that enough proof for you?” I screamed at him, dissolving yet again into tears, but this time, they were tears of relief. I didn’t expect this to happen, but I was extremely grateful it had, even at the detriment of the Reves company. I sat back on the sofa, covering my eyes with my hands, trying to get my breath.
