Chapter 31
Rebecca's POV
Three days, that’s how long it had been since Kira had betrayed the Reves company. It had also been three days since I’d seen Michael. Id checked in with him and he seemed better, but he hadn’t been back to the company, always stating he was dealing with things on his end. I sighed at his latest text.
It might be a few more days, but we need to talk.
That never sounded good coming from someone you cared about. I wouldn’t blame him if he never wanted to see me again after all the mental anguish, I put him through. I fully expected him to tell me he was moving on.
I was sat in Chris’s office; we had figured out all the employees that had left the company with Kira. We had also traced all of the stolen work. Luckily Kira had only managed to actually take the designs not the notes or materials lists so we would be able to modify things and continue with the lines we had already planned to our customers. Chris’s father was livid with the Leaf family and was taking steps to sue them for multiple breach of contract. Chris seemed happy that things were getting sorted for the company but there was definitely a sadness within him at the betrayal from Kira. He had tried talking to her, but she just kept telling him to talk to “his best friend”. The jealousy ran deep with her against me, and I could see why but I had always acted nothing but friendly towards Chris. I would never come between him, and Kira and she knew that. Didn’t she? I replayed all of my actions since they got together over a year ago. Sure I had chatted to him, laughed, went out for drinks but never once had I actually made a move on him or asked him to leave her. I harboured my crush I silence. And any time Chris had wanted to move things forwards I had reminded him he was with Kira. But I guess it was always the woman who got the blame, right?
“Are you ok?” I asked as Chris was writing emails to most of our customers regarding the problem. He looked at me and sighed.
“Yeah, I guess I’m just rethinking my life. I mean, everything seemed so sure and set. Kira isn’t a bad person and I feel like most of this is my fault.” He sighed and leaned back in his chair, stretching his back. “I was so hung up on not being able to have you that I think the jealousy is entirely my fault. If I’d have just realised sooner, that I loved you like a sister and nothing more the none of this would have happened.” I shrugged.
“We can’t change whats already happened, but I know what you mean.” And I did, my regrets over my actions over the last few months were high on the surface. I missed Michael terribly.
“Father says we need something new and upcoming to claw back some respect in the design world. Any ideas?” He smiled. I frowned.
“Yeah, I do…”
“But?”
“But I’m not sure I can stay working here. It’s been nothing but problems. Michael is angry at me. You and I made things so much worse just by being stupid. We’re 26 for goodness’ sake, we were acting like teenagers.” He was nodding sadly. “I need to think about the future too. I think Michael might move on from me…”
“He didn’t for around 10 years Becca, so I doubt he will now. Sure, you blocked us out, but you had your reasons. I was being a d**k and you felt like Michael was taking my side too. He's just as distant with me at the minute and he won’t disown me so he won’t you either.” I shrugged again and smiled.
“We shall see what happens. But this mess needs sorting first.” I wondered if I should reach out to Kira and talk to her. Maybe this was all a move to try and hurt me and not actually hurt Chris. Maybe I would try once I actually spoke to Michael and sorted my own life out.
Chris’s POV
There was a huge sadness hanging over the company and we needed to do something to cheer everyone up. Besides the lawsuit, most things had been dealt with. I had thrown myself completely into my work to try and ignore the sadness I was feeling in my own heart. The designers were working on modifying their existing designs and releasing them before Leaf industries got a chance. Rebecca had agreed to hand over the rights to her dolphin design, stating that it was as much ours as it was hers, but she was still undecided on coming to work with us again.
Janine walked into my office smiling and seemed really happy with herself. She was cradling a lot of papers and sat in the chair across from me. I raised an eyebrow at her. Her grin was infectious and I smiled at her, practically bouncing up and down in the chair.
“I have a few plans…” She said, smiling from ear to ear.
“OK… shoot.” I said, trying not to laugh at her gushing.
The first was a new design for a bracelet. It was a new design that consisted of making the bracelet up from various other bits of jewellery, meaning every bracelet was actually unique to the wearer. There was a lot of intricacies to it as it involved catches and various chains to connect earings to bracelets and rings to them too. It was an interesting concept though and Janine was excited about it. She spent a long time showing me some of the various charms that could be added or taken away, she even spoke about watch versions and maybe even chokers eventually. I smiled at the idea and said we would have a meeting to discuss the details in more detail.
“My second idea is actually a collaboration with Michael. He feels like everyone needs to let down their hair and just have fun. Hes suggested hiring the local bar and throwing a party.” I started laughing and Janine looked at me strangely.
“What?”
“I had the exact same idea, good to know that we still think similarly.” I smiled.
“Well, he has a few other ideas, and he wants to talk to you. He’s asked if you’ll go to his place tonight to go over the details?” I nodded and looked at Janine.
“Janine? Be honest. Is something going on with you and Michael. You’ve gotten very close the last 3 months and hes only communicating through you mostly.” She laughed so loud I wondered what joke I had missed. She looked at me smiling.
“Michael will explain everything tonight. Good Afternoon Mr Reve.” And with that she got up to leave. I was confused but my head hurt, and I was worried about Rebecca. She hadn’t answered me directly, but the laugh seemed like she couldn’t believe the question I had asked. She was a pretty girl and smart and polite. She was small but she made up for it in ferociousness. I sighed, sending Michael a text that I would see him tonight.
Rebecca’s POV
I was sat at home, going over a few designs I had put together. I was extremely happy with a few of them, but others needed a lot of work. I sighed, putting down my pen. Why was I even designing when I wasn’t even sure I wanted to stay at the company anymore.
Michael was barely communicating with me and had refused to meet me over the last week. Chris was sad and I felt like being around him reminded him of all the mistakes we had both made. I had finally broken down to my mother and told her everything. She hadn’t given me much advice though, stating I needed to figure it out for myself. I knew she was right though. She had soothed me and asked me to go for a visit soon so she could feed me up and look after me though, which made me feel warm inside. I had laughed and agreed to go through once everything had a conclusion.
I had quit my part time fabric printing store. Stuck in limbo I had actually dipped into the wages that had been transferred to me. Chris had told me that he hadn’t authorised it and it hadn’t come out of the company wage packet so it must have come directly from Michael to make sure I was ok. I didn’t want to use them, but I needed the time to breathe and think. I heard a knock on the door and my heart leapt, hoping it was Michael.
“Oh, hi Janine.”
“Hello!” She sang brightly. “Disappointed it’s me?” She teased. I shrugged and moved to let her in the flat.
“I guess I was just holding out for Michael.”
“Well, that’s why I’m here!” She smiled even more brightly and handed me a card. An invitation? I looked at her confused. “Open it” Her eyes and face gave nothing away as she continued to smile brightly.
“A party?” I questioned as I read the details of a company party... on a Wednesday.
“Chris and Michael seem to think everyone needs it. I agreed. They’ve hired out your usual bar and are providing food and drinks for everyone and because it’s a weekday, they’ve even authorised the next day off for everyone. Michael will be there…” I saw her wiggle her eyebrows, but I sighed out loud.
“Yeah, he will, but I’m not technically an employee anymore, he hasn’t spoken to me so I’m not sure I should even come.” I saw panic in Janines eye.
“You’ve got to! Michael sent me here with the invitation. He wants you there.” I looked at Janine and jealousy creeped into my heart. He had been speaking to Janine all through this. She was pretty and sweet and feisty. I wouldn’t blame him for relying on her. Had he found her when he needed someone the most and she had crept into his heart. It seemed he was even spending time with her now when he was ignoring me.
“Ok, I’ll be there. Thanks Janine.” I smiled sadly at her, but she didn’t seem to notice and smiled brightly at me again before excusing herself.
“Oh, and wear something light coloured, pastel maybe. I feel like that would suit you the best.” I looked at her confused, but she didn’t elaborate, waved and walked out of my flat. I pouted, not happy that I absolutely would take her advice because most of my party clothes were pastels.
