Chapter 32

Chapter 32 Rebecca's POV I had decided on a peach-coloured summer dress. It was a tightly fitted bodice with a flaring skirt that stopped just above my knees. I paired it with a white cardigan and white flat shoes. The weather was warm and a little humid, so I wanted to dress lightly. Chris had texted me asking if I wanted a lift there, but I disagreed, stating I’d prefer to slip in unnoticed and hide in a corner somewhere. He had argued with me, but I didn’t want the attention. I was only really going to try and speak to Michael, to see he was ok. Chris had finally relented but told me I needed to sit at our usual table, to which I finally agreed. I grabbed the packet of cigarettes from my balcony, feeling like I would defiantly be needing them tonight and if I didn’t, Michael might. I also packed gum and my phone and purse. I also grabbed the invitation; just in case I needed it to get in. I walked slowly to the party, unsure what I was going to say to Michael once I actually saw him. I hoped if I walked solely and got there late then everyone would already be well into drinking and not even notice me. I could hear the music for a while before the bar came into sight. I decided that I wanted to smoke before I came into the building and hid around the corner to smoke. “Aww look at this one, she doesn’t know she has a dimple under her right eye when she smiles.” “This one is funny; she growls like a kitten when angry.” “This one talks about his favourite memory with her, I didn’t even know they had known each other more than a few months.” “What about this one? Her favourite colour isn’t a colour, it’s a prism of all of the colours.” “I guess he really loves her, who would have thought that tonight would turn into this.” I was extremely confused as to what the people outside were talking about. They seemed to be holding little fortune cookie notes. Curious, I decided it was time to sneak in. I saw a few people who smiled at me, some sadly but others genuinely smiled. I calmed down realising people weren’t as angry at me as I had thought. Maybe that’s because I was actually mad at myself for everything. I headed to our usual table and found Chris sat at it. He beamed and waved me over. I smiled, looking at him dressed in a full suit. “A suit for a party? Really?” I laughed as I got to the table and found a glass of champagne. “Also, Champagne? I thought this was a party. Where are the shots and finger food?” “Well…” He looked uncomfortable now. “It’s a different kind of party.” He shuffled nervously in his chair and tried not to make eye contact with me. He was hiding something and I wasn’t sure what. I looked around and saw there were decorations around, light peaches, purples and pinks with white and cream balloons, sashes of the same colours. There was also a large banner near the stage that read congratulations. My stomach lurched as I realised. “Is this an engagement party? Who? What?” I looked around for the happy couple. “Whose?” Chris smiled, it wasn’t sad, but it was muted. He seemed to be trying to be both happy but disappointed all at once. “You’ll see.” I don’t know why but my stomach felt heavy. I heard more people talking. “She knows when I’m sad, angry, happy and everything, even when no one else can read my icy exterior.” “She didn’t know I was there, really, until the last few months, yet she knows me better than anyone, even my brother. Awwww, that’s so cute.” Realisation hit me and I looked at Chris, he nodded at me, confirming my worst fear. Michael was engaged or getting engaged anyway. To whom? Why? Chris saw the panic rising in my eyes and reached for my hand. “Drink this and calm down Becca.” But I couldn’t, I was distraught it wasn’t me. I needed air. I needed to get outside. “Becca, seriously, just wait.” I stood up, shaking my head but as I did, I saw Michael walking in with Janine. No! Tears threatened to spill out of my eyes. Another betrayal. Why? Had I pushed Michael into her arms? He was dressed in a grey suit with a peach shirt and a peach tie. We would absolutely match normally, something he seemed to do unconsciously. I couldn’t even really blame him; it wasn’t really a betrayal even if my heart felt like it was. Chris grabbed my arm and tried to hold me back, but I pulled myself free, shaking my head to try and stop the tears from falling. I walked quickly towards the exit as Michael walked towards the stage, not even looking for me. The outside doors were closed by someone outside. I tried to get his attention to let me out, but he kept his back to the doors. I knew he could hear me so I slammed the door. Luckily the music was still loud so only those around me heard. I was so mad I growled, causing a few people around me to chuckle, which made me angrier. I slammed my back against the door, wishing I could disappear. Tears were threatening to pour out now. Had he really grown to love Janine after only a few months when he had loved me for over 10 years. I was having a nightmare wasn’t I. But then, maybe I deserved this. I looked around for another exit. The music stopped and I looked towards the stage. “Thank you everyone for joining us for what will hopefully be two amazing occasions in one.” Two occasions? “The first is the celebration of how hard you have all worked since the scandal that affected our company. Congratulations to everyone for all your hard work and your reward is free drinks all night. Please go wild but just try not to throw up on my suit!” Everyone laughed, and I was confused at this version of Michael. He was smiling and talking to everyone like he was their friend. I knew this side of him, but it was strange to see him act like this in front of everyone. I couldn’t peel my eyes away from him and he finally found my face in the crowd. He didn’t take his eyes off me, and I felt tears beginning to well up again. How could he look at me with no remorse? With love still in his eyes… “The second part of the evening is a little up in the air, but I would like to ask, who I hope will become, my future wife up on to the stage. Obviously, her answer changes what this party is celebrating.” I looked over to Janine, but she was crying and smiling at me. I was confused as people began looking at me. What? “Come on Becca, don’t keep him waiting.” “Wait, what?!” I cried out, too loudly, as there was no music now and I turned to see Chris stood right behind me, his hand on my back, pushing me towards the stage. “This, no…” I was pushed towards the stage, then Michael reached down and gave me his hand to get me up on the stage. I took it. He meant me. “Michael, I…” He shushed me and whispered in my ear. “I’m sorry, I wanted it to be perfect and prove I knew you the best. After all, you said I should know you better.” Tears finally began to stream down my face. Those comments, they were describing me and him, not Janine. Suddenly, he was on one knee in front of me with a small box. The tears didn’t stop, and I raised my hands to my mouth. It wasn’t real. He still loved me, he still wanted me.
