Chapter 14 Michael's POV Well s**t! Was all I could think to myself as I returned to Rebecca with a bottle of water. She was dozing on the bench seat in our private room, and I asked one of the waitresses to call us a taxi. As I carried her to the taxi, I wondered what I had done for Chris to have finally worked it out. Yes, I had had a crush on Rebecca for forever, but it blossomed to full blown love in our first year of college. There were many nights when both Chris and Rebecca would get in, extremely drunk, from a night out. Chris and I shared a flat instead of a dorm room, close to the night life, and it was quite large with a large sofa downstairs. Obviously, this meant Rebecca would often stay over at ours instead of walking the twenty minutes back to her dorm room. Neither of us minded but I was always the one on care duty after they both passed out. Many of those nights, Rebecca would babble on to me about how she loved Chris and how they would get married and all of that stupid teenage dribble. I would agree with her and feel my heart breaking every time. However, one of those nights, Chris had gone straight upstairs, leaving a drunken Rebecca with me. She was extremely happy and not ready for sleep and kept insisting I danced with her. She had her arms around my shoulders, head on my shoulder and told me how she had been kissing someone tonight, not Chris, someone else, and I was so shocked I immediately stopped dancing and looked at the top of her head. She looked up at me and her face slowly turned sad. She then jokingly asked me if I was sad because I hadn’t had a kiss from her and offered to give me one. I shook my head no and took my arms from around her waist and tried to remove her hands from me. The next minute she was actually kissing me. It wasn’t a peck but a full-on kiss, mouths opened, tongues probing each other’s mouths. She moved her hands into my hair, and I immediately wrapped my arms back around her, wondering if I was the one who was drunk or maybe I had mistakenly taken something, or maybe I had fallen asleep and was dreaming. When she pulled away from me, she smiled and put her head into my chest. I heard her mumble “sorry” I told her not to be sorry and that I actually loved her but the next minute she was falling asleep on my chest. I was livid at myself that I had taken advantage of her whilst she was so drunk and that I had opened my stupid mouth. I picked her up bridal style and settled her on the couch. As I reached over to grab the blanket from the back of the sofa, she grabbed my hand. “Thank you, Michael. You always look after me. I don’t deserve you.” She smiled, placed a kiss in my hand and turned over. It was a mere few seconds before she was breathing heavily, indicating she had fallen asleep again. The next morning, she didn’t remember the kiss with either me, or she didn’t want to and was pretending. However, Chris didn’t mention the kiss with the stranger either and they spent an awkward breakfast avoiding each other’s eyes. By the afternoon, though, they were back to their usual selves. Wreaking havoc and doing everything but study. I tried to forget the kiss but every time she got drunk there was hope she would do it again. I vowed to show her I cared for her and win her over however the more I saw Chris falling for her, the more I realised I needed to bite down my feelings. So that’s what I did, but I knew I could never marry someone else. I never showed Rebecca how I felt but also never forgot about her. I got into the taxi with Rebecca in my arms and took her to her flat. Both Chris and I had a key, so I let myself in and put her to bed. I didn’t get her changed but put some water, pain killers and a bowl at the side of her bed. I immediately then went to call Chris. I needed to explain to him. However, he wouldn’t accept any of my calls. I left a voicemail instead. “Chris, please, I absolutely never intend on following up with my feelings, I never have and never will. I never wanted you to find out though. Youre my brother but also my best friend. I love Rebecca, yes, but she’s never felt the same way about me, but I could never marry someone else, I would rather be alone. However, I didn’t know you would accept fathers proposed engagement. You cannot blame me for that. You can still fight it and probably should. Rebecca loves you and always has. Ive gotten Rebecca home safe, and I hope you are too. Ill talk to you Monday if you don’t want to speak before. I’m sorry!” I didn’t really know what else to say, I was never good at expressing myself and that was about as emotional as I had ever been. But I loved my brother deeply and never wanted this to happen. I made sure Rebecca was ok and set her phone alarm for 9am with a reminder to call me so I could make sure she was ok. I locked her into her flat and decided I needed the walk home to get some air, hoping Chris would call me back. Rebeccas POV I knew I was dozing off in the club and couldn’t help myself. I was already drunk before I had downed those vodka shots then the emotional outburst to Michael had wiped me out. I started drifting off but before I did, I called Chris’s phone, I needed to move on, for everyone’s sake. “Chris, I know I need to stop holding onto these feelings for you. I’m sorry that I secretly hope you and Kira will break up. I’m sorry that I get jealous and moody around her and I’m sorry that I keep clinging on to you. I love you, more than I think you know. I always will but I think its time for me to move on. I hope you and Kira will be extremely happy together. I will always be your best friend, and id like us to talk about this but I understand if after this you never want to speak to me again. I hope you had a fun night with Kira. Good night!” I hung up as tears started to flow down me again. I dozed off a little on the bench, waiting for Michael to bring me water but then next thing I remember was being held, tightly, by warm, strong arms and I let myself fall fully asleep. I didn’t awake until the next morning when my alarm went off at 9am.
