Chapter 51 Chris’s POV Well, here I was, staring at Michael's ceiling, trying to drown out the apparent noises of what Michael and Rebecca were doing. Jesus, Michael was a closeted s*x god with the sounds coming out of Rebecca’s mouth. I wondered if I should just leave. I could just slip my clothes back on and sneak out. However, I heard a door click and looked around to see Janine, hugging herself, coming out of the guest room. “Are you ok?” I asked, genuinely concerned. I hoped she wasn’t being kept awake by those two. “I just find it hard to sleep in other people’s houses.” She answered and looked like she was lost. “You know, a different bed, people in other rooms, not knowing the security system.” I sat up, moving the duvet so she could sit down. She seemed to be staring at me, but I couldn’t see properly due to the only light shining through the large window in the living room. She moved to sit beside me, and I didn’t realise I was holding my breath. Michael was right, I needed to talk to Janine, explain everything. “Do you want me to all a taxi? I was considering leaving too… I don’t think I can sleep.” I chuckled and Janine’s mouth opened as she heard the noise coming from Michael's bedroom. She laughed, putting her hand over her mouth. “No, I’m ok… I just…” “Janine I…” “Chris…” We began speaking at exactly the same time and I heard Janine laugh. “You go first.” I gulped back the saliva that was beginning to pool in my mouth from nerves. “I just wanted to talk to you… I… Theres a lot of bad stuff that’s happened over the last few months. I just wanted to set the record straight if you will listen.” I felt her put her hand on mine, and she nodded. “Ok, well…” I began telling her everything. How I thought I liked Rebecca but actually deep down I was confusing that love with sisterly love and lust added in, probably because I was holding back with Kira. I told her how I threw myself into the relationship with her after that despite not loving Kira and it was all a business arrangement. However, eventually I got used to the idea that we could build a life, I wouldn’t say it was love, more apathy. I was actively planning our wedding and playing at being happy. When I thought Rebecca had betrayed us, I was torn because I knew that woman better than anyone but Kira was in m head, again, the potential to play a family won. I knew I had to marry her no matter what, so even if she had stolen the designs, it was a small hurdle compared to going against my father. Then finally, seeing how happy she was with Michael, I knew I didn’t love Kira and my guilt over came me. I then talked about everything I had noticed about Janine over the past few weeks. Janine stayed quiet through most of it. “I like you a lot, Janine, I don’t want to mess this one up…” “Chris, I…” She started to say, and I stopped her. I couldn’t see her face, but I wanted to get everything out. The weight on my chest was too much. I did like this woman, and I wanted it to go right this time. I didn’t want her feeling like I was hiding anything or feeling second best to Rebecca. I also needed her to know what she was getting into if by some miracle she did like me back. My heart was pounding out of my chest as I ploughed on with the deal breaker. “Theres more.” I moved closer to her, and I could see her face now. She was frowning at me, biting her lip. “Kira says shes pregnant. The timing adds up to when I drunkenly slept with her without protection. I’m telling you because I want to be completely transparent with you. I don’t know if you like me back but if there’s an inkling you do. I don’t want it to be like before. I don’t want you jealous of Rebecca, I don’t want arrangements and plans. I want…” But before I could finish, she had placed her lips against mine. Her eyes were closed, but I could see faint tears in their corners. When she pulled away, I was still in shock. “Can I speak now?” She asked and I nodded, not trusting myself to speak anymore. She grabbed both my hands and held them. “I do like you. I have for a long while. I wouldn’t have looked after Kira if you hadn’t asked me. I would never have left Michael's team if I didn’t care, you might have seen it as me abandoning you, but it was because I couldn’t be around you, hurting yourself and betraying your best friend, trusting that…snake!” I saw the look of hatred she had for Kira and once again wondered how I hadn’t seen it. “I wouldn’t have come back to you. I would have stayed with Michael… he offered you know, a job for me on his team. I would never take it over you… And I would most definitely not be helping you now.” She took a deep breath. “Kira being pregnant is just a roadblock. Do you intend on getting back with her?” “Absolutely not!” I scoffed. No matter what, I wouldn’t go back there. If my father demanded it I would quit the company and find work elsewhere. “Ok, so you made a mistake, and you take responsibility. If you're sure it’s yours, then that’s the right thing to do.” “Wait, you think it might not be mine?” She bit her lip, biting back words she didn’t want to say. “Look, she did a ridiculously shitty thing with Rebecca. She also clearly wanted the company to fail in one way or another. She stole from people, not just you guys, and she was annoying as hell!” She sighed. “I would just be careful. Women have lied about these things before with less reasoning. Shes not a nice person…” She sighed and smiled, her eyes showing something I had only seen from Rebecca and Michael. It looked like love. “Also, I’m not jealous of Rebecca. Its obvious how much she cares for you, but she loves Michael, I mean… you only have to listen to know that. Shes strong, and I respect her. Ive grown to really care about her as a best friend the last few months. Despite her locking herself away from the Kira issue, she was still fighting to find evidence. She was working tirelessly to uncover anything she could. She has been about this too.” She chuckled and I laughed too. “Thank you, Janine. Have you always been this amazing?” “Yep, you just didn’t notice it.” I looked at her face, not knowing what else to say. I pulled her in for a hug. She didn’t hesitate to wrap her arms around me, and I sighed with content into her hair. She smelled like mint and camomile. I couldn’t help but smell her hair and sigh. “Chris?” I hummed into her hair in answer, not wanting to break this hug for anything or anyone. “Can I sleep here with you?” I smiled and pulled back, my hands on her shoulders. I couldn’t believe she wanted that and so did I. I looked at her face and she was smiling but her shyness was back, her cheeks flushed. When she looked at me, I nodded my head and stood up so she could lay on the sofa. She did just that and laid facing out, her hands clasped to her chest in embarrassment. I draped the duvet over her before climbing in and pulling her against my chest. I kissed her lightly on the forehead and stroked her hair. I heard her sigh heavily but eventually I heard deep breaths coming from my chest and smiled, closing my eyes and sighing happily.
