Chapter 16

Chapter 16 Michael's POV Rebecca was, dare I say, a better assistant than Jeanie. Sure, Jeanie was amazing at her job, but she was always still my dad’s assistant at heart. Rebecca was mine, knowing every little details about things I knew, pre-empting things before even I knew I needed them sometimes. I had promised myself I would never show my feelings for Rebecca but seeing her everyday was effecting me. Seeing her in the tight figure-hugging dresses, her hair off her neck or shaping her face. Smelling the fruity perfume, she always wore. I couldn’t concentrate. She only came into my office a few times a day, to bring me lunch and a few coffees as well as to bring me any paperwork I had requested, but those few times were enough to distract me. I groaned and shut my eyes. Maybe having her as my PA was a bad idea. I could hide the feelings when I only saw her now and again, her being close drove me insane but I also wanted her closer. I’d seen her eating lunch alone for the past few days and wanting more of her I wondered why she wasn’t going down to the canteen so today I decided she wasn’t going to do that. “Hey.” I said, trying to stick to my usual bored tone but finding it more and more difficult to not be friendly to her lately. “Oh, Hey Michael.” She smiled up at me from her computer. “What's up? Have I missed something?” She asked, furrowing her brow and checking her notepad, diary and computer in quick succession. I chuckled. “No youre good. I wondered if you wanted to grab lunch together. You’ve been eating alone the last few days.” I saw her furrow her brows, still looking at her computer screen. “You don’t have to do that.” She answered without looking up at me. “I know I don’t have to; I want to.” I looked at her, and she finally broke her gaze away from her screen and looked at me with her brows furrowed. I feel like we held each other’s gaze for a long time before she finally, just simply, nodded her head. She grabbed her handbag and stood next to me, she looked remarkably uncomfortable, and I wondered why but I headed out of the office, glancing at her to make sure she was next to me. We headed to the canteen, and I headed to the sandwich bench. I inwardly chuckled at everyone’s reactions, including Rebecca's. It wasn’t usual for me to eat here, often ordering ahead of time and Jeanie or Rebecca picking up my food or I would bring food from home. Everyone knew I was “strange” when it came to some of my quirks. I was raised a perfectionist by my father and never stepped a toe out of line, so it was only natural I liked things a certain way. I think that was part of the reason father never pushed me to accept the marriage to Kira, because I had never gone against him before, so he knew this meant a lot to me. I smiled at the lady behind the counter who had taken my order this morning and handed me over my food as well as the food I had ordered Rebecca. I nodded my head over to an empty table and Rebecca looked at me with her mouth slightly open and headed that way. I put our food down on the table and handed her a sandwich of salad with egg and salad cream, her favourite and an apple already sliced and a bottle of peach flavoured water. “Ho…” She began but didn’t finish before opening her bottle of water and taking a drink. “Whats wrong?” I asked, furrowing my brows, had I gotten things wrong? I knew she loved apples the most and always strived to eat at least one piece of fruit with lunch, her argument was always that she needed to eat fruit at lunch of she wouldn’t eat a single piece of fruit or veg all day. Her favourite sandwich was egg salad, but she didn’t eat it often as she said people thought it smelt awful and her favourite type of drink was peach, peach everything actually. Her perfume always smelled of peaches as did her clothes and her flat. “Absolutely nothing, thanks for this.” She said, smiling. She ate her lunch and we chatted about a few work things before hearing a piercing shrill shriek from across the canteen. “OMG Micheal, What are you doing eating here?” I didn’t need to look up to know it was Kira. “And where have you been Rebecca? I missed you!” Now it all made sense, she had been avoiding Kira. I raised an eyebrow at Rebecca, and she looked guiltily at me and shrugged. “Rebecca has been extremely busy, learning her job through and through Kira. How about you?” I asked her coldly, still angry that in nearly two weeks she had yet to produce any work. I wasn’t her boss, but it still bothered me. Chris and I hadn’t spoken much this week, but he had complained a few times about her still making excuses. “Yeah, I’m getting there, I just need a spark of inspiration. So, Rebecca, how are you enjoying the job?” Rebecca answered politely and looked extremely annoyed. “Have you spoken to you know who about you know what?” Kira said, raising her eyebrows. “Because if not then I can help like I said.” Rebecca was glaring at Kira now and I could almost hear her teeth grinding. “Wait, Rebecca, what time is it? Don’t we have that shipping order to finish?” I said, standing up and grabbing my food. She looked confused then seemed to get what I was saying and grabbed her stuff too. “See you later Kira.” She was just pouting but waved goodbye to us. It wasn’t until we were back in the office that I heard Rebecca let out a long breath. “Well now you know why Ive been avoiding the cafeteria.” She said, a guilty grin on her face. I nodded but looked at her concerned. “Is everything ok?” I asked her. “Yeah, it’s nothing, honestly. She saw one of my designs when I was showing Janine and wanted me to pitch it to either you or Chris, but I said I wouldn’t and closed it down. She’s been nagging me since to see it and show you both, that’s all.” I looked at her and nodded ok. I think there was a lot more to it, but she was entitled to keep her feelings to herself. “Are you out with Chris tonight?” I asked, wondering if their usual Friday night gossip session was on. “He hasn’t said, even though he said they would never change. Hes been avoiding me all week except for the general catch up on the phone or by text.” She sighed heavily and sat at her desk, finishing her sandwich. I saw some of my habits had rubbed off on her as she had set a napkin out over her keyboard and mouse and was eating over it. I also noticed baby wipes and hand sanitizer on her desk and couldn’t help but smile. “Want to gossip to me?” She looked up at me confused. “Look, I know how hard it must be, losing Chris to… Kira.” I bit my lip from calling her the names I usually would. “So, I’m here too, I’ve always been your friend too Becks.” She frowned and looked at me, then her face softened. “Ok yeah, usual place, usual time?” I nodded and headed back to work. I didn’t have any nefarious plans to win her over, but I could see how much she was missing Chris. I wanted to help her feel better.
