Chapter 17
Rebeccas POV
Why had I agreed to this? Sure, I’d been alone with Michael a bunch, especially lately, and he was right, we were friends, but I wanted to talk to Chris. I needed that gossipy, judgemental friend back. I also felt weird around Michael recently. I wondered if my realization over finally losing Chris to Kira was making me look at Michael as his replacement. Aside from their eyes they looked the same, but I didn’t want to do such a stupid thing because of their looks. I loved Chris, right? I shook my head, remembering my pact to get over him, but I never wanted to use Michael as a rebound. I cared about him.
I’d been working for Michael two weeks now and nothing significant had happened. However, he did seem more friendly that I’d ever remembered, or did he? Maybe that was just down to my stupidity of being too clingy to Chris to notice that me and Michael were closer friends than I realised. However, there were little things all week. Chris was either too busy or his PA answered every time I called, and the few texts and calls he had made were vague and official. Kira had been actively seeking me out all week too, wanting to chat and pretend to be best friends. It annoyed me and I wondered if Chris was secretly trying to get us to be friends like I offered. Then Michael had been sweet all week, instead of being his usual moody self, he was smiling at me. He was ordering double coffee, one for me too, something he never did for Jeanie. He said I deserved it as I was actually more efficient than Jeanie, but that made me feel worse. She’d been his assistant for years and his fathers before. He’d also ordered my perfect lunch today without me even asking.
Double the above with the weird feelings I’d had the past two weeks, since the whispering incident. Id begun looking at Michael in a completely new light, my heart beating faster when he smiled at me. His eyes seemed to bore into me, deeper than I had noticed before. His eyes had always shown his emotions even when his outside demeanour didn’t match. His grey eyes seemed like a swirling storm when he was mad, or a sweeping fog cloud when he wasn’t listening. However, this week they had seemed like smoke, swirling around me, a little intoxicating. His cologne smelled nice but mixed with the occasional cigarette too. Now this… I was actually going to gossip with him instead of Chris. Argh!
I got dressed into my usual figure-hugging black jeans and found a nice flowy off the shoulder top I had, it was green to bring out the colour of my eyes. I left my hair loose, and only applied a small amount of eyeliner and lip gloss. I aimed to get drunk tonight, and part of me wondered what it would be like to get Michael drunk. I don’t think I had ever seen him drunk in all the years we could legally drink. I grabbed my over shoulder green purse and headed out to our usual pub.
Chris’s POV
I couldn’t keep avoiding Rebecca. Id tried all week, and it was hurting like crazy to not talk to her. The only saving grace to the week was that Kira and I had actually started acting like a real couple and Kira was weirdly enjoying it, despite her not wanting this relationship either to start with. We had cuddled watching films, we had shared a bed and we had even slept together a few more times. The first time had been weird as I was seeing Kira and not Rebecca this time, but it had become enjoyable the more we had done it. I didn’t love this woman, but I could see us being happy together.
I took my phone out of my pocket. Id stayed over at work in the hope of seeing Rebecca, but she had left early today. Michael was still here though so I called his office.
“Yes?” his usual thick drawl answered.
“What’re you doing?” I asked, curious as to why he was still here. I heard the sigh and knew he was rolling my eyes at me.
“I’m playing computer games…” He answered.
“Ouch, sassy!” I laughed, he had been in a good mood the last few days and I wasn’t sure why. “Want to grab a drink?” There was a pause which caught me by surprise.
“I’m actually busy tonight.” When he didn’t elaborate, I pushed for more information.
“Doing?” a sigh.
“Taking Rebecca for drinks.”
“What?” I blurted out, not thinking.
“Well, someone has been avoiding her all week and she’s been harassed by his future wife and is a little stressed. She needed a friend tonight and her best friend wasn’t available.” He answered, calmly and bluntly. At this, the anger that was rising up started to ebb away. He was right. Before anything else Rebecca was my best friend. Id been keeping away to avid hurting myself without even thinking about the consequences for her. And Kira was harassing her?
“Tell me everything.” I answered, angrily.
Rebeccas POV
I saw Michael sat at our usual table, it was close to the dance floor but away to the side enough that people wouldn’t bother us near the bar or by the toilets. I knew he picked this one for those reasons. I waved and headed over noticing my usual drink on the table. Accompanied by another one. I raised my eyebrows at him.
“Erm, Friday celebrations?” He answered, nonchalantly, shrugging his shoulders.
“Well don’t be getting my too drunk. My boss is a little sour and might fire me if I come in on Monday still hungover.” I thought I saw him smile a little and chuckled picking up the clear drink and giving it a sniff. Peach hit my nose and I smiled. Archers and lemonade. My old college drink. It was my favourite, but it got me drunk quite fast. “Thanks!” I said to him. I put my jacket on the coat hanger behind us then sat down and began drinking it slowly.
“You, ok?” He asked.
“Yeah, why?”
“You seem tense.” I smiled at him. He knew exactly what I was feeling.
“I won’t be with a few drinks, a good dance.” He raised his eyebrows. “Yes, you are dancing. Oh! and good company.” The corner of his mouth twitched, and I knew he was supressing a smile. “Why do you do that?” I asked, genuinely curious.
“Do what?” He asked, taking a sip of his, what I assumed was, whisky.
“Stop yourself from smiling, stop yourself from acting anything really.” I asked, now drinking my cherry drink. He looked at me thoughtfully.
“Habit more than anything, but you draw more than most out of me.” He coughed. “You and Chris that is.” I smiled, that was true, he was almost normal around Chris, unless he was at work or around important people. And I had noticed more this week that he was more normal around me than usual. I thought back to our college years, and he was right, I could remember snippets of him laughing with both of us. His casually speaking to me and not being uptight. “My father drilled into my how perfect I needed to be. He tried with Chris too, but he never listened and was a little wild as a kid… well you know.” He smiled, a little sadly this time. I looked at his face and noticed he was deep in thought before he suddenly turned to look at me. “So, you want to dance? I think we both need it.” Before I could answer, he got up and for the first time ever, offered me his hand.
