Chapter 49

Rebecca’s POV

“So… what do you guys think?” Michael asked Janine and Chris as we all sat down at the dining table, finishing off the bits of Chinese we hadn’t touched yet. Janine was munching on a spring roll and Chris had stopped eating.

“Honestly?” Chris asked and Michael nodded. “I wouldn’t put it past him…” He let out a huge sigh.

“Why?” Michael asked, his brows meeting in the middle of his forehead. He was clearly having a hard time with the idea due to the respect he had for his father.

“When I agreed to date Kira, he basically gave me permission to cheat on her.”

“What?!” I burst in. “You’re kidding?”

“Nope… He said he understood what a marriage of business was like and heavily implied that it was only a marriage, and I could date on the side. I refused obviously. Even if Kira and I never fell in love I wouldn’t have done that to her.” Chris said, glancing at Janine every few seconds and I had to stop myself from clapping and getting excited. He was clearly realising how awesome she was and the “I’d never do that” was aimed at her. Janine was clearly trying to make herself as small as possible, like she wasn’t part of the conversation.

“I just… I can’t believe he would say that…” Michael had said, his face hard but I could read his hurt emotions in his eyes.

“What do you think Janine?” I asked, making sure she knew she was as important here as anyone else.

“Well… I don’t know anything about your family… but this Oliver looks incredibly like you two. You don’t find specimens like you often.” Then she started to go red and looked at the table before carrying on. “I worked here before your father left and he looks just like you guys too. Your genes are incredibly strong, and I said to Rebecca when we first found it that I thought he was related. The other stuff I can’t comment on though.” She said everything in one fast breath. I saw Chris watching her and I knew he liked her. Id seen that look with me before and with Kira.

“The fact is, I wouldn’t put it past him… Him and mum are extremely close but let’s be honest Michael. Can you honestly say they are madly in love and that dad wouldn’t cheat on mum. Especially with someone like Jeanie who he was around for 12-hour days, 6 days a week sometimes.” I saw Michael’s eyes cloud over with a swirl of emotions. There was anger, sadness but also a determination.

“Ok so we need to look into him.” Michael said, his tone clipped. He was staring at Chris.

“I have an idea…” I said, hoping I wasn’t overstepping. Everyone looked at me and I took a deep breath. “How about we hire someone to infiltrate the Leaf Industries and find out who he is and also who is threatening you.” Everyone stared at me, and I ploughed on. “Yes, I know that makes us as bad as them and it could be an issue if were found out, but Michael told me that the design industry as ruthless and if I was going to make it, I needed to be harsher…” I stopped when I saw Janine and Chris looking at each other. Janine had a look on her face that said, ‘I told you so’ and I was confused. Then without warning Janine started laughing and was followed closely by Chris and Michael.

Michael’s POV

We absolutely should have known. Rebecca wasn’t one to stand up for anyone, but when it came to me and Chris, she was fierce. She never held back her temper around us or her attitude. Now she knew we were being threatened and also now we knew Kira was pregnant, she had gone into her protective phase. Even though we didn’t think she would do something like this normally, it was completely reasonable to her because she was protecting her boys.

“Why is everyone laughing?” She questioned.

“Who’s telling her?” I said, getting up and heading round the table to pull her into a hug. I saw Chris looking at Janine.

“I’m not, this was your idea and I told you we should tell her.” She said, crossing her arms. I couldn’t tell if she was genuinely angry at him for keeping Rebeca out of the loop or if she was teasing him. I sat down in Rebecca’s chair and pulled her into my lap. She didn’t argue but ept looking at us all confused. I heard Chris sigh.

“Fine… WE are already putting a mole into the Leaf cmapny. A woman who used to work for me. Her name is Kirsty. We still haven’t heard anything but shes knows the plan and has applied for one of the open positions since people have been leaving the company because of Kira’s incident.” I saw Rebeccas face turn from confusion to realisation the finally to annoyance. However, she wasn’t annoyed at Chris, she turned to me.

“You knew?” She asked.

“Wait? What? I’m the one who gets your anger. It was Chris’s idea. I said I wanted to tell you. He refused.” She still looked at me, annoyance in her face before leaning down to whisper to me.

“You’re dead later…” And I knew she didn’t mean literally. Oh, tonight was going to be a long night. “As for you two… please don’t keep any more secrets from me. After what happened with Kira I would much rather us all be honest.” I saw them both nod.

“Ok so here’s the plan…” Chris went into full explanations about what we were investigating, but now it included looking into Oliver too. Rebecca shared all of the information she had found on him, and I planned to talk to Jeanie as soon as possible. By the time we had finished discussing everything it was nearly midnight.

“Woah! Its late! You guys should absolutely stay over here?” Rebecca questioned. Looking at me for confirmation. I didn’t have an issue with Chris, but I didn’t know how we would work this out. Janine had become a fast friend over the past few months, and she seemed trustworthy. I sighed.

“Chris can have the sofa and Janine the spare room. If that’s ok?” I said and Rebecca smiled brightly at me. I saw Janine struggling for words. “Or I can get anyone a taxi if they prefer. I have clothes for Chris and I’m sure Rebecca has things here you can borrow Janine.”

“Oh… erm are you sure? It is late but…” Janine bit her lip and I saw Chris looking at her.

“I’m fine with the sofa, makes a change for it being me on there instead of Rebecca.” He laughed. Rebecca just raised her eyebrow at him then yawned loudly.

“Come on Janine, lets go find clothes for you to wear tonight and tomorrow.” I watched Chris as he stared after the girls.

“You like Janine?” I asked, cutting straight to the point. He looked at me with alarm in his eyes.

“What? No…” He didn’t sound convincing.

“Oh, come on. Its obvious. You look at her with the same longing you looked at Rebecca when you couldn’t have her. I’m not saying you love her, but you defiantly fancy her, right?” He sucked his bottom lip into his mouth then sighed.

“Yeah ok, when she went over to work for you, I missed her. Then the past few weeks she ahs been so close to me, and Ive noticed so much about her. Shes adorable but also a bit of a firecracker. Shes not scared to tell me I’m an i***t or tell me what she thinks. But after Rebecca and Kira I’m worried about liking someone else. Especially with Kira being pregnant.”

“You think shes actually pregnant?” I asked and he nodded.

“I do but I will speak to her about it once it’s all straight in my head.” I nodded.

“Have you told Janine?” He shook his head and sighed loudly.

“See, issues.”

“You don’t know how she feels about things unless you talk to her. Don’t make the same mistakes with Janine as you did with Kira and Rebecca.”

Rebecca’s POV

“So…” I asked as Janine was putting some of my pyjamas on. They were a silver pair of trousers with a strap top. They had red roses printed down the side and they suited her.

“So what?” She asked as she folder her clothes from today.

“You and Chris?” I said, wiggling my eyebrows. She laughed.

“What about us?” She said, playing it cool.

“Oh, come on, you could cut the s****l tension with a knife.” She started going red.

“Really?” She asked, genuinely shocked.

“Absolutely. He defiantly likes you and I’m pretty sure you like him too… right?” I said, sitting down on the bed as she looked through the pile of work clothes, I had dug out for her to look through. She knelt on the floor, looking through the clothes, not answering. “Janine?” She sighed and I saw tears in her eyes.

“I do… but what about you? And Kira?” I was taken aback.

“What? I’m not interested in Chris. I was extremely confused.” I explained everything to her. “And as for Kira, he will never trust her again after hat she did. Chris might be a puppy dog, but he won’t take crap from people. That’s how he managed to stay at the top of the company even without Michael’s input.” She bit her lip, and I knew she was thinking about everything.

“Look, I spent way too long harbouring feelings that were wrong. If I had just spoken to Chris about my feelings, I would have realised a heck of a lot sooner that it was Michael I had feelings form, not Chris. If Chris had spoken to me sooner, then he wouldn’t have had problems with Kira… although I think they would have happened regardless.” Janine nodded.

“I think so too, I think she wants to hurt Chris for reasons that aren’t just about you.” I agreed and tutted.

“Just see how it goes?” I asked and she sighed. “Janine, Chris is amazing, and I really like you. Michael does too. You have done so much for us, let us do stuff for you too. Just see how he feels too?” She nodded and held up a dress. It wasn’t her usual style, but it would suit her. “Perfect! I have new underwear that I haven’t wore yet, don’t think you should go commando to work if Chris likes you.” I chuckled and I aw her go red again. I laughed as I put away my other clothes.
