Chapter 24
Rebecca's POV
I’d had my dress already steamed and delivered to Michaels so all I had to take were my jewellery and shoes. I was also taking a bottle of red wine for Michael as I knew he would probably have a bottle for me. I was getting my things ready before I showered, when I heard a knock at the door. Confused I headed over to find Michael stood at my door. Really? I opened the door, frowning at him, he looked worried.
“Are you serious?” I laughed, leaving the door open for him to come in.
“What?” he growled.
“I didn’t need picking up Michael. We still have 2 hours before I even need to be at yours and I haven’t even showered yet.” He didn’t say anything but was smiling at me. A small, sweet smile. Now I knew how he felt about me I had realised what one of the looks in his eyes were. His grey eyes would lighten up a little and he would have a small smile on his face. I had seen it before but only briefly. I knew he was looking at me with love.
“I know you’re capable. I came to pick you up, so you didn’t have to carry all your stuff to mine. I also assumed you would be showering at mine but if you want to shower here first, I’m ok with that.” He sat down in one of my chairs and took out his phone.
“I will if that’s ok, only because all of my stuff is here.” I saw him want to say something, but he stopped himself. He looked worried still and I wasn’t sure why.
“Ok, no problem. I’ll keep myself busy.” Shrugging, I hopped in the shower and shaved and scrubbed until my skin was raw. I put on my favourite underwear. I knew no one would be seeing them tonight so I wanted comfort over style. They were just a pink pair with no lace. I grabbed my robe, remembering I had left my leggings and strap top in the living room. I opened the door and saw Michael still sitting in the chair.
“Ok I left my clothes in here; I still need to brush my teeth and dry my hair though.” I walked in and grabbed my clothes and saw him emailing Chris with a picture of my dolphin design. My breath caught in my throat. Oh god, had I been picked? I smiled brightly and grabbed my clothes. He turned off his phone and turned to look at me and must have seen my smile.
“You, ok?” He asked and I couldn’t help but launch myself at him.
“More than ok!” I hugged him and I felt him get warm. I pulled myself off quickly, forgetting what I was doing. When I pulled away, he was red, but he recovered quickly. He stood up and mumbled something about getting some air. I laughed. “Sorry!” I shouted after him as he walked not my balcony. I headed to get dressed.
Michael's POV
Was tonight a bad idea? I had bad feelings, Chris was telling me I was an i***t but that design, the dolphin one, I knew it was Rebecca's design, but Kira had sent it in. Janine had said she also had a bad feeling about Kira but not just with that design. Kira had been spending too much time in Chris’s office, even when he wasn’t in there. I wondered if she was overreacting. Kira was always acting strange and lurky. The fruit one too didn’t seem her style either. She was very crass and over the top in her design, always opting for bold colours like red and yellow, I don’t think she knew what pastels were.
However, Chris had been so excited over them and wouldn’t listen to reason when it came to Kira. It felt like he had literally thrown his whole being into her to make up for his crush on Rebecca. Even though I had never seen Rebecca's designs the dolphin one stirred up memories in me, of our cruise holiday. Rebecca loved Dolphins. She had been so excited she couldn’t wait to get in the water and jumped in instead of entering slowly. She had scared them all away but that evening after being calmed down, mostly by Chris, she had told me how beautiful it looked. The way she described it whilst we were looking out over the dark water, her eyes shining with excitement was exactly like this picture. She also loved pastels. I sighed, emailing Chris once again to pull Kira’s design but he refused even though it was my department.
The main reason I had invited Rebecca as my plus one tonight was that if my hunch was right, then I had the feeling I would need to damage control, mostly for Rebecca as I knew Chris would side with Kira. He claimed he had loved Rebecca, but it was blatantly clear most of what he had felt all these years was lust. He didn’t recognise or even remember the dolphin saga.
I was stood on the balcony, having taken one of the cigarettes Rebecca stashed for me. And I was so deep in thought that I hadn’t heard her come out to join me. She had gotten dressed into plain black leggings and a strap top but was currently bare footed and her hair was still dripping wet. She looked at me and signalled for a drag. I didn’t give it her and she frowned.
“You, ok?” I asked, looking her up and down.
“Yes, why?” She asked, looking at me confused.
“You only smoke when youre stressed or annoyed.” I answered, nonchalantly.
“Yeah, well you too… so why are you smoking?” I knew why but I couldn’t tell her why. Especially if I was right. We needed proof.
“I have a few reasons, but there a secret.” I said, turning away from her. Before I could react, her arms were around my waist, and she was hugging me from behind.
“Tonight, will run smoothly, it’ll be amazing. No matter who you’ve chosen, everyone will be happy for them, and you’ll be proud to call them part of our company. And I’m sorry for hugging you with my hair wet.” I threw my cigarette in the ash tray she had put outside and grabbed her arms off of me. Turning to her I put her arms back on my waist as I faced her.
“How?”
“How did I know all that? Ive spent just as many years getting to know you as you have me, boss.” She chuckled and poked my nose, ready to pull away from me. My eyes darkened at her calling me boss, it was so sexy and her poking my nose aggravated me just enough to want to grab her and kiss her. “Like, how you hate that, but I absolutely am allowed to do it as the rules apparently don’t apply to me. Like, how when you’re stressed, you smoke. Like, how your brows nearly touch when youre confused, yep, like that. Like, how you tilt your head slightly when youre intrigued.” I was flabbergasted. Sure, she knew me, but she had been paying that much attention? Then it made sense. The headache on her first day and her confidently telling me not to drink coffee. I honestly thought she was just being bold on her first day, but she had done things like that before. Asking me if I was sad because I wasn’t getting a kiss. Even though she thought I was Chris, she had clearly still been able to read my emotions. Somewhere deep in her subconscious she knew it was me, I was sure of it.
“Becks… I’m sorry!” I said, not knowing why I was sorry but needing to say the words. She didn’t answer and just smiled at me. I couldn’t hold back anymore and pulled her towards me, kissing her deeply.
