Chapter 22
Michael's POV
The end of the day came to a close. I knew Rebecca had spoken to Chris. He called me straight after and told me everything. So, she was confused about how she felt about me. This gave my heart a little hope that the memory had returned to her. After I walked her home, I was ready to call Chris and tell him I would marry Kira and he could have her. Just to keep her in my life. Even though I’d never had Rebecca the fear of losing her was too great. But then she had messaged me. The text was almost word for word what she had said that night. My phone rang again as I was finishing up for the day.
“Hello?”
“Hey Michael, its Kira. I wondered if you’d take a look at something for me. I know youre the one in charge of the accessories that the company is bringing out this year and I have a design Id like you to look at.”
“Can’t you go to Chris?” I asked, annoyed. I really didn’t want to work with her and even though that was my department, she was hired under Chris.
“Yeah, I could but he hired me for jewellery design and whilst it’s fun it really isn’t my thing. So, I’m coming to you.”
“Send me them through and I’ll have a look, Kira.” I snapped and hung up the phone before she could say anything else.
I tidied up my desk and grabbed my coat and bag. I noticed Rebecca was finished for the day too and was clearly waiting for me. She was fussing around the office with various little things that didn’t need doing, stalling for time. When she saw me, she smiled brightly but then it turned into a half smile and her eyes looked sad. She grabbed her coat and bag from the coat stand near the door and held them in her hands. She wasn’t saying anything, and I frowned.
“Becks, you can talk to me!” She shook her head and smiled. It was the that I realised there were tears in her eyes. She was probably not speaking because she was scared the tears would spill out. Instead of us leaving I dragged her into my office instead and pulled her in for a hug. Within seconds she was weeping into my jacket. “Why are you crying?” She was sniffling hard and could barely answer me.
“I…I... don’t want…to… lose… you or…annoy… you.” Was her answer. I couldn’t help but snort.
“Becks, you’ve been annoying me for over 20 years. I haven’t gone anywhere yet.” She laughed through her tears and then gently slapped my arm. I let go of her and headed to the small sofa that I kept in my office for casual meetings and motioned for her to join me. She did, still sobbing gently. “Talk to me.”
Rebecca's POV
“Well…” I was starting to calm down now. I don’t know why the tears wouldn’t stop. It wasn’t just the fact I could lose Michael over this; it was the fact I had my best friend back. It was the fact that I had realised my feelings for Chris had gotten stronger over a memory that didn’t happen. It was the fact I was second guessing everything. It was the fact that I didn’t know my own emotions. I also felt bad, I had developed feelings for Michael over the past fortnight, just two weeks and I wasn’t sure if they were because of Chris or genuine for Michael. I was also worried they were just lust from not dating for so long.
“My head is completely messed up. I care about you and Chris and don’t want to lose either of you. I feel awful that I didn’t know it was you that evening. I feel like I have messed everything up, especially by takin this job.” I looked at Michael whose face was unreadable, but his eyes showed deep thought. The grey eyes were dark and unmoving. I heard him take a deep breath.
“Rebecca, I have no intentions of ever moving on my feelings. I understand you love Chris and even if you are taking a step back or are confused, you’ve always felt love for him. I have never been under an illusion that you know I had told you those things or kissed you, I was never under the illusion you would randomly fall in love with me, and I was never under the illusion you would suddenly change your heart for me.” I tried to interrupt him, but he put his finger over my lips and looked deep into my eyes. My heart skipped a beat again. “However, if you figure out your heart and change your mind then the ball is in your court. You will NEVER lose me, regardless. I might not be Chris, being a partier, or a little crazy or sociable but ive always been with you and always will be.” He moved his finger and smiled slightly.
“Thank you” was all I could say. I didn’t know what else to say.
“Now, let’s go get food.”
Chris’s POV
I saw Rebecca and Michael leaving the office and smiled. Michael had loved her for years and although Rebecca might not realise it, she cared deeply for him. She always went to Michael when she wanted protection. He was always the one she sought out when she needed care and attention. He was always the one who could chill her out when she was angry. I don’t think she realised how close to both of us she was because she was so focused on her feelings for me. Whilst I couldn’t deny that there was a lust deep within me for her. I knew now that I didn’t love her as more than a sister or best friend. I smiled sadly and got ready to end the day when I received an email from Kira.
I was in awe at what she had sent me. The email was meant for Michael but had me copied into it. They were designs for Michael's new line of handbags, scarves and hair accessories. They were stunning. Now I understood why she hadn’t been designing any jewellery with Janine. One of the designs was just a basic print of fruits. The fruits were sparkling and realistic. The background was a pastel peach that allowed the bright colours of the fruit to shine through. I couldn’t believe she had designed them. I quickly text Michael before setting off home to Kira who had been at her fathers all day.
