Chapter 23

Chapter 23 Rebeccas POV Two months of normal life, normal work and just… normalness. I’d never been so happy for the mundane. Chris had gone back to annoying me regularly at work and out of it. We’d only been out together twice for casual drinks, but it was nice and just like before I got this job. His and Kira's relationship seemed to be developing really well and I genuinely thought Chris was falling for her. He was getting very protective over her and had started gushing to me about her over the phone. Kira had also started being friendly. Not the overbearing, obvious, friendly. Genuinely friendly. We had spent a few lunches together and she had genuinely started encouraging me to submit my designs to Chris. Michael had been keeping to himself more and more, but he was doing sweet things behind the scenes. I had noticed that he had actually been doing these things for years. Bringing me water when he heard me cough. Casually dropping paracetamols on my desk when he thought I had a headache or period pains. That one confused me as he was perfectly on time every month. We had started eating lunch together though, mostly in his office, but we would go out for dinner sometimes too followed by a few drinks and a chat. He was his usual stoic, hard self otherwise though. It was nice that everything seemed back to how it used to be, without the crush on Chris. I realised that it had took up way more of my attention than it deserved and I hadn’t noticed anything or anyone else. I had also developed a friendship with Kira’s workmate, Janine, because of this. She was really sweet and kind and also extremely pretty. She had shoulder length, mousy brown hair and deep brown eyes. She was short and small in every way, even her nose was button cute. I had gotten to know her best and relaised that aside from designing jewellery, she painted and loved to read. We shared stories of Kira and how annoying she was mostly and had been for a few drinks together after work. IT was nice to have a female friend that I could talk to. “She is a nightmare for Chris” She giggled quietly to me as we walked from the printer room. Michael had sent me down to grab some design ideas hed been sent by people. “She’s always in his office and I swear hes aged a few years in the last two months.” I laughed out loud. “That’s hilarious. He does really care about her though.” I smiled, happy for them. I began flicking through the designs and saw one of my designs there, the dolphin one. I smiled, Chris had clearly gotten my message and forwarded it to Michael. However, what concerned me was the fact that one of my other designs had made it into the pile. I shrugged, wondering if I had accidentally attached it to Chris. “That’s your design?” Janine asked, looking at the dolphin one. “Yeah! It draws from when the bosses and I went on holiday when we were teenagers.” I told her the story and she laughed. “What confuses me is this is also mine, but I don’t remember sending it to Chris.” I said, showing her the pastel fruit design. Janine's face looked concerned, but she didn’t say anything. We got to the main entrance and had to split up, her going to Chris’s side of the building and mine to Michaels. I waved goodbye and headed up to my office. I knocked on Michael’s door. “Yes?” He answered, sounding more bored than usual. When I entered the room, I understood why. Sat on the corner of his desk, which was a huge no for him, was Kira. He was staring his computer down, pretending to work but I could clearly see he was just staring at the same spot over and over. “Oh, Rebecca! Are those the new designs?” She turned to Michael. “I can’t wait for you to look at them. See you later! Bye Rebecca.” I said goodbye then looked at Michael with a confused look. He waved me over. “She’s sent in a design; I hate to admit it but it’s really good.” “Ooooh, can I see it?” He looked at me with a hard look on his face and began to answer no. “I know, I know. Secrecy until the reveal.” I smiled, pretending to lock my lips closed. It was a yearly event. They would pick around 5 designers from the company whose designs were the best and have a large event celebrating their achievements. Everyone was invited and it was a fun evening that we could all dress up for and drink champagne, even if we didn’t win. Because I wasn’t a designer I didn’t actually know if I could be part of it but my designs being in there clearly meant they were considering it. I was annoyed though that Chris hadn’t told me he’d picked me. Maybe he had wanted it to be a surprise? But I was still confused as to how he had gotten hold of my fruit one. Michael's POV I was looking through the designs when I came across one that I was pretty sure I recognised, however it wasn’t by the person I expected it to be by. I frowned and put it to one side. Then I came across Kira’s design. It was pretty but there was something off about it. As I was looking through, my phone rang, and Chris was on the other line. “So, what do you think of her designs?” I rolled my eyes. The past few weeks, Chris had been throwing himself into his relationship with Kira. I still couldn’t stand her, but he genuinely seemed to be developing feelings for her. “They’re good, there’s just something off about them. I feel like I’ve seen them before. Especially the dolphin one…” “Oh?” He started moving papers around. “I know what you mean, they seem familiar, but I haven’t seen designs like this anywhere else.” “Well, I hate to say this, but I think Kira is one of our winners.” I heard Chris pumping the air with his fists and I assume Kira was with him. “I swear to god, Chris. If she’s there and you’re telling her I will personally throttle you.” “I’m not, I’m not!” He was saying but I could tell he as smiling and mouthing words. I rolled my eyes. We talked a few more minutes then, I hung up. She only had to keep her mouth shut for a few days. The party was this weekend. “Rebecca, can I see you in my office please?” I com-ed Becks and she walked in a few seconds later, papers in her hand. “Yes?” She asked and I motioned for her to sit down. She looked at me concerned and did so, piling her papers neatly on my desk. “So, as you know, the designers reveal is this weekend.” She nodded but didn’t say much. “So, I wondered if you…” I stuttered and for the first time in a while I could feel myself sweating. “Do you want to be my plus one?” She started to open her mouth. “I know you get an invite anyways and no pressure, I just wondered if you wanted to get ready at mine with pre drinks, and we could arrive together and keep each other company. No strings, no date and just friends.” She started laughing and I glared at her a little. “I’m sorry, I wasn’t questioning your intentions, Michael. I never have. Of course, I’ll come to yours to get ready etc. But it was funny seeing you stumble your words.” I smiled at her, and she smiled back before I returned to my normal work face. “Thanks Rebecca, that will be all.” She chuckled and grabbed her paperwork before heading out of the office. I knew she was enjoying my awkwardness over that. When I was putting away the entries for the competition I received an email from one of Chris’s workers. Janine. She had become extremely close to Rebecca and I wondered why she was messaging me. I opened the email and baulked.
