Chapter 44
Michael’s POV
I’d spent all morning figuring out who could have sent that email. I knew a few computer programmers who had a less than great reputation and would delve into hacking sometimes. Even they couldn’t trace the IP address or the sending email. I rubbed my temples again watching Rebecca and Janine who were huddled around Rebecca’s computer looking at something intently. I hoped it meant Rebecca was showing her the designs she had done. They were brilliant and I knew she would make a great addition to my accessory team. We had yet to talk about the formalities, but she knew I wouldn’t under pay her or overwork her. Despite the staff under me being sometimes scared of me, they knew I was fair.
My phone began to ring, and it was an unknown number again. Frowning, I couldn’t decide whether to answer it or not. Finally, I did.
“Hello?” I growled down my handset, my eyes fixed firmly on Rebecca to make sure she didn’t walk in to hear anything.
“Mr Reve?” I heard a timid, yet mature voice on the other end.
“Jeanie?” I answered and then re-checked the number. It definitely wasn’t her usual number.
“Yes, it’s me. I… I just wanted to check in on you after hearing the news about Kira.” I sighed.
“We’re fine, honest.” I answered, feeling calmer now I knew who was calling me.
“The company is… ok?” She asked, a stutter in her voice. I raised an eyebrow. One thing I knew about Jeanie is that nothing worried or scared her. She had worked for my father for 40 years and me for the remaining 5.
“Yes, we haven’t accumulated any losses so far and most companies are sympathetic and willing to wait for future releases to make up for our stolen ones.” I said, not sure why she needed to know this. I heard a sigh of relief.
“That’s good to hear. I worry about the Reve’s boys.” She said and something seemed off about her tone.
“Are you ok?” I asked her, concern twinging my brain.
“Yes… of course, why wouldn’t I be?” She said, taken aback.
“No reason. You sounded off. And this isn’t your usual mobile number.”
“Oh! I changed it after I left, somehow some clients ended up with my number, so I figured it better to change it, so they had to call the company directly.” That made sense, she had always accompanied me to any business meetings and to every gathering where I had to be nice to people. She was my voice when I got bored of schmoozing with rich idiots.
“Ah, I’ll save it then. Thanks for checking up on us.” I said, smiling, she had been an amazing assistant, always loyal to the company and extremely loyal to my father.
“No problem, How is Ms Harper doing?” She asked and again, I heard that stutter.
“Yeah, she’s great.” I answered, not really wanting to say anything else about her. She would already know about the engagement if my father had anything to say about it.
“Good, good! Well, I best be off. I’m glad everything is ok. Take care of yourself Michael.” She hung up before I could say bye. I knew instantly something was wrong though. Jeanie hadn’t called me Michael since before I left for university. She had always referred to me as Mr Reve once I turned 18. That was weird. Something else to add to the plate of investigations. I would ask father about her and everything as soon as I could. I glanced out at Rebecca and noticed that Janine had finally left to go back to work, and I smiled. I opened my sandwich and ate it down quickly before calling my father.
Rebecca’s POV
I had eventually sent Janine back to work. I had noticed Michael staring at us through the window. Although, he was on his personal mobile, he looked extremely concerned and he wasn’t hiding it very well. She had promised to do as much digging as she could and waved me goodbye.
I went back to designing. Michael had mentioned a designer position for me but had yet to talk properly about it with me and I wanted a good portfolio to bring along. I remembered I needed to change my password to something no one would know. I would tell it Michael and him alone. I thought long and hard when a memory came back to me.
It was Christmas time, when we were all around 17. The Reve’s always threw a large party between Christmas and boxing day. We were always invited to stay through boxing day until new year, so we always attended. This particular year I had decided I wanted to dress as fancy as some of the other girls that had attended. I always wore stupid childish party dresses and this year I wanted to be more grown up, knowing that I was turning 18 soon and also because I wanted to impress Chris. I had begged my parents to take me shopping with the Christmas money I had received but they said that even though I had gotten a fair bit it still want enough to buy a fancy gown and accessories and that they couldn’t afford it. I had cried, not truly hating them but being angry that my parents were poor.
Chris had found me and asked why I was crying. I told him, leaving out the reasons why I needed a party dress. He said he would go to his father and ask him for money and that he would take me shopping. He had learnt to drive in the last few months and recently gotten his licence before me or Michael. I had gotten so excited that I had flung myself into his arms and kissed his cheek. He told me to clean up and get dressed and he would be back after he spoke to his father. However, after I had showered and dressed to go out. I found a note on my bed that said there were 3 dresses to choose from in Mrs Reve’s bedroom and that I could have whichever one I wanted. Mrs Reve had laid out three beautiful dresses and the accompanying accessories for me to choose from. I had chosen a pretty, long and modest terracotta dress that made my hair stand out. There were green accessories and shoes to match and also a pair of silver earrings with daisies on them. I looked like a garden ornament, like on of the statues you would find with ivy wrapped around them and I felt beautiful. When I finally tried them on my mum and Mrs Reve came into the room gushing and a smiling Chris and Michael was stood behind them. It was one of the first times I had noticed Michael actually smiled for me too. I had danced at that ball like I was the prettiest girl there and I had danced with Chris and my father and even Mr Reve who had complimented the dress like he had never seen it before.
I changed the password to that and continued designing before realising it was nearly 5pm. Michael had been on the phone most of the afternoon and I knew they were important calls as they were on his personal phone, which meant it was probably his father. I gently rapped on the door and heard a “come in.”
“Its clocking off time Mr Reve.” I said professionally and he smiled.
“Yes, father I will tell her. Ok, talk to you soon.” Michael hung up and chuckled. “Father says there’s no need to be so formal and he says hi.” I smiled, happy that Mr Reve was still treating me the same despite me now being engaged to his son.
“I’ll text him a hi back. Everything ok?” I asked, concern in my voice and he knew it. He rubbed his temples again.
“Yes and no. Nothing to worry about right now, ill fill you in if anything comes of it, but much of the same.” I nodded, assuming he meant the threats from before. I walked over to him and pushed his chair back away from his desk and straddled him.
“How about I get rid of your headache for you?” I asked, putting my arms around his neck. I saw his eyes cloud with the usual darkness and now understood it to be lust. He hummed a low moan, looked at his computer, then back at me. “It is finishing time.” I knew he wanted to finish whatever was on his screen, but I wanted to distract him. He didn’t answer me and seemed torn between me and his duty. Suddenly though he got up, with me still straddling him and cupped my butt. I let out a little scream and giggle as he carried me towards the… storage cupboard. He laughed.
