Chapter 3
Rebecca’s POV
I was absolutely seething when I first entered the office and Michael’s calm nature was not helping. He made me angrier. He always handled everything with a calm and stoic face even when I could see his eyes harboured a storm. Today his eyes did look angry, and I knew he was as mad at Chris as I was.
He finished his little speech, and I must admit, the temptation at more money would definitely help me, plus I did know the twins extremely well. I knew the office layouts and I even knew a lot of the staff. However, working for Michael directly would absolutely test my patience, plus there was the fact that Kira was going to be here full time. I almost gagged at the thought that I would have to be nice to her and I would be technically under her.
“Kira will not ever step foot in this office.” I heard Michael say as if he could read my mind. I looked at him confused. “I’m not stupid Becks.” He said, using my old nickname from college. I crossed my arms.
“Stupid about what?” I growled. “She had not even crossed my mind.” I thought I saw him almost roll his eyes, but he didn’t.
“So…” He asked.
“Fine!”
“Oh, don’t sound too excited about the extra money…” He said and smiled which was a rarity from Michael. Usually, Chris and his mother were the only one’s who could elicit a smile from him. I had managed once or twice but it was usually when I was hungover, so I was never really sure. I got up to sit in the chair at his office table so I could talk business.
“Ok, I’ll do it but I want a contract. I don’t want this to bite me in the ass like this interview has. Chris promised…” I stopped talking. Michael didn’t need to hear me bad mouth his brother. “I want security.” Michael nodded and said he would draft a contract up with the amended wages and a few added bits for me to sign. I nodded. “So, when do I start?” I smiled at him.
Chris’s POV
I looked at my phone after Michael had shouted at me. Don’t get me wrong, in 26 years I had definitely heard Michael get angry, but it was a very rare thing to hear. He sure was mad. I wiped my hand down my face. What had Kira done now?
Kira was my fiancé, she was a very pretty woman with long flowing blonde hair, which she would wear mostly down and straight although it was naturally curly. She had lovely hazel eyes and was extremely tall. She was a few years younger than us at 24. She had been a model for a few years but was getting tired of that industry. Her father, Mr John Leaf, was a competing jewellery designer in our city and my father wanted us to join forces so had introduced us. She had been a family friend for a few years now and was a sweet natured girl. However, she did not like Rebecca, which could be my fault as we were inseparable so naturally, she was jealous.
When our parents suggested we got married it took a while for me to agree. I wanted to live a little, plus I really liked Rebecca, had for a while now. Father talked to me about this and whilst he loves Rebecca, he explained that sometimes in business we had to make decisions we didn’t like. I asked him if that’s what had happened with him, and mum and he frowned but never actually answered me. So, I met Kira a few times, we got on well and she was a smart girl, having studied science at school. I found out she actually wanted to become a biologist, working with perfumes but her father had told her it wouldn’t happen. We bonded over our shared misery and agreed to get married. We agreed that whilst we would be faithful to each other, we were only doing this for our family business. Myself, so I could run the business without our father interfering and her so I can be CEO of Leaf industries, leaving her to fulfil her dreams.
I frowned and sighed as I heard Kira enter my reception area, still shouting at poor Theo over what décor she wanted in her office and what she planned to do with her first full day. I would have to give Theo a raise if he continued being her assistant.
“Kira!” I shouted, knowing the only reason she was back up here was to see me.
“Yes sweetie!” I heard her voice shout through my office door, and she slowly strode in, her hips swinging sexily as she did.
“What happened this morning?” I furrowed my brows at her.
“What do you mean?” She looked at me innocently.
“With Rebecca?” I asked, raising an eyebrow.
“Oh, absolutely nothing. I saw her and let her know I had gotten the job. She was heading to see Michael anyway, so I assumed you’d already told her. She seemed ok and she left with Jeanie.” She shrugged her shoulders in ignorance.
“Well, I hadn’t told her, she’s a little… annoyed, she was heading to Michael because I asked him to head her off so we could talk to her.” I ran my hand over my face again and leant my head in one of my hands. “You don’t need to fight with her you know. She’s my best friend, nothing more.” With that Kira feigned shock.
“I wasn’t! She said, heading towards me and pushing me back so she could sit in my lap. “We agreed to be faithful no matter what and I trust you. I was just excited. I’m sorry!” She said, stroking my chest. I nodded but didn’t say anything else. “I’ll make it up to her!” She said, smiling. I nodded again and she smiled before kissing me.
Rebecca’s POV
I was back home and sulking on my bed. I had already received a congratulations text from my mother, and I didn’t want to call her and tell her what had happened, so I just sent her a message saying thank you. I was looking at my phone, at Chris’s number, wondering whether to call him. Would he pick up? I sighed and thought about Monday. Michael had offered me a contract which was sat on my kitchen counter. The salary he had offered me was very generous. He had said a few thousand, but I was on way higher than a normal PA and I knew he was being generous because of Chris. Was it only because of that though? Whilst I didn’t mind being Michales PA, I did know him well, it wasn’t what I wanted to do. Yes, Michael had said I can apply for internal positions while I’m there, his attitude though when he said he didn’t think I should. Didn’t he think I was good enough?
I sighed and before I knew it, I was calling Chris’ phone.
“Hello?” He answered, cautiously.
“Hi.” I said, letting out a breath I didn’t know I was holding.
“Youre talking to me? Already?” he said and did sound shocked. I did giggle at this.
“You know I can’t stay mad at you.” I sighed, angry with myself. “Why?” Was all I breathed out. He started ranting about his father and how it was his choice, he had fought for me to get the position, but his father kept pushing back.
“There will be more openings in mine or Michaels departments, and I promise you have first refusal in my department.” He said.
“Thanks Chris.” I sighed and turned onto my stomach. “Serious talk, Kira as a designer?” I asked and I heard him chuckle.
“Drinks later?” He asked and I knew that meant she was there.
“Absolutely.”
