Chapter 47
Michael’s POV
“What?” I asked, disbelief clouding my eyes and I saw how she looked at them, worry crossed her eyes and I tried to correct my face. She wouldn’t lie, there had to be an explanation. I had known Jeanie my entire life, she wouldn’t betray my father though. However, I didn’t need a repeat of a few months ago when she thought I had doubted her.
“I’m not lying Michael, please don’t…” She looked at me with the saddest eyes I had ever seen on her. “I don’t know for sure yet, but I might have been doing a little digging and found some things out.” She spread out some papers on the table and Chris picked them up.
“What the…” Chris said, his eyes wide, looking at Rebecca for answers. He passed the first page to me, and I looked at it in confusion. I saw the picture but after seeing Jeanie in the picture I looked at Rebecca for more information. She sighed and began explaining.
“So yeah, maybe I shouldn’t have done the digging without you guys but how much does he look like you? And he’s working with the Leaf’s and has been for a few years longer than you guys have run the company. And Jeanie is clearly friends with him, and Kira is…” Rebecca looked at us both, waiting for our reactions.
“I think we need to get a drink!” Chris said, sighing out loud, visibly confused. I nodded.
“Not at the bar though, we won’t be able to talk properly.” I answered and Chris also nodded. Then he looked confused and gasped.
“s**t!” Both Rebecca and I looked at him in shock. “I can’t, I’m supposed to be meeting… someone.” He broke off and turned a little red. I saw Rebecca holding back an excited face and chuckled quietly.
“Who?” She asked, her tone trying to be normal, but she was clearly speculating.
“Doesn’t matter…” Chris said, grumbling. “But I need to go. Maybe I can call after my… meeting and you can catch me up.”
“Absolutely, bring her along…” I answered, knowing perfectly well who he was meeting. Chris looked at me confused then laughed. He didn’t answer and left, waving goodbye to us. I looked at the photo and news articles and sighed. Suddenly I felt arms around my shoulders and smiled, feeling Rebecca put her weight onto them.
“Two questions, who is Chris meeting? And…What are you thinking?”
Chris’s POV
I ran out of the office and found Janine waiting for me. She could see I was out of breath and laughed.
“I thought you’d forgotten.” I panted and smiled.
“Absolutely not. This should be fun!” I answered. And turned to walk her towards the restaurant we were going to. My heart was pounding, and I don’t know why. After telling Janine the plan with Kirsty and her promising not to tell Rebecca she had decided to meet Kirsty tonight and I had asked if I could come along. However, walking by her side now, I felt like we were going on a date. Janine was happily chatting about happy memories of the pair of them from before Kirsty left. I glanced at her, noticing her mousy brown hair was longer and straighter than usual, it suited her. She generally wore it tied back or it was just messily brushed and frizzy. I also noticed that she had changed. The clothes she wore now were more casual and she held herself differently.
“Chris?” Janine said. I had been staring and not listening at all.
“Huh?” I answered and mentally slapped myself. “Sorry Janine… I just… well you seem different out of work.” I said, honestly.
“Oh…” I saw her go red and she stopped walking. “Well, I said, we’re here.” I sighed and held the door open for her and we headed in to meet Kirsty.
Rebecca’s POV
Michael and I had headed home after he refused to talk about anything else in the office, including not telling me who he was meeting. I had messaged Janine and she had cryptically told me she was meeting a friend and would see me at work tomorrow. Deep down I was hoping it was Chris, they seemed to get on well, had known each other years and Janine was sweet, something Chris needed to humble him a little but also comfort him after everything that had happened recently.
“What do you want to eat tonight?” Michael asked me and I honestly wanted Chinese food but wasn’t sure how Michael felt about ordering takeout food. He had never really eaten take out, opting to visit restaurants or café’s he had researched.
“Well…” I answered and bit my lip. “I actually really fancy Chinese food.”
“Ok, I can do that, let me know what you want.” I was surprised.
“Are you going to order?” He looked at my confused face and laughed.
“Absolutely, but probably not from where you would think.” I looked at him confused. “I don’t do takeaway food Rebecca. They might have good reviews and things but I...”
“I know, you like to have seen the kitchen and the food etc.” He nodded.
“So, there’s a restaurant that isn’t too far away who will deliver for me. They treat me well.” I clapped, excitedly. He ordered us a bunch of different dishes and I set the table.
“So…” I heard him chuckle.
“Rebecca…” Oh, full name… “I’m not telling you, if Chris wants you to know, he will tell you what hes up to. Hes never held anything back from you for long has he?” I pouted and he walked over to me and grabbed my chin, kissing my pout and causing me to laugh.
“Fine, ok well what about the other stuff.” I would get that information from Chris eventually, he was right, but I wanted it now. However, one thing I knew about Michael is that once he decided he was keeping something secret, he absolutely would. He led me to the sofa and sat down. I sat at the side of him and looked at him, questions flowing through my mind.
“Honestly, I trust Jeanie with my life Rebecca. Shes been a large part of my life and never betrayed my father. I’m not saying that she might have inadvertently said somethings to Kira, especially because she was engaged to Chris but nothing damaging.” I frowned.
“Ok, well what about this Oliver guy. He looks like you and Chris’s doppelganger.” At this Michael frowned. I could tell there was something he wasn’t telling me. He sighed heavily and turned to me.
“Yeah, you’re right, but aside from the looks, we have no idea who he is, and I don’t see how he could be relevant.” I bit my lip. “What?”
“Well… don’t take this the wrong way… but your parent’s marriage was arranged like Chris and Kira right…” I saw Michael’s jaw tighten. “Never mind, it’s a stupid idea.” I said, lowering my head and wondering what I was thinking. Mr and Mrs Reve had always been lovey dovey and happy together when I had seen them.
“No, it’s not.” Michael lifted my head to stare into my eyes. “They act in love, but they have had their issues… I just hate to think about it.” I looked into his eyes and saw sadness intertwined with love. I leant forward to kiss him, hoping to remove that sadness. He kissed me back with such urgency that I was worried I had brought up some bad memories.
