Chapter 10
Rebeccas POV
The next day arrived, and Jeanie came in for half the day just to make sure there wasn’t anything she had missed. I assured her there wasn’t, but she still gave me her number just in case there was anything I needed to ask. She was adamant not to bother Michael with anything and to go directly to her.
When it was time for her to leave, she went to say goodbye to Michael, stating she would see him at the usual Christmas gathering at his parents. He gave her a small gift and she actually started crying. I saw Michael tense up and couldn’t help but giggle at watching him not know how to react. She was ushered out of the room by him, and he looked at me a little helplessly. I went up to her and grabbed her things, helping her to her car.
I waved goodbye and looked at my watch, realising it was lunch time. I headed to the cafeteria, grabbing a salad and water and saw Janine sat at a table by herself. Thankful there was no Kira I went over.
“Mind if I join you?” I asked and she smiled brightly.
“Of course, Hi Rebecca!” She smiled, moving a notebook so I could sit down. “Enjoying yourself so far?” I nodded and ate my salad. Janine was scribbling away in a smaller notebook, and I looked over, curiously.
“Is that one of your designs?” I asked, seeing a drawing of a beautiful tear drop necklace with roses on the chain. She went red.
“Yeah, I used to design with my friend Kirsty, but she was the one who left. Kira hasn’t gotten the hang of the software yet, so Ive been designing alone. Do you like it?” I nodded genuinely.
“Its beautiful. I like flowers as accent pieces.” Janine smiled at me.
“You design?”
“Oh yeah, just something on the side, but that’s why I originally wanted Kiras job. Ill show you them sometime. I’d love to have another designer’s input. I’m not that confident in my style.” She agreed she would take a look next time we were together. I finished lunch and excused myself with the intention of calling via Chris’s office. When I arrived, I heard Kiras voice in the office.
“You’ve got to be kidding, you promised.”
“I didn’t promise anything Kira. I promised there was nothing going on. Not that I would stop spending time with my best friend. You wouldn’t expect me to stop seeing Michael.” I rolled my eyes, knowing she was jealous again. There was no need to be. I knocked on the door and Chris shouted for me to come in.
“Hey Chris, Hello Kira.” I said with a smile. I saw Kira strain to smile. “I hope you don’t mind; I overheard the conversation. Kira, there is nothing going on between me and Chris. He is engaged to you and cares deeply about you.” For a second, I thought I saw Kiras eyes soften but then she was immediately glaring at me before putting on her sickly-sweet voice.
“I just get so insecure. I’m sure Chris told you about our contract marriage, but I genuinely love him.” I saw Chris’s eyes go wide at this.
“He did, but even if there was no love between you. He is incredibly loyal and would never hurt you. Please stop worrying.” I gulped hard. “Maybe we can become friends?” I asked, trying to be sincere. I would befriend her for Chris, especially if it made things easier.
“Really?” Kira asked, genuinely surprised. I nodded. She smiled at this and although it didn’t quite reach her eyes it seemed to work. “Ok, well maybe ill see you at lunch tomorrow?” I nodded again and she excused herself, giving Chris a peck on the cheek. When she closed the door Chris sighed loudly.
“Thanks for that, rescuing me again from an awkward conversation.” I smiled.
“No problem. Is she still insecure about our friendship?” He nodded and sighed again. “I mean it you know. Ill suck it up and be her friend if it makes things easier for you.” He looked at me with a frown.
“Id like you to be actual friends you know.” I did know but I couldn’t bring myself to be her friend, she was a spoiled brat and her voice annoyed me. But I nodded at him, biting my lip to stop myself from saying anything horrible.
“We still on for tonight?” I asked, already knowing the answer.
“After that? I think id better not, not if you want to go out this weekend?” I looked at him with a frown as well.
“Yeah, fair enough. Usual time and place on Friday?” I asked.
“Absolutely, and don’t worry. Kira will never stop our Friday night outings at the bar. That’s for us.” I smiled brightly.
“And Michael.” I said, not knowing where that came from. But Chris chuckled.
“Obviously. He needs friends or hed never do anything.” I laughed.
Michaels POV
Rebecca came back from lunch early but there was an air of sadness about her. She did everything that afternoon as she normally would with a huge smile on her face but when she wasn’t working, I saw her tapping away on her personal tablet. I knew she designed when she was sad and knew she did it often even though she would never show us any of her designs. Both I and Chris knew she had talent from college, but she was too shy to share them with us once she finished college.
“Mr Reve.” She asked, poking her head through my half open door. I absent mindedly answered, not realising it was her. “What’re you up to Friday?” I looked up at her and she was a little red. Was it warm? No.
“Not a lot, why?”
“Will you be joining me and Chris at the bar?” I sighed. I tended to meet up with them once a month, not making it a regular Friday thing but the fact she was asking me made me want to be there.
“OK, sure.” I answered nonchalantly, looking back to my computer screen. She smiled as I looked at her out of the corner of my eye. She went back to her computer and put her tablet away, smiling.
