Chapter 42
Rebecca’s POV
I walked into the office Monday morning after spending an extremely relaxing time with my parents and Michael at the weekend. My mother had bought me and Michael an engagement gift of a weekend getaway in the holiday park near them which we accepted graciously, although we advised them it would be after the drama at work had been dealt with. We had also gone out for dinner with them Saturday evening before they left. Michael and my father had always got on, but they were laughing and joking like they had been best friends for a while. I loved it but I was also concerned over the drastic change in Michael. Had he really only ever been surly and angry because he couldn’t have me?
“Morning!” I smiled at the receptionist as I headed into the building. Michael had already headed out before me, and I promised to bring breakfast and coffee. She smiled at me but didn’t answer. I shrugged, heading to the canteen and grabbed our usual coffees as well as some pastries. I noticed a few people from Michaels department and smiled but they all seemed to avoid my gaze.
“Morning Rebecca!” I heard Janine call from the canteen entrance.
“Oh good, it’s not everyone who seems in a bad mood.” I laughed as I paid for my items.
“Oh… yeah…” She bit her lip and dragged me out of the canteen. “Just a warning, Michael is in a foul mood this morning… But no one knows why. I think because of association then everyone will avoid you too.” I rolled my eyes, great, at least I knew his attitude wasn’t just because of not having me.
“Ok, I’ll deal with it.” I sighed. “How’re you?” She walked with me towards the lobby, headed for our elevators up to our respective offices.
“Yeah, really good. Chris seems chipper now you and Michael are together, and he seems all in on hiring new people. I saw in his calendar that he has a meeting on Wednesday with a new designer so that’s something.”
“OH! That’s good news. He was a bit down last week but this weekend he seemed chipper. He has been texting someone none stop…” I looked at her for a reaction and I got one, just not the one I expected. I saw a hint of sadness and jealousy before she smiled.
“That’s good then. I hope he continues getting over Kira.” We arrived at the elevators, and I looked at Janine. It was obvious her and Chris got on well and that Janine definitely liked him. Then the way Chris had looked at her at the engagement party made me think he liked her too. They had worked together for a few years. “Right, I’ll maybe see you at lunch?” Janine asked, her smile a little too forced.
“Yeah definitely.” I answered, smiling at her as she waved bye and went up to her office. I let out a breath that I didn’t know I had been holding. Now I wanted to know who Chris had been texting all weekend.
Michael’s POV
I heard Rebecca enter the office and sighed heavily. I knew she would know immediately that there was something wrong. What did I tell her? I needed to talk to Chris but either he hadn’t received anything, or he wasn’t in yet.
“Morning Mr Reve!” She smiled happily, bringing in my morning coffee. I smiled, despite the morning I had had, I couldn’t help but appreciate her bright smile, the fact she was back but most of all, what she was wearing. She had on a crisp cream blouse and a pinstripe skirt that was just above her knees. Nothing spectacular, however I noticed certain things that I knew she had done especially for me. Her hair was tied into a high bun, and she had left her neck open. She knew I loved kissing her neck and I’m sure she had done it on purpose. Her shirt was tight enough for me to see all her curves too. The skirt was long but there was a slit that went pretty high up her thigh, and I saw it and raised my eyebrows. She smiled at me and raised her eyebrow too.
“Whats wrong boss?” She said and I bit my lip.
“You know exactly what you’ve done.” I stood up and grabbed the coffees from her before putting them on my desk then pulling her into me. This was exactly the distraction I needed. She smiled up at me.
“I have no idea, but you don’t seem to be in a bad mood like everyone is saying…” She smiled sweetly at me, and I frowned.
“Yeah, I was, but something just cheered me up.” She chuckled and pecked me on the cheek.
“Well, hopefully it will cheer you up all day and then at the end of the day it can make you extremely happy.” I growled at her. Yep, I needed to sit down. I kissed her on the lips, and she pulled away. “Not while staff are here Mr!” She laughed, pulling away and I blew air out of my nose before heading back to my seat.
“Fine.” I glared and she laughed.
“Ok, well there’s pastries on my desk, but I wasn’t sure which ones you wanted so there’s a lot. Come help yourself…” She walked away and I swore she was purposely swinging her hips. “But maybe you might need to wait a few minutes.” She giggled before leaving my office. Damn, I loved that woman, She had brought me out of my sour mood yet again. I would talk to Chris later. First, I needed to calm down then go and eat some pastries.
Chris’s POV
I was answering a lot of public relation emails over a few things when my phone rang. I looked at the time and realised it was 11am. I hadn’t even realised it was that late in the morning.
“Chris?” I heard Michael’s voice on the other end, and he sounded worried.
“Whats wrong?”
“You haven’t had any strange emails?” He asked and I looked at my screen with uncertainty, besides a lot of emails asking about the Kira incident and Michael’s engagement, there wasn’t anything unusual.
“Nope, nothing unusual. Why?” I asked, not sure I wanted to know.
“Ok well, let’s just say that whoever is behind all of this, knows us pretty well.”
“Huh?” I heard Michael take in a deep breath before he started reeling off what the person had emailed. They had known us since we were young, given the amount of info they knew. But what worried Michael the most wasn’t just the information they knew about us; it was the information they had on Rebecca too.
“Great, so its someone who has a vendetta against us too, not dad or just Rebecca.” I heard Michael grunt in agreement. “Ok, well we need to find out who it is obviously. I hadn’t wanted to share this with you, but I think I have an idea… But the less people that know about it the better.”
“I’m listening.” Michael said, his surly usual self, back.
“Remember Kirsty, who was my top designer with Janine, she left to have a child.” I heard Michael grunt that he remembered. “Well, she has agreed to apply for a job at the Leaf’s. She wants to come back to work here as payments, which I’m more than happy to oblige. I never told Kira why she left here, but Kira respected her designs. So shes going to say she left because she found out I was a horrible person and try to find out any information she can.” I heard Michael sigh.
“Doesn’t that make us as bad as Kira?” He asked and I knew he would. Michael might be bossy, surly and angry most of the time, but his morals were intact.
“Yes, but she started this. Got any better ideas?”
“Are we telling Rebecca?” He asked and I cringed.
“I wasn’t going to… She would hate the idea, the same way you do. That’s why I wasn’t going to tell you either.”
“When is Kirsty coming to talk to you?” I was a little taken aback by that.
“Wednesday, why?”
“Ill be there.” Then he hung up. That was easier than I expected. He must be really worried about Rebecca. What was strange though was that there was no one from our pasts that this could possibly be. Sure, Mr Leaf had known dad a while, but he was never a part of our lives and especially not Rebeccas. Anyone from College or university was no longer a part of our lives either. And there was absolutely no way that Kira knew everything Michael had read from the email. Who was behind all of this?
