Chapter 33
Michael’s POV
I had spent years planning how I would propose to Rebecca if my dreams ever came true. A simple plan of taking her to her favourite bar, a few friends around, a few shots and then popping the question in front of them. However, due to her accusing me of not knowing her I wanted to prove how well I did know her. The food that was ordered were all of her favourites. I had even made my own bread for the sandwiches, and everything was fruit flavoured and shaped. Her favourite drinks were behind the bar. I had written little notes all around the bar. Chris had told me she didn’t have any intentions of getting involved in the party and was going to slip in unnoticed with the only plan to talk to me. She didn’t actually want to come. However, I made sure Chris told most of the employees to read some of the notes out loud so she would hear them and realise how well we knew each other.
Yes, I had been upset over her lack of communication, but I could also understand her reasoning. Chris was my brother, he always came first but Rebecca was a constant in my life too. I had been angry and caused her reaction. Then she hadn’t wanted to talk to me for fear I would leave her. I had wanted so badly to talk to her all week and explain everything but I also knew I never wanted to lose her again. I didn’t trust myself to not just blurt out the question anywhere. I wanted it to be in front of Chris and our friends and family. She hadn’t even noticed her mother and father sitting near the stage.
There was a part of me that was sad she thought this was all for Janine, as had Chris to begin with. Yes, Janine had been a big help through everything but no one could ever replace Rebecca in my heart. However, I also wanted to see her reaction, see if she truly wanted me back in her life. She hadn’t needed or wanted me for 3 months and it had felt like an eternity. I had seen her as soon as I walked in but refused to look at her, fearing she would distract me before I could propose.
As I knelt on one knee and saw the tears, I couldn’t help but smile. I wanted to scoop her up, but I needed to say the words I had been practicing all week and put this ring on her finger.
“Rebecca, Becks, Ive known you nearly all of my life.” She nodded and smiled. “I have always been there on the sidelines even when you didn’t realise, but you were always there for me too. Doing little things that neither of us realised at the time. I feel like Ive gotten to know you all over again the last few months and despite hurdles that we won’t talk about again tonight.” People laughed, knowing I meant Kira but there were so many other hurdles that I was talking about too. She nodded her head and I reached for her hand. “I know it’s only made us stronger. Ive been in love with you since we were 17 years old, but I have loved you longer than that too. Please will you make my heart whole and marry me?” I asked. She didn’t answer straight away, and I could see her holding back the water works that threatened to flow over. She was definitely about to explode in a bomb of tears and snot any minute. She held my hand tighter and I held my breath along with everyone else in the room.
“Y… y…yes! Always!” She said and I quickly got up, grabbing her into my chest as people cheered out loud. I hid her face from everyone as she cried into my chest. When she had calmed down, I placed the ring onto her finger and kissed her deeply. She pulled away, complaining about snot and tears when Chris brought up tissues. She laughed and wiped them away before kissing me again. Then jumping on Chris for a hug but also slapping his arm.
“You made me go through all those emotions and you knew!” She said to him angrily, but Chris and I just laughed. She pouted but then took my hand as I guided her off the stage towards the crowd of people who would want to congratulate her.
Rebecca's POV
“Mum, Dad?!” I yelled as I saw them and jumped into their arms. “Wait, if youre here, when I spoke to you yesterday, that means you knew already?” My mum looked at me sheepishly whilst my father looked confused.
“I didn’t want to ruin the surprise, also I did tell you things would work out didn’t i?” I glared at her whilst Michael chuckled at the side of me. My father just leant forwards to hug me.
“Oh, don’t you laugh, you’re in for a world of torture later.” I whispered into his ear. But he only raised an eyebrow as if asking me, really?
I was congratulated by people I didn’t know until we came across Mr Reve senior. He looked at Michael quite angrily but then at me and his expression softened.
“Why didn’t you just tell me?” He said to Michael, in the softest tone I had ever heard him use. “You know I love Rebecca like a daughter. I’d have tried to set you up and sort this out for you.”
“I didn’t want you to dad, plus she liked someone else…” He broke off and looked at me with love.
“I was in love with Chris sir.” I said to his father who now looked at me surprised. “It’s a really long story but I thought I loved Chris, but it was Michael after all these years. I needed to realise that, and Michael let me. If you’d have interfered, I think I’d have run a mile.” I laughed and so did his father. “Well, I guess it’s good I didn’t then. And I need to go over the Chris thing with you again at some point because he refused Kira for you to start… so how did you end up with Michael?” I looked at him surprised but he hugged me tightly before I could ask anymore. He welcomed me to the family even though he said Ive always really been part of the family really and I laughed.
Finally, we found Janine. She turned to me with a look that said she was sorry. I wasn’t angry at her. At that moment in time, I envied her, was jealous of her and if Michael had chosen her then I knew it was my own fault. I was also jealous of the fact she had been Michael’s confidant over the last few months when I should have been there for him.
“Thank you for being there when I wasn’t Janine.” And I hugged her.
“You’re not mad?” She asked me, genuinely.
“Nope, I was upset, but I think I was angrier at myself than I ever was thinking about you being with him. I caused all of this. Well, Chris and I have. So, I can’t be mad at you. Also, you were one of the few people on my side. Thank you for helping Michael with all this!”
“Oh, I didn’t actually do anything. It was all him. I was just the runner.” She chuckled and smiled at us both before waving bye and heading over to a group of her work colleagues. I smiled at everyone and finally turned to Michael, who hadn’t let go of my hand once.
“I think I need some air.” I smiled and showed him the cigarettes in my bag. I was stressed but a good type of stress. And I could see how tired Michael was in his eyes. We needed a few minutes together without everyone else. We slipped out of the doors and headed to the side of the building. But before I could get out the cigarettes, he had pinned me against the wall and was staring down at me.
