Chapter 34
Michael's POV
As I looked down at Rebecca, there were many thoughts going through my mind. She looked amazing. I knew she would wear peach today. When Janine mentioned pastels, I just knew she would go to her favourite one. Whilst she loved every colour and opals were her favourite, peach was her favourite in most other things, food, drink, smell and clothing. The dress she was wearing showed her lovely legs off just enough but not too much and the tight bodice showed her curves. I just wanted to carry her home and keep her all to myself. She was going to be my wife, finally, after years of dreaming of this moment she was mine. Shed accepted my proposal and she still loved me.
“Whats wrong?” She asked, but she didn’t look worried as she looked into my face with a soft smile.
“Nothing, I just want to cherish this moment.” I leant down to kiss her, gently. She reciprocated but as I put my hands around her face, wanting to feel her skin I noticed she was crying. “Are you ok?” I asked, pulling away from the kiss. She had kept her eyes closed and was smiling.
“Yes, I’m just so happy.” She opened her eyes and looked at me. “I honestly thought I had lost you. I thought you had moved onto Janine because she was with you through this mess. I should have been by your side, fighting with you but instead I shut myself away and put everything on your shoulders to fix. None of this was your fault, it was mine and Chris’s to deal with.” I looked at her with a hint of sadness in my heart.
“None of this mess was solely yours and Chris’ fault. We all make mistakes and I think we are all a little to blame.” She looked at me confused. “If I had just come clean to you, years ago, instead of holding in my feelings because I knew you liked Chris then we could have dealt with this sooner. If Chris had come clean earlier, he would never have become engaged to Kira. Or, if he didn’t act as obsessed with you around us all and just admitted he loved you like a sister instead then Kira wouldn’t have been as jealous and obsessed. Alternatively, if you’d have shown us your designs earlier instead of being worried then we would have known they were yours.” I saw her go red at this. “I never wanted you to become a designer.” She snorted at this, knowing I had never supported that passion. “But that wasn’t because I didn’t think you were good, your eye for details is incredible. It was because, as you now know. It’s a cutthroat business. It brings out the worst in people and makes them do things they don’t want… Even you. Even Chris struggles sometimes, why do you think I’m the one who dishes out the punishments or sends the angry emails.” I chuckled and she smiled.
“I know. And I am second guessing whether I want to continue this passion too.” I looked at her and frowned.
“I want you to do what you enjoy and what youre good at. If you want to stay at the company, I will support you and always protect you.” She smiled but still looked sad. She put her arms around my waist and hugged me.
“I know. I really loved being your assistant though.” She said into my chest. “We probably should go back in you know. I know it’s a works party but there are still people there just for us.” I nodded but didn’t move away and held her to me tighter.
“Just a few more minutes.”
Chris’s POV
I was looking for Michael and Rebecca when someone told me they had nipped outside. Neither of them thought I knew they smoked, but I could smell it on them regularly, so I knew that’s probably what they were doing. I sneaked up to the corner, fully expecting to jump out on them and catch them in the act and finally let them know I knew but instead I heard Michael’s voice telling Rebecca we were all at fault.
He was, as always, right. Michael was only a few minutes older than me, but he had always acted like the big brother, looking out for us and he was always the wisest of the three of us. Hearing him say it the way he did really shook me. I think I had always known deep down that I would rather keep Rebecca close to me instead of dating her and jeopardizing our friendship and I should have just been honest. Michael should have told all of us the truth about his feelings and Rebecca should have told me or at least questioned the evening of her kissing Michael. However, I don’t think I would change anything. Everyone was happy even though we had been through some awful things the last few months. I was glad they finally found out their true feelings and I think if we had discussed this earlier, things may have turned out differently. I also would have still married Kira and never found out the person she could be. Despite me still thinking she was a good person deep down, the fact she would willingly hurt the entire company just to get back at me and Rebecca was diabolical.
I heard Michael ask if they could stay hugging for a few more minutes and decided I would give them their engagement present later. I walked back into the bar and found my mother laughing away with Rebecca's mum. They had always been good friends since we met Rebecca and even though their backgrounds were different, they didn’t let that get in their way, always attending each other’s functions. Rebecca's parents owned a farm and were extremely self-sufficient, not really wanting for anything. However, my mother had been born into money and her wedding to my father had been arranged by their parents. That didn’t mean they didn’t grow to love each other over time though.
A few minutes later, Rebecca and Michael came back in, yet again smelling of smoke. I rolled my eyes at the missed chance to pull them up about it. I was about to go over and give them their present when all of the lights in the bar went off and disco music began playing along with flashing lights. Rebecca started laughing and pulled Michael onto the dance floor. I joined them there and we all laughed and danced together. It was amazing seeing Michael so happy and outgoing when most of his life he had been serious and stoic. I would pull Rebecca in for a spin and Michael would just happily let her dance around him. He wasn’t a dancer by any stretch and tended to just move his arms and stand in one spot. We were regularly brought drinks by everyone, especially Michael and Rebecca, as congratulations and I knew Rebecca was getting tipsy.
When people started leaving the party, I figured it would be a good time to give them their gifts. Janine and I had been working on them for the last few days, working tirelessly on only them, and we were extremely proud of them.
“Guys, can me and Janine give you our engagement present now?” I shouted over the music as Janine came over.
“Presents?” Rebecca questioned.
“Yep! Follow us!” Janine laughed and looped her arm through Rebecca’s. Michael followed with me by his side and looked at me questioningly. I smiled big and put my arm over his shoulders. He looked uncomfortable and tried to shrug me off, but I refused to let him with him grumbling at the side of me.
“Open them, open them, open them!” Janine was squealing excitedly as she handed Rebecca hers. I handed Michael his which was larger than Rebeccas. They looked at us then each other and smiled, tearing into the paper. Michael methodically and Rebecca like a child at Christmas. Suddenly Rebeccas eyes were filled with tears as she saw the large handbag.
“When did you do this?!” She asked as Michael unwrapped his satchel. Then from nowhere Janine brought my matching one out too.
“We’ve had it in the works since Michael released the prints to you. We wanted to make them, so you three had the first ones, then when Michael told me about the engagement and spoke to Chris that night, we put our heads together to get them finished for today.” Janine was practically vibrating on the spot with excitement and I loved her energy, she was a spark of electricity and even though she was timid and softly spoken I knew she was full of passion.
