Chapter 38 Chris’s POV Well… this wasn’t awkward at all. I was sat with my parents and Rebeccas parents, waiting for Rebecca and Michael to turn up. They were, quite loudly, now talking about how they never saw this coming, fully expecting me and Rebecca to end up together. Then the conversation turned to Kira. I was sat, lips pressed together, contemplating whether I could get away with making my orange juice alcoholic. After what seemed an age, and 100 texts that I had been sending over and over to both their phones, they finally turned up. Rebecca was well put together, but Michael looked flustered. His hair was loose, and he was wearing jeans. I looked at him in absolute confusion but all he did was smile. “Its about time.” I said through gritted teeth. “Oh, come on Chris, we aren’t that late.” Rebecca said, poking my arm for me to move up on the bench seat I was sitting on. Michael, now letting go of Rebecca’s hand turned into his usual serious self and as he pulled a chair up to the side of the table, he apologised for them being late. He gave some lame excuse about the car not starting properly. I coughed to cover up my laugh and Rebecca kicked me under the table. It actually hurt and I had to resist bending down to rub it. “That’s ok…” My father said, but I could see he was tense. Had Michael being late really spoiled his mood from before. “Yeah, its fine, we understand.” Rebecca’s mother teased, wiggling her eyebrows at Rebecca, causing her to go bright red. At that I saw my mum giggle and even a snigger from my father. Good, he wasn’t angry. Michael sat on the chair and pulled it closer to Rebecca. I could see his face was its usual stoic, straight self and frowned. He had been so happy the last few days, but here we were, in front of father and he was back to normal. I sighed and my dad looked at me strangely. “So! Did you have a lovely evening?” Mrs Harper asked. “We did, thank you!” Michael said, giving a slight smile. “I did eventually…” Rebecca pouted, and everyone laughed. I looked at Rebecca and even though she was laughing with everyone I could see she was genuinely sad. Michael was looking at her too and I saw him put his hand on her leg. It didn’t go unnoticed by my father who frowned. We spent the morning, eating, laughing and talking mostly about wedding plans. Michael and Rebecca both said they hadn’t talked about things yet but the parents were extremely helpful, not, at giving their opinions. By the time breakfast had finished I felt like I needed to go back to bed. Rebecca was saying goodbye to her parents and promising they would visit soon. I noticed Michael had stepped aside with our father and they were speaking extremely seriously about something. “Whats wrong?” I asked, concerned. Michael looked dad who just nodded. “I got a strange call and text this morning, that’s all.” “Wait, you too?” I asked and they both looked at me concerned. “About the servers being hacked?” Mchael nodded and my father looked even more serios than before. Maybe he had been worried about the company earlier, not mad at Michael. “That’s the one.” Michael growled. “But its obvious who it is right?” he asked, and I nodded, feeling hurt. My father leant forwards and put a hand on my shoulder. “Don’t worry, its not your fault Chris.” He said, comforting me as he always did. Michaels eyes had darkened, and I knew it was because father always comforted me but didn’t seem to him. I frowned at Michael who realised I had seen and straightened up. I honestly don t think father loved me any more than him, it was just how different we were that he reacted differently. “I know, she probably would have done something like this regardless, but I can’t help but feel a little responsible.” I said, shrugging my dads hand off my shoulder. “Regardless, shes not that smart. If she had wanted to hack the server, she would have done so when we kept Rebeccas dolphin design away from her. She would have also stolen a lot more from us.” My father nodded and I shrugged. “She is a lot cleverer than people give her credit for…” I trailed off, knowing there was a brilliant mind in there behind the showy girl she projected. Michael huffed and my dad looked dubious. I sighed, not wanting to argue with them. “Everything ok?” Rebecca asked, coming over to give our father a hug goodbye. He smiled and pulled her in for a big hug, just like normal. “Absolutely, just business talk.” He answered as he let her go. “which you aren’t privy to unless youre coming back…” He said, looking at her with a smirk. “She hasn’t decided yet…” Michael added, putting his arm around her shoulder protectively. My father just shrugged but I looked at her. She needed to come back; she had a brilliant eye for this, but I wouldn’t talk about it to her now. I would talk to her Friday when we went out… if she still wanted to. Michael and Rebecca said their goodbyes and asked if I was joining them. I nodded but as I followed, after waving goodbye to the Harpers, my father held me back. “Chris…” I looked at him with concern. “What happened? Between you and Rebecca I mean?” He asked and I sighed. “That’s not a story for today dad. But let’s just say we never really loved each other, just childish crushes. She loved Michael all along.” He frowned then seemed to sap out of his thoughts. “Ok, well, I’ll be I the office Monday. We can have lunch.” He said, not asking. I sighed, knowing it wasn’t a request. I waved goodbye and followed Rebecca and Michael out as we headed to Rebecca’s house which was closer. Rebecca’s POV “Well, that was, something…” I said, looking at Chris and Michael or their opinions. Chris laughed. “That’s one way of describing it.” Michael mumbled. “I guess we probably should work out some wedding details soon though…” I said, not wanting to push the topic too quickly. I saw Michael smile, but he didn’t say anything, and I looked at him with a raised eyebrow, but he ignored me. Chris was walking with us, not really saying much and constantly looking at his phone. “You, ok?” I asked him and he hummed a yes but didn’t look away from his phone. I hadn’t said anything, but I was sure there was something going off. “Oh!” Chris suddenly exclaimed. “Are we going out Friday?” He asked me, smiling. I smiled back at him with a massive grin. Things were back to normal, and I loved it. “If you want to?” I said, looking at both guys. Michael looked at me and nodded. “Absolutely, I think we need some normality, plus we need to have our won celebrations!” Chris laughed, bumping my arm with his. I smiled and put my arm through his then held Michael’s hand with my other.
