Chapter 40
Chris’s POV
My entire world was collapsing around me. She couldn’t be serious. We had been careful and barely slept together, then my mind wandered back to that fateful night when everything seemed to start going wrong. The night I had seen Michael’s attitude towards Rebecca. The night Rebecca had thought I had ditched her.
“Chris?” Kira asked.
“How far along?” I asked.
“About 14 weeks…” She answered and I could tell she was biting her lip.
“Ok…” I said, not really knowing what to say. The timing worked out about right.
“You remember the night, right?” Kira asked and I huffed a yes. “Right…” It felt like Kira was holding something back.
“What aren’t you telling me?” I asked. She huffed but didn’t say anything.
“We need to decide what we want to do Chris…”
“What do you mean?” I asked, before realising she meant about the baby. Surely, she didn’t expect us to get back together. “You can’t be serious? After what you did, you don’t honestly think I would take you back, right?”
“No, absolutely not. Do I keep the baby?”
Rebecca’s POV
Chris came stumbling back into the flat as Michael and I were kissing. I pulled away and noticed he was pale and seemed like he was going to be sick. I quickly ran to get him a glass of water as Michael walked over to him.
“What the hell happened?” Michael growled as Chris sat down and put his head into his hands. I brought him the water and he smiled at me in thanks.
“Chris?” I asked as he didn’t answer Michael.
“Well…” he said as he downed the glass of water. “Kira’s pregnant.” I knew my jaw had dropped open and I had to compose myself quickly. However, Michael’s reaction was worse. His face darkened and I could see anger swirling in his grey smoky eyes. I looked at him alarmed.
“How far along?” I asked, hoping to distract Chris from Michael’s face.
“Around 14 weeks she says.” Oh… that was the night Chris left us for his family emergency which wasn’t an emergency. Chris looked at my face and clearly knew what I was thinking.
“Yeah…” He said and looked at me with a lot of regret in his eyes. I sat on the sofa, looking at him with a serious face.
“Whats wrong?” I asked.
“Well, I might have lied about that night to you.” I heard Michael tut and he walked away.
“Yeah, I know.” I said causing Chris to look at Michael alarmed.
“Michael didn’t tell me. I worked it out. That was the night you realised he liked me. I knew there was something fishy going on because you ignored my voice message and texts.” At this, Chris looked confused.
“What messages?” He asked, confusion clear on his face. Well, that explained a lot.
“I left you a voice message and a text that night. I was distraught that you ditched us for Kira, not realising the reason you left was Michael. I left you a voice message finally admitting my feelings but that I was going to move on, I said that I was sorry for wishing you and Kira would break up. I said that I would always be your best friend and understood if you never wanted to speak to me again after that night.” I said, finally realising something but Chris beat me to it.
“Kira must have deleted that message, she had to have done. I was upset after seeing Michael fawn over you and left with Kira and slept with her without protection…” He was thinking. “But if she heard that message then why the hell would she delete it? She was jealous of you and states that the reason she did all this is because you would have stolen me. However…”
“I’d said I was moving on and finished… surely she would have been happy about that?” I finished for him. Michael had come back, and his face was less angry, but I knew he was still annoyed.
“Maybe this was always her plan?” Michael said, his tone steady and cold, just like his old self. I sighed.
“What do you mean? Blaming me?” I scrunched my eyes She didn’t want Chris to know I was moving on because he might have either come running to me and we would be together now, or because he would have moved on too?” I asked, even more confused and sat down, rubbing my temples.
“You think that was her plan? That she wasn’t actually jealous, she just always meant to try and take down the company?” Chris asked, his chin in his hands. He looked defeated.
“If that is true, then how do we know she is even pregnant?” Michael asked, his tone still cold. There was something else going on under that icy interior and I wasn’t sure what.
“We definitely didn’t have protection and I don’t think she was on birth control.” I was still looking at Michael as his eyes glanced briefly at me. With this I began laughing, realising why he was so upset. It wasn’t anger, it was fear. The twins looked at me confused and I got up and kissed Michael on his cheek. I pulled his ear down to me.
“I thought you were mad at Kira, but I know why youre upset… Don’t worry… I’m on the pill.” I whispered into his ear and for the first time I saw his cheeks slowly turn a shade of pink. Chris looked at him with his mouth open.
“What the heck did you say to him?” Chris asked, genuinely surprised I could elicit this kind of response from his brother. I laughed and Michael coughed, excusing himself to the bathroom. There, his mood might be a little better now.
“Anyway… do you think maybe Kira was asked to get company secrets by her father? Your father knows Mr Leaf really well, right?” Michael was back again, looking less flushed and back to his normal, straight face, a glint of anger at Kira and his eyes told me I was in for it later.
“I don’t think Kira is blameless but there’s definitely something else going on… Anyway.” Michael looked at me sternly. “I don’t think this is your problem.” I looked at him confused.
“What? Why?” I was genuinely shocked. Of course, this was my problem especially as I was part of the problem.
“You don’t work for us anymore… do you?” Chris asked, his eyebrows wiggling. I was about to say something then stopped. Chris was right. I had quit, only going back to help with the mess caused by Kira. Did I want to go back? I didn’t enjoy my new job at the fabric store though. I had thoroughly enjoyed being Michael’s assistant and I still wanted to design, just maybe not as competitively as some of the other designers. I saw Chris look at Michael and smile. What was he planning?
“Well, there’s plenty of openings at the moment for designers and I believe Michael still needs a PA. And I hear the bosses at the company are really appreciative right now. In fact they have been offering raises to the staff.” I bit my lip, now knowing exactly what he meant. “In fact, I believe Michael even said something about his PA going part time and part time as a designer, but I guess that might not happen…” Damn him! That is exactly what Michael had talked about and it had sounded appealing. I glared at him, and Chris gave me one of his award-winning smiles. I sighed and looked at Michael. He wasn’t smiling but his eyes showed hope. I sighed heavily and Chris cheered, knowing he had won me over. Michael didn’t cheer but put his arms around my shoulders and gave me a big hug.
