Chapter 20 Michael's POV Why hadn’t Chris just told her the truth. He was clearly angry at me and was also super jealous. I also knew Rebecca had left him a voicemail, one telling him her feelings too. Why had he lied to her? Surely that would have been the night for them to admit stuff. When Rebecca had come to work Monday and I saw Chris still with Kira, knowing he had been to see her. I had assumed that Chris had turned her down, claiming duty to the family or that they had yet again decided their friendship was more important than a relationship. That was why she had been jealous of Kira all week. “What?” She questioned. “Nothing” I answered, quickly, pouring us another shot and looking around for the peach schnapps I kept in for Rebecca. “Oh, come on, cut the bull crap Michael. Remember I know you well, there was a look of intrigue when I told you what happened to Chris…” I looked at her with my brows furrowed in confusion. She really did know me too well. “Now youre confused. Ive spent years with you Michael, you're not that hard to read. Come on, spill!” “Well, that’s just not the reason I heard for him leaving. It was actually something I did. He realised after he was being a bit crazy and apologised.” I said, cautiously. “Oh! Did he get angry because of the Kira thing?” Rebeca offered before I could decide whether I wanted to lie or not. “Yep, he was mad about that, but he knows he could have turned her down too. Father wants this to happen, but he would never force us to do something we truly didn’t want to do.” “So, he left in a huff with you. So why lie to me?” I shrugged, not knowing if I could trust myself to answer her without stuttering, something I did when nervous. It didn’t happen often but that was one of my tells and I was pretty sure Rebecca would know it. “Well, it was weird, but he explained that, what he hasn’t done is explain why he's avoiding me all week and not being a good friend.” “Well…” She looked at me and I looked at her with sadness. “That also might be my fault.” She furrowed her brows in confusion. “I asked him to come tonight, basically accused him of being a bad friend and he said, you have me too and he needs to be with Kira more but that he will always be your best friend.” I sighed heavily. “I think you both just need to be honest with each other and tell him you like him; he might leave Kira.” She shook her head at me. “I don’t think he would.” She looked down sadly and I slid a peach and lemonade towards her. She practically finished it in one, so I poured her another, but less strong this time. I didn’t want her getting too drunk. “I think he will stay with Kira. We’ve told each other before you know…” I wasn’t shocked, I was just confused she remember the times. “There have been many times we’ve come close to sleeping with each other and calling it off last minute. We've kissed a bunch and admitted we liked each other as more than friends but one or both of us has always gotten cold feet last minute, not wanting to ruin our friendship.” She put her head into her hands, not crying, just tired by everything, I think. “Becks…” I didn’t really know what to say. “No, enough sad drama. We came here to dance and get you drunk remember. Neither of which we’re doing. Get a drink down you Mr and let’s dance!” Rebeccas POV Michael was definitely more comfortable in his house. He actually attempted to dance with me, shaking his hips and arms before laughing out loud and clearly feeling embarrassed. He had already had a full bottle of wine and we had indulged in a few more shots. I could tell he was getting tipsy as he was wanting a cigarette but refused to leave the apartment so started craving food instead. I suggested ordering but Michael was having none of it and instead searched for ingredients to cook with. We ended up with grilled cheese sandwiches and ate them on a large tablecloth, sat on the dance floor with another drink. “Wow, they’re amazing, this bread is delicious.” I said, genuinely surprised by how it tasted. Michael looked at me in a way I couldn’t describe, he looked pleased but in a weird way. “I made it” He said and continued eating. “As in baked the bread?!” I asked, in shock. He only nodded and finished eating so took a sip of his wine before getting up to wash his plate and hands. “I don’t believe you; I have never seen you bake!” I shouted, getting up too and handing him my plate before heading back to ball up the tablecloth and empty any crumbs into the bin. “Where do you think our muffins came from at college?” My mouth yet again dropped open. “My lemon muffins were made by you?” He chuckled again, a noise I was beginning to like more and more. He turned and smiled at me, taking the tablecloth from me and dumping it straight into the washing machine. “Yep, if you don’t believe me, I’ll show you how to make them one day.” I could only nod in awe. He smiled. “You look tired, want to call it?” He asked, looking into my face. “Absolutely not, you’re not tipsy yet and I want to dance more…” I yawned and when Michael looked at me with an ‘I told you so’ look, I pouted at him. “Please, just slow dancing?” He rolled his eyes and took a deep breath. He changed the music to some classical music and held out his hand. I took it and we walked to the dining room floor. I looked up at him, wondering if he would really let me slow dance with him. He seemed to notice and put his arms around my waist. I smiled and put my arms around his neck. Michael's POV I knew my heart was beating fast, my mind kept revisiting the night when we did this last. I knew that she wouldn’t kiss me, she didn’t feel that way about me, but it didn’t mean I wasn’t feeling all of those emotions over again. She was looking at me and smiling, she kept talking about random things, but I didn’t trust myself to talk back to her so just merely kept nodding or shaking my head as needed. “This feels so natural.” I heard her say with a deep content sigh. “Have we done this before?” I nodded my head but again didn’t trust myself to talk. “When?” I sighed. “A…a” I coughed, clearing my dry throat. “A long time ago, in college, you were majorly drunk, and Chris didn’t want to dance, he headed straight up to bed so you made me dance with you…” She looked at me confused and then realisation seemed to flood her face. The next thing I knew she had put her hands in my hair and was pulling me closer to her. Rebecca's POV I kissed him, I needed to know. I had a vague memory of Chris dancing with me, us kissing passionately and then him telling me he loved me but then I must have passed out and it was fuzzy the next morning. Chris never said anything to me. Had it actually been Michael? The kiss felt the same, heated and passionate, different to the kisses I remembered sneaking with Chris behind clubs or in bathrooms. It made me feel something, a passion I didn’t know was there. I felt Michael's hands move up from my waist and they pressed into my back, deepening the kiss. He didn’t pull away. After what seemed like an eternity, he pulled away and pushed me back. I raised my hands to my lips. “It was you?” I asked. He didn’t say anything. “I’m the girl you love?” He still didn’t answer and was just looking at me, his eyes wide. I could see the panic rising in him. “I…I promised Chris…” He was stuttering, clear signs he didn’t know what to say or do. He hadn’t done it for years, back when his father would chastise him for everything. “Michael its ok. I…” I was confused. All these years this was one of the moments I held onto, dreamed about. It was one of the moments I thought Chris had truly told me he loved me. But it was Michael. My mind was reeling. “I thought you were Chris…” I hadn’t realised what I said but I saw his eyes grow dark and he retreated further away from me. “I think its time to call it a night, I’m sorry Rebecca.” He walked towards his front door, put his shoes on and held my coat out to me. I sighed; he had returned to his usual cold hearted, devoid of emotion state. I took my coat, popped on my shoes and left his building. He walked me home and as I turned to say goodbye after opening my front door, he was already walking away. I took out my phone and sent him a text message, the memory of the night had come crashing back to me. I’m sorry… You always look after me, even when I’m an i***t. I don’t deserve you.
