Chapter 4
Michael's POV
“I’m not coming!” I growled down the phone at Chris.
“Oh, come on!” I heard him whine. “It’s been ages since you came out with us, and Rebecca needs both our support.” He continued whining. I closed my eyes, trying to get patience from somewhere.
“Is Kira coming” I asked, the disgust very clear in my voice.
“No, just us three, like old times.” I rolled my eyes, old times for us three usually consisted of me looking after two very poorly drunks followed by two extremely hungover people. IT also hadn’t actually been that long, we spent a lot of time together.
“You know Rebecca is going to be drinking her sorrows away and you are absolutely going to be footing the bill…” I asked, wondering if he had genuinely thought about this.
“Yes, I know, I want to do it. She needs it.” He said, sadness evident in his voice. “Please!” He begged and part of me wondered why he wanted me there so much.
“Why?” I asked, simply. I heard Chris choke on his end.
“What do you mean?” he asked, once he could speak again.
“Why do you want me there, what happened to the two musketeers?” He laughed at their old nickname.
“Honestly?” He asked and I grunted at him. I was almost sure I knew the reason, but he needed to voice it for me. “Fine, three-fold actually. First, Kira hates us being alone, despite us being best friends she is absolutely jealous of her and kind of with good reason because, Two, I’m pretty sure you already know but I care about that girl a ridiculous amount. I don’t want to get drunk feel bad and do something stupid. That brings me to three, you need to get out more.” He said rather smugly.
“I knew that already…” I growled.
“What, that you need to get out more?” he chuckled.
“Very funny. I think everyone knows you like Rebecca, its not a secret.” I heard him sigh. “Honestly, I think everyone thought you’d end up together but then Kira came along.” I heard him start to argue. “I know, youre doing it for the family and business. I’m…” I stopped myself but knew he needed to hear it. “I’m sorry!”
“What? Is someone threatening you? Are you ok?” He laughed. I didn’t apologise very often but I knew Chris was taking on all of this because I flat out refused.
“Ha-ha!” I said, dryly. “Seriously, I know this is my fault and I am. But I can’t marry Kira or anyone for that matter.”
“Why?” Chris asked and I sighed. “If were having a real talk right now, why can’t you marry anyone?”
“Theres already someone who has my heart.” I heard Chris take in a deep breath. I heard the smile coming through in his voice.
“WHO?” he breathed, holding in his excitement.
“I’ll come tonight, Chris, let me know the time and place” I hung up to him telling me I was cruel and not fair. I did smile at this. I knew Chris would be on my case for a while now.
Rebeccas POV
“PARTY TIME!” I scream as Chris brings shots over to our table. It was such a good job it was Friday, and I wasn’t starting as Michaels PA until Monday as I knew we would be going absolutely wild tonight. Although, glaring at Michael who was sat, sulking in the corner of our table, maybe not that wild if Mr serious was here all night.
“A toast to Rebecca.” I saw Michael roll his eyes and grab a shot. “I am extremely sorry that politics caused you to not get your dream job! I will forever be making it up to you!” Chris shouted and we all clinked our glasses and downed our shots. A waitress brought over our main drinks. I was having a drink made up of vodka, cherry sours and coke. It tasted amazing and unfortunately, I did drink it like pop.
I heard some awesome dance beats come on and squealed, wanting to dance. However, I noticed Chris was at the bar talking to someone, so I looked at Michael and wiggled my eyebrows. He looked at me like looks could kill but I knew with a few more drinks in him he would get on the dance floor. He tended to loosen up after a few, being less judgemental and more brooding serious.
“Please!” I pouted. “I got hired by a brute today after not getting my dream job. I’m very sad!” I said, trying to keep a straight face. I thought I saw a smirk, but it was dark, and I wasn’t sure. However, he did take off his jacket and I knew I had won. I ran to the dance floor and held out my hands for Michael to join me. He didn’t take my hands but joined me anyway and I danced my heart out. Michael didn’t dance as such, more stood there and let me dance around him. I didn’t mind, I just wanted company.
After a few dances we headed back to the table, and I noticed Chris was on his phone. He smiled at us as we arrived back at the table but carried on with his phone. I exchanged a glance with Michael, and he mouthed “work” and I rolled my eyes. I sat down and drank my cherry drink in one, probably not a good idea as I was defiantly already starting to feel tipsy. Michael spoke to a waitress who nodded and disappeared.
“OI!” I shouted to Chris.
“Sorry!” he said and did seem sorry. “Its work! I need to head out and make a phone call. I won’t be long then Ill be on that dance floor with you all night!” He smiled and I nodded. I furrowed my brows as I watched him walk away. He was dressed in tight dark blue trousers and a light blue shirt. Dark black shoes and his blonde hair was swept back away from his face. I knew I needed to move on from him, but I couldn’t. I had loved Chris for years now. I knew it would never happen but that didn’t mean I couldn’t dream. Suddenly a waitress popped a martini down in front of me and I thanked her, looking at Michael in confusion. He held his glass up.
“To you, Rebecca!” and he downed his drink. I smiled and drank my martini slowly, looking at the door longing Chris to come back soon.
Michael’s POV
I saw how Rebecca looked at Chris and it broke my heart. She looked so sad but whenever Chris looked at her, she would immediately fix her face to be happy and smiley. I knew she had been in love with him since college. She regularly, when drunk, told me she did. I was sat next to Chris, and I knew he wasn’t working at all. Kira was on his case, asking him how long he would be and how drunk he was and if I was there. I rolled my eyes. I saw Rebecca looking at the door, waiting for Chris to come back and I knew he would be a while, arguing with Kira outside.
I removed my tie and placed it with my jacket, it was getting hot, so I opened my top button on my shirt too. I knew Rebecca wanted to dance so when she finished the martini, I ordered for her I got up and signalled to the dance floor. She looked at me confused for a second before smiling sadly at me and getting up, I sighed. I wanted to grab her and hug her, but I knew if I did, I wouldn’t let go. I ushered her to the dance floor and attempted to dance. It was absolutely not my thing, but she needed cheering up and Chris had said that was the whole point of tonight. Every now and again she would dance around me, and I could hear her giggle out loud.
Chris did eventually come back and brought us shots to the dance floor. Rebecca was getting a little tipsy by now and Chris cut in, to dance. He had clearly sorted things out with Kira, and I bowed out. I headed back to the table and sat down, requesting another martini. The waitress nodded at me and brought me one. After a few songs, Chris came back to the table alone and I worriedly looked for Rebecca.
“She’s gone to the bathroom, don’t worry!” Chris said. He was sweating and I felt his head, he was warm but not burning up.
“Are you ok?” I asked, concerned.
“I think the stress is honestly knocking me out and the alcohol has defiantly made it worse!” Chris answered, honestly and ordered a water. I knew he was stressed at having to hire Kira and that Kira was wanting to move the relationship to the next level. Chris wasn’t ready for that yet.
“If you want to leave, ill make sure Rebecca gets home safe and its your card behind the bar so we’ll stay out.” I said, a small chuckle leaving my mouth.
“Absolutely not! Ill be ok. I’m going to drink the water and hope I feel better.” I nodded and sipped my martini. “Anyway, I need to get you drunk so you can tell me about this person who holds your heart.” I snorted.
“Not going to happen!” I answered, dryly.
“Oh, I think it will!” Chris said, smiling mischievously.
Rebeccas POV
I was starting to feel a bit wobbly after visiting the bathroom and headed back to the table for a sit down. As I reached the table, I heard the guys talking and even saw Michael smiling a little. It was then that I noticed Michael had removed his tie and undone buttons on his shirt. This was surprising as it wasn’t something he had done in a long time. He looked good, very good. I shook my head at those weird thoughts, and I noticed Chirs was sweating profusely at this point and headed over to the table, worried.
“Anyway, I need to get you drunk so you can tell me about this person who holds your heart.” I heard Chris say to Michael. I heard Michael answer that wouldn’t happen, and Chris was smiling very mischievously. Michael liked someone. That was a shock. He hated everyone. He only really put up with me because I had become a habit and he loved Chris dearly despite his cold exterior.
“You like someone?” I blurted out as I sat at the table.
“Uh-oh!” Christ chuckled and pointed at Michael. “Cats out the bag now!” I couldn’t help but giggle.
“Spill Michael! Maybe we can help.” I said, turning to him and putting my chin into my hands, waiting.
“Absolutely not, and if you both don’t drop it, I will absolutely tell on who your crushes are.” I sat up tall. I knew deep down that Michael knew how I felt about Chris, so I shut my lips tightly and pretended to lock them and throw away the key. What surprised me was that Chris was glaring at Michael, and not in a joking way.
