Author’s afterword:Pioneers going into space will create new societies just as those on the American frontier created communities that were based on, but not identical to, the places they had known before. People will move forward in pursuit of careers and loved ones. They will form relationships as they work, live their lives, and move on. Some will dramatically change their lives, including those who are fleeing something on Earth or in the very space communities they helped to build. Many of those may cross paths again after long intervals apart. The burgeoning economic development of East Asia has already led to space programs in China, Japan, and India. The early colonies in space will probably have a mix of races and cultures, but some will create opportunities to be free of the soc
