“All of you know the rules,” Fleming shouted. The chanting had stopped and the protests were subsiding. “We must have order here. It's the only way so many of us can live together here.” “What do you mean, ‘us’?” A woman named Pauline demanded. “You don’t live here. You go home at night.” Calls of agreement followed. “It's time for you all to return to your rooms,” Fleming ordered. “Now. Return the prod rings to the orderlies and go back to your rooms.” Angry shouts rose up. Nobody moved. “It's time to go to your rooms,” he thundered. “No!” Jimmy shouted suddenly from the back of the crowd, surprising himself. “It's time–time for your boot heels to be wanderin'!” Everybody in the crowd laughed except the orderlies. Jimmy couldn't quite remember why that was funny. He had just said
