34 Russell Foley pushed the police Toyota four-wheel-drive hard. The speedometer indicated the vehicle was traveling at more than one-hundred-and-fifteen kilometres per hour when the road junction suddenly appeared in front of him. “There!” Sam yelled, pointing to the turn-off. Startled, Foley slammed down hard on the brake pedal. The rear wheels locked and twin puffs of black tyre smoke puffed from beneath the vehicle. The rear end began to slide sideways, to the left, towards the loose, red dirt shoulder of the road, threatening to throw the vehicle into a dangerous skid from which it would be nearly impossible to recover at the speed it was traveling.
