chapter 6

1400 Words
Ella Standing at the front door of Lisa's apartment, I rummaged through the purse she had lended me for the spare key. Frustrated, I spewed numerous curses with every extra minute I spent searching. Artemis. That jerk. I had spent the whole bus ride with him in mind. Why did he have to be so cocky and tease me about last night? I wish I could have wiped that stupid smirk off his face. “ Asshole” I huffed as my fingers brushed something metal and sharp. Bingo I walked through the door , my eyes sweeping round the area. “Lisa” I called out and was replied with nothing but silence. She probably had work to do or maybe she was at her boyfriend's. The past weeks I've stayed here, I could tell those two couldn't spend a few days apart, I mean they f**k like bunnies. I could also tell she was trying to reduce the number of times he'd come over , probably for my sake. Knowing Lisa she probably felt bad and thought she was rubbing it in my face. I appreciate her for that, but can't help but feel saddened by how I had disrupted her life , I brought all my baggage here and dumped it on her. On the bright side, with this job I could rent my own apartment soon and finally get out of Lisa's hair. Plopping onto the couch, I sighed and wondered what I could do to repay her for her kindness. I mean she is my best friend but not all best friends could be there for you like how Lisa was for me. I glanced to my right at the moderately sized kitchen , maybe I could cook for us. My best friend would be back any time soon and would most likely be hungry, she has a big appetite. I did too, five years ago, but the hardship faced in prison could alter anyone's appetite. With that decided, I got up, went straight for the bedroom and changed into one of Lisa's old shirts. With my phone set on the counter, and ‘I gotta a feeling' by Black eyed peas playing in the background, I got to work. I decided to make pasta bolognese. Lisa and I used to eat it a lot while growing up. It was our favorite. As I chopped up the vegetables, I delved into a world of memories. Lisa and I have come a long way, from grade 3 to be exact. Ella and Lisa Lisa and Ella Everyone knew us. We wore matching pigtails and bows to school everyday. We were both friendly with each other in the beginning but our friendship didn't bloom until one fateful day. It all started when I was getting bullied constantly by a classmate, Anna, because I liked a boy who she ‘’claimed’ was hers. Lisa, being the girl that she is, hated injustice and one day got fed up and smacked Anna right in the face. We all got suspended but it was totally worth it. I still replay the look of shock on Anna's face from time to time, when I wanted to have a quick laugh. On cue, I giggled as I poured the pasta into the boiling water. Those days would forever be embedded in my head, the easier times. I spent the next hour preparing our meal and jamming to music. Just as I was setting out the plates on the marble counter, Lisa strolled into the apartment. “Is that pasta I smell?” She asked excitedly, her eyes as big as saucers as though she was a puppy getting her first bone. I laughed, “ You know it” She dashed into the bedroom to get changed, while I served the food. “Oh God, this tastes so good” Lisa moaned, we were now on the couch, our legs tangled up while eating. “You've said that like a million times” We both laughed, falling into a comfortable silence. Suddenly Lisa's demeanor changed, it became more serious “What?” I asked with a raised brow. I had an idea of what she was about to say. “How did the job interview go?” I inhaled sharply, contemplating on whether I should begin with the accidental one night stand with my ex husband's brother. “Surprisingly it went well” Lisa stared at me, confusion written all over her face. “ If it went well, why do you look so gloom?” “Well…There's a slight problem” I sighed. Here goes nothing “Artemis is my boss” I watched as her expression changed from that of confusion to shock then anger quickly, all in a matter of seconds. “Artemis?!” She exclaimed while shifting closer to me, dropping her food. “ Ella what the f**k is wrong with you? Correct me if I'm wrong but Artemis is Tom's brother right?” I stared at her , the best thing to do in situations like this when Lisa's angry is to let her rant. “You should have walked out immediately, why didn't you?” “I… She cut me off “ How do you know that Tom didn't put him up for this?” “ Lis… calm down please” I said with pleading eyes while taking her hands in mine. “First of all, Artemis hates Tom, if anything, the only reason he would hire me is to get back at his step brother. Secondly, if I'm going to start getting my life back together, Artemis is the best person to help me. His firm is one of the most successful businesses in the world. Lisa, he's a powerful man who has all the resources to build my new career.” Her face softened with understanding “ I still feel you should explore your options, do not put all your eggs in a basket, especially this one, I do not trust him.” I got where she was coming from, she was just being a good friend, but still I believed that Artemis was my best option. The only issue with my new job was the way my body reacted whenever he was close, like I couldn't control it. It would be awkward for me for a bit, especially since he relieved me of a five year s****l frustration just the night before. I was sure Artemis would find that rather amusing. Speaking of last night, I hadn't had enough time to reminisce about it. Just the thought of it caused a tingling sensation to settle in between my legs. Without warning, provocative thoughts began flooding my mind, most made up of how his lips had felt on mine. My n*****s hardened, the friction between it and the fabric of the shirt I had on caused me to whimper. “Ella” Oh I had forgotten she was still in the room with me. Her eyes settled on my chest, my n****e imprints very visible. My face turned red with embarrassment. “ You slept with him, didn't you?” “ He was the person you were with last night” she said knowingly. “ Don't be mad at me” I pleaded “ I'm not, he is hot, so I can't blame you” Relieved, I said, “ it was a mistake but one I most definitely do not regret” I began narrating to Lisa how Artemis had made me feel that night. How I didn't think I had ever felt so satisfied after s*x like I had with Artemis, and how I had ran out this morning when I realized who he was. In the midst of all that, my phone rang with a notification. An email I tapped on it and read it out loud for Lis to hear. “Dear Miss Ella Turner …” It was from the firm “… as the new business partner,” . Shocked, I turned to face Lisa. “Business partner..? I thought he said I would be a personal assistant” She chuckled, “ I'm sure Artemis threatened whoever wrote the mail to include that” It did sound like something he would do. Glancing back at my phone, I continued reading. “..you are to resume tomorrow at 9AM” Tomorrow? What the f**k.
