I was still standing by the door when it opened.
Rowan walked in and I knew immediately, one look at his face and I knew, the meeting had not gone the way anyone wanted it to and whatever had happened in that room was sitting on him heavily. He looked distraught in a way he rarely let show and I felt the argument I had been rehearsing in my head dissolve completely.
Maybe I had pushed too hard about Alec. Maybe I had been wrong. Who was I to be making those kinds of judgements anyway? I had come to this school as an assassin with a mission that had nothing to do with justice and everything to do with someone else's grief and somewhere along the way I had started playing detective with people's lives and maybe that wasn't my place.
